Rukh O'Rorke, a sore throat is NOT a symptom of COVID 19. So maybe that's a good thing.

Well, I'm now job hunting. Furlough due to the collapse of the commercial air industry. I'm not laid off yet but I doubt my company can recover. So, time to dust off my job search skill.

I worry I'll be in the same boat soon (different industry, but mass unemployment wreaks havoc on my industry). I'm tempted to try for one of the Amazon or grocery store jobs part time now, but not sure I can juggle 2 jobs with everything else right now. Good luck on the job hunt.

Well, I'm now job hunting. Furlough due to the collapse of the commercial air industry. I'm not laid off yet but I doubt my company can recover. So, time to dust off my job search skill. My DD was what I think she calls "Above Wing". She had a permanent Part time position at MSN, but switched to MKE and took an on-call position. She found out after she accepted the MKE position that her Manager was going to give her a PT Supervisor Position, which would have put her in a much better position now.
DD's airline asked employees to volunteer to be furloughed. 17,000 people Volunteered for from 60-90 days, and they are still looking for more. She got an e-mail from Corporate that the CEO is asking all ground employees, including merit employees, to reduce their schedule to three and four day work weeks from April through June. I asked DD how many employees they have and she said 80,000. She said those who work in the Operations Control Center (dispatch headquarters) or Reservations are not effected by hour cuts or leave.
My DD is finishing up school. She was going to do summer school (I think one course) and then next fall and she had planned to be done. I told her yesterday that she might want to go to school in Spring too and graduate in spring so that she is not graduating into the worst job market in history. Also if she waits that long, hopefully the airline industry will recover.
DD said if they don't have jobs when her 90 days is up, they will terminate her, but she was told that they are going to try to get 6 month and possibly one year furloughs approved, so that might help save her job. In return for "Volunteering" they get two confirmed airline tickets - I am not sure if she said she could use the internationally or not. If you don't at least get part time hours, then I guess you try to collect unemployment. I am thinking all these "voluntary furloughs" will not be able to collect unemployment. DD has a second job working for her Dad. They say little is going on there too, so He probably doesn't need her but we will keep her on the payroll. I think b/c she has always had the second income - she could not collect UC unless she lost both jobs.
She is going to try to get a grocery store job stocking shelves I guess. She only has a month and a half left on her lease, so her not working is not going to kill us. DH will continue to get paid, his commissions will probably fall drastically, but we should be fine. I think my job is safe too. I hope so because I carry the health insurance.
stillmovingforward How long did you work for the airline? What kind of job are you going to look for? Is your household going to be OK? I am so sorry you have this added stress in addition to trying to avoid getting sick.

Think the almost passed Corona emergency bill that gives loans or grants to airlines has a provision for the loans section on employee pay requires no layoffs

Think the almost passed Corona emergency bill that gives loans or grants to airlines has a provision for the loans section on employee pay requires no layoffs She had to put in her request by yesterday. If she did not request a furlough she was guaranteed to be let go permanently, so she took the 90 day furlough. If they can't lay of - can they reduce hours? There is no one flying and they do still have to cover their overhead.

I have no idea what to do with my extended job interview with the decision to be rendered in November.
There is another person applying for the job. We will have a first round interview in June. I am definitely applying on two lines alone (D and WF) and will be having a preliminary decision on 2 lines in june (R and I). The other candidate will hold the C line on their own.
I can't order any supplies to help with my quest, either.
I have no idea what I should be doing.

I've been in aerospace for about 10 years. I work at a maintenance facility. Being furloughed, I can get unemployment and am not required to seek work. But it's scary because I carry our medical, which I really need, and I'm our primary breadwinner by a long shot! Plus, I love what I do and it looks like our industry is going to be devastated.

I didn't get the next level position - not surprised. The woman I know with more experience who interviewed after me didn't get it either, so I'm really not feeling too bummed about this one. I was supposed to have my in-person interview for the lateral position today, but they changed it to a telephone interview. It went really well I think. They still want to have an in-person with the whole panel eventually, but since we'll all be wfh for the foreseeable future, it might be a while before that happens.Hangouts Meet interview with the panel is scheduled for this upcoming Friday. I'm more worried about technical issues with my wifi (seems to be bogging down this past week, maybe with everyone working from home?) than I am about the interview itself.

DH filled out the NYS DOH application for emergency healthcare workers.
I'm not sure how much of a need there is for pharmacists, but he's willing to go.

Thank you Mr. Swamp!!
We got emergency alerts on phones for licensed healthcare workers to assist the state.
It's hard to believe that the entire world is on fire right now and there isn't enough help to go around. That governments are blasting all hands on deck for help on random phones....
I have no license or training, so they must be reaching out to everyone.

I had my Google hangouts interview on Friday. No technical issues, so that was a relief. I thought it went really well, but I got the sneaking feeling that they've already chosen a (probable internal) candidate. I may be wrong, hopefully I am, but I got a strong vibe that I was wasting my time. Grrrrr!!! I should find out in about a week.

I've tried to get a sore throat twice in the last couple of weeks. So far gargling with peroxide has stopped it. Hope I don't get it as I do not want to go near a doctors office for awhile.

I thought it went really well, but I got the sneaking feeling that they've already chosen a (probable internal) candidate. I may be wrong, hopefully I am, but I got a strong vibe that I was wasting my time. Grrrrr!!! I should find out in about a week. I hadn't heard back on this and figured I didn't get the job. I emailed the main guy on Monday, he answered back right away, and yesterday he offered me the job.
The downside: because the state has lost a ton of revenue and next year's budget is going to be UGLY, the pay range was lowered to less than I make now. I managed to negotiate a bit, but the highest they could go was $18/month less than my current.
The upside: way more flexibility with wfh/flex time. More opportunity for advancement, training, and learning new skills. And the biggest benefit - no more heinous, micromanaging, condescending controller.
So I took the job and put in my notice. It's a bit of a letdown with the pay - not only no raise but actually making a tiny bit less, not that the pidly $18/month less affects my lifestyle, but it's the principle of the thing. But I think the long term benefits are worth it, and the mental health benefit is definitely worth it. So overall, I'm feeling really excited!

It's 3 blocks from where I work now, so I don't get a break on the commute unfortunately. That's one of the drawbacks about working for the state - almost all the offices are downtown within an 8 block radius of each other.
I start May 11. I feel bad I was only able to give 13 days' notice instead of the full 2 weeks, but meh.

Woohoo! Yay for flutterby!
I'm in local gov't and I'm expecting furloughs to becoming down the pike. Probably for the next few years. Our budget was tight due to payments to the pension fund and between the market and COVID, it's only going to get worse. We did hire 2 tech guys, they started last week.
