Well, fiddle! I see i forgot to make updates again. I've had a lot going on and I just completely forgot to do it. I did put money in the appropriate accounts, though, so I am on track. I may decide to add more to the travel fund, though. All it is really earmarked for is a trip out to see my daughter in the fall. She has asked me to ome for a 2-week visit this time. Since I work on line as long as I have my computer, foot pedal and ear phones I can work from anywhere. A longer visit won't affect the plane ticket costs, of course, but I'd like to take us all out for supper a couple times and will also need a little extra pocket jingle so I can shamelessly spoil my middle 2 grandchildren.
Things are still moving along albeit slowly. Transferring some accounts has more convoluted than I expected it to be so it will still be awhile before I begin seeing any money. Next month I should begin drawing my half of the pension and that will be a great relief. The scoping class has been delayed just a bit but should be starting up soon. The quilting is coming along. I live near a town that has big quilt show each April and GD#1, who is my fabric partner in crime, and I went as always. That was a fun day. I didn't buy much but my mojo got kick started again and I've been enjoying working on a few new projects. Overall life is looking good!

So, gracendignity, post your update and tag line now so you don't forget! Glad things are moving along. After my divorce, it took FOREVER to transfer funds in one account. The paperwork was endless, and one company that held XH's IRA required a "medallion signature guarantee" rather than just a simple notarization. We went round and round on that. It took months. There were other issues that needed to be worked out with that company. It seemed endless. You'll get there.

snapdragon Congratulations on having your savings up into the 5's, and your debt race down into the 3's. You are poised to be a "double winner" this year. So what do you think has helped you continue to maintain a balance between paying down and saving up? My thought is that you don't have to do all or nothing. Right now I am fighting with myself about pulling the money out of the EF and paying off my 2nd mtg and just keeping the course. I have the feeling that I would be shooting myself in the foot if I did that and I would need the money for SOMETHING unexpected so it is better if I just keep paying extra on the mtg. and not touching the savings because I still really want a vacation and if I pulled from the travel acct early - maybe I wouldn't get enough money back in there for a great vacation or experience. I am just a bundle of contradictions.

My race car is starting to move....I have about $700 (need to figure it out exactly as I have paid bills for the month ) to start my race moving forward again. Sorry about missing the update....spent over 30 hours this weekend setting up, decorating, serving dinner, washing dishes, then tearing down and cleaning up from prom. I am exhausted and teaching all day today!! Oh well, it looked beautiful and kids had a great time. I will try and get my update in the next few days...after I rest. Great job to all the racers! Savings is soaring here. Teachermom

I am just a bundle of contradictions. I understand the feeling. There is the desire to get to the finish line, but also the understanding that you will get there in due time and will be happier in the long run with more balance, and a great, well-earned and deserved vacation ahead. Good job SnapD! Like you, I am also feeling kind of antsy right now. DH's motorcycle is sold and the check was deposited Saturday, but I need to wait a few more days to be sure all is really well before I start moving that money into my goal accounts. ETA: I often look to that same principle "It doesn't have to be all or nothing." Thanks for that reminder.

Not a numbers update, but I thought you might like to know that our baby girl came home on Monday!!!! 89 days in the NICU. We are sooooo blessed! She is doing great, and other than some issues with bottle feeding that she will grow out of, she is doing really well. Now comes the adjustment to having a newborn in the house again, with a toddler already in residence!
I figured out my maternity leave, now that DD is home. I will stay out for 10 weeks, and bump my pay back up to 60% (from 50%). That will be approximately $300 more a month in take home, which will be very helpful in paying the bills. We're doing alright, but I am still hoping to hit the $5,000 in savings mark by the end of the year. Time will tell, of course, but -lesson learned - I will never draw down our ER Fund this low, ever again!

Previous updates for 2016 - 3/29 deposited bonus of $2671 for a total of $38,511
- 4/4 federal tax refund $510, jumped into a new tax bracket (yay, boo) so refund was less than expected but I really shouldn't complain $39,021
- 4/8 $550 from paycheck $39,571 I think this is a new record for my savings account, I know for sure $40,000 will be
- 4/18 State tax refund of $493 for a total of $40,064 (new personal record)
- 4/22 paycheck transfer of $100 for a total of $40,164
Current update - 5/3 withdrawal of -166.11 for a total of $40,000 (cc payment was due). This is another hole I need to plug, we charge a lot of our big bills (daycare, etc) on our card and then most of our misc spending as well and we pay it off every month. It's pretty consistently a $2500-3000 balance each month though which is crazy. Can you say lifestyle creep?! Will try to get time alone without the kids to go over a better plan with DH this weekend.
- 5/6 paycheck transfer of $675 for a total of $40,675 (new personal record)
Also need to discuss our plan for the current house (minor fix-ups) and really get serious about the timeline for moving since the down payment fund is nearing completion.
Off to submit our latest daycare reimbursements which will also be added to savings...

I'm so happy to have that motorcycle sold, and have that money working toward our goals: I converted our previous "travel" account to my "retirement gap" account, and set the goal for $9600 (24 weeks of possible gap time X $400). The weekly challenge is going well, and all the other goals are now at least 50%. Next I'll borrow strategy from scrgrl47 , setting up automatic deposits to all of the accounts, with all "extra" $$ going to the retirement gap account.

Grrr... Prior to ending up in the hospital back in January, I had been working on downsizing the number of credit cards we had, and simplifying things. I hadn't used my longest standing credit card in years, but knew that was stupid, and wanted to get it back into the rotation. Fast forward to Monday of this week, when we get a final notice from the company saying it will be permenently closed next month and there's nothing I can do. I called, they said nope, still closing it. I explained the situation, they said, so sorry, but you can apply for a new one. Soooooo NOT the point.
So, cautionary tale here for all! Use your important credit cards! I just lost close to 10 years of perfect credit history by voluntarily closing one card and the $%@!! bank closing another. Part of me is worried about the impact on my credit report; the other part of me knows we're not buying anything big any time soon. And, the cards will still show on my credit report for several years yet. It just stings a little that I got slapped for not fixing a problem fast enough, that I was already in the process of addressing!
Baby girl update: She's gained 2 oz and is up to 7 lbs now. We are so much more in love, and incredibly sleep deprived. :-P

Seriousthistime, $2,710, 5/7/2016 (Goal $8,148)I'm pleased with my decluttering effort. My spare room has the donations stacked up for the charity garage sale in a few weeks. I need to continue with that. I hired someone to help me with weeding, dividing, and transplanting. The first day she worked a few hours and it was SUCH a fantastic lift to come home to a nice, orderly front garden!

Saturday I was at a housewarming party for my brother and my Dad and Stepmother gave me a card as I was leaving to "open tomorrow". I thanked them an apologized to my step-mom for not getting her a card...because I really suck at that. I almost forgot about it yesterday, but opened it in the afternoon. There was a check for $2000 in there. I about fell over. It's common that they give me $100 or so for things like birthdays and Christmas, but outside of what they put toward my wedding never a cash gift like this in my 47 years. I called and asked if they added too many zeros by accident! Turns out, my sister was having some money issues, then my brother bought the house and they must have helped him and they just wanted to even things out. I would have never cared one way or another if things were even (or even known for that matter), but I guess it made them happy. Now I don't know what to do with it! Put towards my goals or consider it a windfall and finally get some of the things I've been wanting but will never spend on myself. Nothing crazy. $200 phone and $150 gas grill are a couple front runners that I've been wishing for.

minnesotapaintlady That is awesome to receive the $2K gift and so totally unexpectedly. If you choose to spend on the new phone, and don't trade in your old phone, perhaps you can then save money by not carrying the "phone insurance" since you'd have your old one for backup. You are doing so well in general & it seems you have your bases well covered, but you have mentioned that you can't seem to get ahead in the car fund. Maybe put some of the $2K there?

After getting a couple new tires I'm down to $52 in my auto maintenance fund and I had an "oil issue" last week that may or may not end up being very costly. Hard to say. I never carried insurance on phones. Just bought cheap used or new older models off ebay.

I also don't do phone insurance on my phone. I always have someone willing to give me their old phone...which works for me . ( I've even been given an "old phone" at the phone store when mine wouldn't work.) We pay the excess (AKA "insurance") on DH's phone. With personalities factored in, that is what makes more sense. Sorry about the car maintenance issues

(ETA: I have extra pay coming on this check too.....so I get to have a good boost to savings....makes it even harder to wait!!) Great job everyone! Teachermom

teachermom once a month paycheck sounds challenging. You have faced a lot of challenges and pushed through. I'm excited for your upcoming check with the extra pay It will be an adjustment getting paid once a month pay when I retire, plus the "extra check" phenomena will be no longer. DH will continue to work longer than I am, depending on how the finances settle in after I retire. At present he gets paid weekly, and I get paid biweekly, which has been helpful for the flow of the budget. It will be an even bigger adjustment someday when we are both on monthly income.

Our rate of savings has decreased quite a bit due to DH's work situation: decreased income = more stability at his job. So, it's a trade off.
A positive though: we bought my parents' truck from them and had enough in the car fund to purchase it outright. So once we have the other car paid off in a few months, we should be able to increase savings a little.
Another positive: despite the substantial income drop, we're still currently maxing out retirement funds. Not sure how long we'll be able to continue that, but for now, that's what it is.
I'm planning to post an update at the end of the month.
Hope everyone is having a great week!
