Ok.
My younger brother just texted that he's job hunting. His company is closing down a couple of departments and somehow that translates into him being out. He's IT, way better than me at it.

I *think* we have a hiring decision made on my open position. In a decade of being in hiring manager roles, this was honestly the most difficult decision I have ever been a part of. We have 5 seriously good candidates. Each would be great at the job and fit in with our department. We ended up back at our strategic plan and looking at how each of the candidates would most likely move us forward (because there were differences). On some level, we are choosing the "riskier" candidate, but since this is a fundraising (ie sales) position, the truth is, higher risk is part of the job. And, to go back to earlier comments about interviewing more people.... This is the candidate who, if I hadn't been doing phone screens for almost 20 people would not have made it to the phone screen. But she impressed in the phone screen and then became one of our top 3 candidates, and we felt that spoke a lot about how good she would be at the job.
Giving everyone a night to sleep on the decision. I plan to make the offer tomorrow morning.

Looking for some thoughts if anyone has some!
So while according to my last boss my promotion is not guaranteed (though he's now fully moved into the I deserve it category even though he only came up with it because I balked at a lateral move) but my new boss talks as if it's going to happen they're just checking boxes or whatever before I get it. So much so that new boss pushed for and got approval to go to a college fair tomorrow for a summer intern that would report directly to me. So my old boss, my new boss, the guy that's above my old boss and the head of HR at my division have all given the promotion a thumbs up but I guess there's still channels because our dept is officially part of corporate not of the division I work at (I know so awkward).
So now the pressing question is what to do when I'm assuming the promotion salary increase comes in. The only in-house promotion I had my boss went to bat for a higher percent that I was thinking so I just accepted it. My next promotion was during a job change. Furthermore my promotion is to a not as well used field. I'm moving from Senior to Lead and it seems lead isn't used as much out of tech fields because the salary estimates are all over the place when I put it in.
Ignoring the weird ass ones (that I'm assuming doesn't know what to do with the lead because the bottom of the range is more than 25% of my current wage and what I was making back as a regular old analyst) most of the rest have a pretty big step up. Some of the ones are pretty close to what Glassdoor says is the average wage for managers at my company. Or at least seem close. I need to do research but it seems the average managers are around 50% more than what I'm currently making. The min for the new position is about 10% more than I'm currently making but the average seems closer to around 25%.
Obviously whatever they offer I'm going to counter with a higher amount because f their 5 years with an overall cumulative raise of those years equally less than 10%. But there's also really no me saying no. If they don't budget it would mostly mean me continuing to bug out.
But is it insane to expect a 25% jump if the median says that? Thoughts? Pick a couple thousand over what they offer? Add a certain percent to what they offer? (ie like if they offer 10% i should counter with 15%?) I don't want to be out of reach, but I don't really want to leave money on the table either. Though I'm taking the promotion either way since the name change will help so much on leaving.

justme - Is there anyway to find out the salary grade/range your company uses for the position you are moving into? I would expect you to move into the new position at roughly the same spot in that pay-grade as you are in your current one, unless you are at the very top of your current pay grade (they don't want to promote you to then not have room in the grade for annual raises), then I would expect to move somewhere around the 66% to 75% paygrade level. So mostly, I would say, I would expect a raise that is equivalent with the differences between the two paygrades at your company. But I don't know how easy that information is for you to get. I work for the state, and all of our salary information is pretty public and easy to find.

I have a really last-minute interview with my manager and her manager this afternoon. A position opened up in my department that's a couple of steps up from what I'm doing. And a couple bucks more too. My manager asked me to apply for it because it's definitely something I can do. And she's worried about me getting bored and leaving. I didn't mention that my supervisor scared the crap out of when I fell asleep yesterday! Ms. Rigby, get that magic wand a-waving please!

I've had access to some people's salaries in the company via my job but those aren't comparable (warehouse and sales people vs office job). On top of that there are no Leads that I know of in the company so looking on the websites that report salary by company and job type. A 10% bump from my current salary is what it would take to get to the bare minimum of what info I can find on lead positions in the area. But my current salary is just below the median for my current position in the area. Though my boss has consistently said I'm the highest paid analyst on the team (though that was before our new hires). Frankly a 10% raise wouldn't even put me in the top range in my area for my current position. It'd only put me a few thousand over the higher website's median.

So I never heard back from my request for alternate dates on the 2nd interview. That was two weeks ago so moving on.
Unfortunately buzz afoot about major changes/shifts in current department operations. Super nervous....this could impact my work unit....aka....eliminate my work unit altogether.
Yikes 8^|

You know if we're all going to get lectures about doing our fair share and being team players MAYBE somebody should be looking at the fact that it's taken half the day for one person to do one task (which I know doesn't take 4 hours because I usually get stuck doing it) and notice how many other tasks everyone else has gotten done in the same time frame.

Made the offer. The candidate is excited but wanted to be able to call me back later today. I sent over the official offer letter so that she would have that information. I expect she'll take the offer, but I could be wrong.

That is such a giant load off my mind.

Rukh O'Rorke I'm sorry you haven't heard back. You may yet but I agree, after two weeks it's probably better to turn the page in your head. I'd probably reach out to them though, if you haven't already. Any chance the latest thing you applied to PLUS Rukh Inc could work? If you really think you may be downsized, have you reached out to the place where you used to teach? It might be worth a try.
If you want to develop Rukh Inc, you need several smaller jobs while you do, rather than one big job, I think.
Also, Rukh, sorry, you're not going to like this ... but since your 2 adult kids are still living at home and both done with school (I think), and you need options going forward, could you ask both to pay a small/reasonable amount of rent? Even $250 from each would help and open up more options for you going forward.

I’m trying to figure out a plan. Just in case! Trying to get back some teaching is a good idea. I am collecting some nominal rents. Nominal. And I do get a lot of services too. Out of state this week for work and pet sitting and snow removal is included. Left Sunday and returning tomorrow. My longest work trip ever. At least I got in the ocean for a bit a couple of days... Supposedly the org shakeup should be announced in a couple weeks-if it is happening! This is just speculation! But how can I shore myself up? In a few weeks-month? I have my large RI project on the table right now so that is something. I could wring maybe 3 months of living out of that. Maybe. Need to consider the taxes. When I get home will start the ball rolling for a cash out refi. will examine and try to lower all bills. I’m applying to jobs. Anything else I should consider? Things that aren’t too ‘out there’ as maybe nothing happens? With RI and accessing current company 401k under the 55 rule, I can go 7-9 months. Then I’d just sell the house. I think it’s a good enough plan. No reason for panic.

That sounds like a good plan Rukh. The only other thing I can think of is, do you have extra bedrooms? I have a friend who had an extra bedroom (sometimes two). She rented them (informally) to her kids' young adult friends. She did that for 2-3 years until all the young adults "launched" and/or moved out of the area. It was a big help at the time.

I’ve thought of that. We have 2 spare br.
Just seems ..... too invasive !
At least for a phantom threat. If it comes to pass will reconsider.

They released a study and they showed that people that did not accept their initial offer, but later sold their houses only made .77% more than Zillow initially offered them. So if Zillow offers is working in your market, you could try to sell/buy a different property rather than refi'ing. I checked, they are not doing it in the Milwaukee area yet. They said if they offer to buy your house - it takes only about 60 days from offer to close.

The offer I made was accepted. Working on the backend paperwork so that everything is set for the candidate to start on Monday, March 2. Which also happens to be my next workday after today. Definitely looking forward to this vacation.
