The link worked for me; maybe you fixed it. I LOVE the Bangor Police Department FB page- a great mix of humor, caveats and practical advice.

LOL! I'd ask if Stephen King was writing for them but he'd have spelled Rice Krispies right.

mollyanna58@athena53: I did go back and fix it -- it's too humorous not to share.

True stuff in the article.
Our local stations pre-empted this morning's national shows (Good Morning America, Today Show, etc.) and spent all that time telling us it was lightly snowing out. Schools were cancelled for yesterday for todsy so no need to tell us about that.
Guess what Memphis-it does snow here once in a while during winter. No need to tell us for hours at a time on the TV, especially when it isn't a life-as-we-know-it ending snow fall.

As if we never see such a thing down here. I even get sick of the hurricane coverage.

O.M.G. They never let up on the coverage until the sun finally comes out. They pre-empt everything. Sure, they've messed up on a few forecasts, and sure, the Blizzard of 78 happened 38 years ago, but, jeez, I think we've got the routine down by now (especially after last winter). I blame the advent of AWD/4WD. Every whacko with the money to buy a vehicle with AWD/4WD thinks they can drive in ANY conditions and needs to be reminded otherwise during every big storm.

Our local weather forecasters are having a ball pointing out that the snow will miss us, and are predicting sunny days thru Sunday. Oh, and that our airport's plane deicing crews are the best, but some other airport's crews are "pretty good, too".
That and pictures of the lines in convenience stores for picking up bread. Since the Blizzard of 77 everyone locally knows to follow then mayor Jimmy Griffin's advice to pick-up a couple sixpacks and STAY HOME.

We live in Wisconsin out in BF nowhere - Generator, check; vehicles kept full of gas, check; a whole store-room full of food, check; multiple 4wd vehicles, check; no panic here when it snows. DH wants a 'new' truck with a plow because his is junk, but eh, he has plenty of pals with plows. We are well prepared for a snowstorm, SHTF or the zombie apocalypse!!

Where was the funny? This is just standard operating procedure for anyone who has spent even one winter in the Mid-Atlantic region. We get snow. Sometimes a lot. Make sure to always have a stocked liquor cabinet. And live in the walking distance to a bar.

I remember the Blizzard of 78 very well. I worked afternoon/evenings in and around Bradley International Airport (Hartford, CT/Springfield, MA) at that time. My manager called me around noon the day of the storm and told me not to report for work. I told him there were only snow flurries outside. "How many times have we loaded and launched aircraft in snow storms-hundreds of times" I said. He said, "Trust me-we are shutting down now for the day." He was right. We didn't report back to work for three days. I don't remember a lot of pre-storm TV coverage at that time. Maybe that's why we have so much today.

I avoid the grocery store when they call for snow. Though it has sucked when they call for Monday/Tuesday snow and my normal shopping day is Sunday. Oh well. I have three bar/restaurants, a pizza place, and a WaWa nearby. I love big snowstorms! Day drinking with the neighbor is awesome!

OK, I have to ask - what's with the advice to fill the bathtub with water? I just can't puzzle that one out.

OK, I have to ask - what's with the advice to fill the bathtub with water? I just can't puzzle that one out. It is for people with a well. If your power goes out, so does the power that pumps your water. So filling up your tub gives you a resoivoir of water to drink, wash, flush with.

If you have a well with an electric pump and the electric goes out, you can still flush the toilet. And wash cereal bowls. Not sure how many wells there are in the Mid-Atlantic. Maybe they need to worry about contaminated water if the electric goes out at the water treatment plants.

It was the only time the university where I went closed. The snow at the end of the driveways was higher than I could throw it and the damn snow plows kept blocking the driveway up again. I was after this storm that my dad finally bought a snow blower. He lost his child labor.

If your power goes out, so does the power that pumps your water. So filling up your tub gives you a resoivoir of water to drink, wash, flush with. Got it, thanks! If power goes out, we're usually more concerned with pipes freezing, so the standard advice is to leave faucets on a trickle. We have town water, so didn't think about the electric pump issue. There are farm properties around here on wells; I'd guess that they'd make sure to have generators for that very reason. Most people seem to at least have a gasoline genny, if not the big whole house NG ones common in the burbs.

With the hurricane advice you still get fill up the tubs, because aside from the other points, the waste water treatment plants can get overwhelmed/flooded/whatever. I haven't had a tub in ages that held water, it was always a slow leaker. The new place's tub might work but I don't plan on hanging out here during a storm, it's a low lying area.
