Carl- on the wife front and I'm sorry if this seems too personal. But could part of her freaking out also be because you were about to try IVF and how a job and moving and all of that may derail that? I am sure you and your wife will come through this together. And good luck with the interviews. I think it is everything, so much happening at once. So yes having an IVF appointment for this Friday did not help the cause... But I told her not to cancel it. We've waiting 8 years for the perfect time to have a kid and guess what? It hasn't come yet so moving forward with it. So yes juggling a lot: job search, IVF treatment, possible relocation or not, new job... God we are freaking insane! I'm glad that you are getting lots of phone interviews. And you've got a great attitude about kids. There is no perfect time, and if you relocate you may find that insurance won't cover IVF. MA is one of the few states that requires insurance to cover part or all of IVF. So even if it's not the best time with your job, if you relocate to a state that doesn't require that it's covered you may regret not taking the leap now. it will work out. You will land on your feet.

Sorry, I don't know much about the Baltimore area. We're basically due north of DC in the sweet spot between urban and country. I'd definitely recommend renting until your wife figures out where she's commuting to...I think I95 is basically always heavy traffic between Baltimore and DC, so commuting from northwest Baltimore could be frustrating depending on where she's working.
Dunno if it's Wegmans you're escaping from, but they have stores in Columbia and Germantown, MD...I think Columbia is a reasonable COL; Germantown would be townhouse for sure but maybe a little more accessible for options for your wife--quite a bit of govt and biotech along the I270 corridor.

Not knowing on the areas you are looking at, I am wishing you the best in your search. You and everyone else know that you are the best candidate for your position. You will find an adequate position in your general area within a few weeks. Keep it up. Everyone is cheering for you.

Thank you everyone... So far 2 phone interviews on Wednesday that I hope turn into actual in person interviews soon afterwards.
Still looking and searching if there is any other openings anywhere else.

I would say no to Franklin. It pretty much means a townhouse but I would focus on Montgomery County. You can go to DC, Baltimore or northern Virginia from there.
Baltimore into DC is not fun, that's why I do the opposite, my commute is much nicer. Trust me you do not want to be out in Frederick and commuting in. I leave for work at 6am and according to the traffic reports I hear, 270 is already jacked up at 6 bleeping am. No thank you!
My office just had a guy transfer from Boston. His commute is now 45 minutes one way instead of two hours. I will cross my fingers you land one of the local jobs.

Talked to the headhunter today. He said that the lady that interviewed me is impressed and does have interviews set up already this week, but I am definitely in the running. Fingers crossed!

My current commute is 20 minutes and it's the farthest I've ever worked from home. The job I want would be a 10 minute commute and that's pretty ideal. One that I considered was a 5 minute commute, but there weren't enough other positives to make me take the position.

When I lived in MD, my commute was 12-15 minutes and it was great! When we moved to N Fl, my commute was 30 minutes then about 20-22 minutes (office moved). Now in S Fl, my commute is 30-35 minutes, which is about my max that I like now that we have DD. DH and I are talking about moving back north, but haven't fully decided on where to live. DH has no desire to move to his home area (metro MD/DC area in MD) and my home area (Frederick area in MD) is way too congestive to entertain to move back too. We have friends that live in western MD and commute to Frederick and metro MD area, but I'm not sure I want to do that either. For right now, we are staying put, but we still talk about it periodically. Granted, DH is currently unemployed (was let go last month) and we have been TTC another child so it could be an interesting year too. I would just like everything to work itself out relatively soon.

Our admin assistant commutes in from Frederick via I270. I think she said she typically leaves for work at 3:30 a.m. Once she still got caught in traffic and didn't get in till 5:30 a.m. She moved out of Montgomery County because she said she couldn't afford it there anymore; a lot of it is pretty pricey. We've been to the mall in Frederick and I was struck by how eighties the people there seemed--giant hair, heavy makeup, big earrings and kinda attitude Gaithersburg and Montgomery Village reportedly have some decent and affordable areas. Honestly I think this is all academic till Mrs. Carl has an idea where she'd be working. Not terrifically familiar with public health (I think that's her field, yesno?) but Baltimore doesn't have much that I'm aware of except maybe Johns Hopkins. I do think a townhouse is likely going to be their best compromise; the housing stock here isn't as cruddy or expensive as the Bay Area but there are an awful lot of 1940s and 1970s houses going for seven figures based on location. A 250-300K budget with Pottery Barn tastes says either "townhouse" or "hellacious commute" to me. Just for grins: www.roadsnacks.net/these-are-the-10-most-ghetto-cities-in-maryland/(Good luck to the Carls!)

I have family there. But when we took into account the cost of living, taxes and commute times, it was just too high a price to pay. I have 3 interviews this week, a couple of other irons in the fire, and a few new job listings to apply for. Something will shake loose soon.

I feel like that just can't be healthy for you long term. Now I'm trying to remember the people at the mall in Frederick. I'm drawing a blank. Now at Bethesda's mall sometimes the boys have more make up on than me. I've had friends live in Gaithersburg and Germantown. They were in townhouses but there are worse things in life. Hopkins is in Baltimore and so is CMS. I was just trying to think of what gives the most options since the days of having one job until retirement seem to be over. Kaiser has a huge office somewhere in MD. I can't remember where now but I swear you can see it from 270. Or I think it was 270.

I do have family (brother and his family) in KC while my DH has his family (siblings and parents) are in MD. Also my dad is in MD but he's looking to retire this year and move back to FL. Also, my dad doesn't know our plans. My mom lives close to us, but she's ready to move TODAY if it was possible (can't yet due to her HOA rules about selling too soon -she could start selling in Oct). She's contemplated KS but rather move back to MD.

Thanks for all the feedback guys... So staying would be in our best interest but it all depends when I get a job offer and from whom?
Everything is up in the air and it is stressful! Trying not to let it show though.

I stayed in Frederick, Maryland for a wedding back in October. Aside from Flying Dog (and the very limited area I saw), Frederick looked like hell on earth to me. Way too far from a city to be worth living there, and the traffic getting there (Friday late afternoon/early evening in the rain) was absolutely dreadful. It took us four hours to get to the reception from Philly. Google said 2.5 hours. HA!
Some people's commutes are absolutely ridiculous! I have 35 minutes of train time and hubs has a 15 minute drive. Living outside Philly rules! How would the job prospects be around here, Carl? Philly has a lot in the medical field (many great hospital systems) and Temple, Drexel, and UPENN all have public health departments. There are also a ton of grocery chains. I'm partial to Giant. :-) You would still be within 2-3 hours from family (your family is in North Jersey, right?)

Didn't get the job that I mentioned previously.
I guess I was one of the top two candidates and in the end, they went with someone local to the office (it was unclear on whether they already worked for the organization or not, that might be the case). I am 1.25 hours away and hoped to do a flexible schedule. I guess that didn't go in my favor. Oh well, I couldn't drive to Pittsburgh five days/week with two young kids at home.

I made it into work today despite the weather. Where is my trophy? DH's job has some nice perks. They offer free childcare on Snow days to encourage employees to come in. Problem is they don't open till 7:30 am and we don't know DH's permenant hours yet. If he's at 4:30 am I am not sure we can take advantage of it. They also offer reimbursement for summer day camps. We are not sure what that means but we will absolutely be looking into it.

Seems to be going all right. He said his new supervisor isn't a psycho so that's a definite plus. He spent all day in orientation yesterday so not much to report. He's not happy about having to go back to 4:30 am at least for the time being but otherwise seems to be all right with it. We'll see how today goes since it's his first day actually working.

taz157 : Ok, keeping my fingers crossed for you guys. Any leads right now? steph08 : Sorry to hear you did not get the job! Day #4 being at home and I am about to pull my hair/eyes out. Went to the gym yesterday and today just to get the hell out of the house. Today was a bit easier because my wife had to go into work and I did not have to look at her and see that she is freaking out or was crying. I applied to a couple more jobs today and only still have the 2 phone interviews tomorrow. The good side is they got back to me so fast so shows that they are serious and looking to fill the position(s) ASAP. I am just praying and hoping it moves to the next level and I get a job ASAP. Personally deep down I hope the local company make me a good offer first this way we don't have to relocate. Relocation is never fun unless we get to be closer to family members, that would make it somewhat tolerable. Haven't heard back from work whether I am fired or not. 1 day at a time!

We don't know yet. They had two shifts open when he interviewed. One from 4:30 am -1:00 pm and one from 7:30-4:00. They asked him which one he would prefer and he said the latter. He's not assured it, I am assuming if there is someone who wants off the early shift or a night shift would get that first, which is understandable.
So we don't know what his set hours will be. He's on 4:30 for now b/c he needs to learn pre-op.
There are some advantages to him working 4:30-1:00, he can take over doctor duty for the kids again. I also pointed out that he can decide to pick up Gwen on Mondays, they release at 1:55 and spend some daddy/daughter time just the two of them. Or he can have the house to himself for 3 whole hours.
