There was a time when Marilyn Monroe and Christie Brinkley represented the epitome of mainstream American beauty. A recent survey conducted by the beauty magazine Allure says that is no longer true. Instead, according to 64 percent of those surveyed for the "What's Beautiful Now: The Allure American Beauty Survey," mixed race women are now considered most attractive. Twenty years ago Allure conducted a similar survey so the magazine compared its findings then to the those from the recent study and according to Real Style Network, "[t]hey found that our tastes are changing and where once blonde hair and blue eyes were the epitome of beauty, now we embrace dark hair, curves and dark skin." So, more correctly, the study reflects the beauty ideals of white people and not Americans of all races. But the findings, while encouraging, can also be misleading. Yes, today Halle Berry, Beyoncé and Alicia Keys regularly top mainstream top beauty lists. And, for the most part, black and white Americans are in total agreement that these three women are especially beautiful. So, in that sense, black and white Americans demonstrate similar tastes in beauty. I read the article in the OP, it's interesting and kind of contradictory. They explain how people who are bi-racial or look bi-racial are seen as more attractive than either completely black or completely white people (which I tend to agree with as well), but then it goes on to complain and wonder why completely black women get marginalized in rap videos, magazines, etc. That's weird because they just said that the bi-racial women are seen as more attractive, so wouldn't it make sense they would get selected to be in the videos and magazines?

I personally wish more of my darker skinned Italian linage came out in me than the fair skinned English/Irish/Scottish linage. Not just for a "healthier look" (whether real or perceived), but for the tanning ability. Sun sunscreen is damned expensive. |

I personally wish more of my darker skinned Italian linage came out in me than the fair skinned English/Irish/Scottish linage. Not just for a "healthier look" (whether real or perceived), but for the tanning ability. Sun sunscreen is damned expensive.
I am 100% Italian. The ex-wife has English/Irish/Scottish linage... my kids have a tanned complexion, but when growing up had light or blonde hair...

I don't tan, I turn lobster red, peel, get a million more freckles, but still glow in the dark white. but it definately works with the red hair, green eyes & freckles..... first person to make a connect the dots joke gets to eat dirt....  |

I'm so fair skinned (Irish) that the running joke is I'm so white I glow in the dark. I don't tan, I turn lobster red, peel, get a million more freckles, but still glow in the dark white. but it definately works with the red hair, green eyes & freckles..... I still "tan" somewhat (increases my exposure in FL sun from 5 minutes to 10-15 before burning) but it is very lightly and always has a redish/brown hue. I figure I'll look tan if I get all the freckles to connect. Said in typical redhead style....lol. |

interesting article. Most of my cousins on my mother's side are mixed (black and white), and they are decently attractive. They all have brown curly hair and big brown eyes, and their skin is a nice tanned color. I think it's just an exotic look, especially since all mixes, even of the same races, don't come out looking exactly the same. I find black-Asian mixes to be extremely beautiful.

(Must be a thing with us Irish).. ;D Btw the most beautiful women that I have seen were in the Philippines at their beauty contests...And some of the Singapore Airlines Flight Attendants were so drop dead gorgeous it was impossible to not take your eyes from those lovely young women...IMHO

me too....but gave up early on as a teenager when I realized it just wasn't going to ever happen. Will say that by not being a sunworshipper and being more of a sun avoider, definately helped avoid the leathery aging skin that so many 'tan' friends ended up with as they aged.

I used to wish all my freckles would run together so I could have a "tan ********************** me too....but gave up early on as a teenager when I realized it just wasn't going to ever happen. Will say that by not being a sunworshipper and being more of a sun avoider, definately helped avoid the leathery aging skin that so many 'tan' friends ended up with as they aged. Ditto. However, I did have to experience many painful burns before learning my lesson  |

Yea but if you were fortunate enough to attend the Miss Manila Beauty Contests you would say that beauty exists there in abundance.. It is not just the Filipinas physical beauty but their costumes and their inner beauty as well that is just breath taking IMHO We got to meet a few of these lovely ladies up close and personal when they visited our Naval Hospital at Subic Bay in the Philippines.. |

I subscribe to Allure, so I read this survey last month. That particular issue was their 20th anniversary and they looked back over the beauty ideals of the past decades. It's interesting to see how perception of beauty have changed.

I'm not sure valid an article that uses Lil Wayne to bolster it's argument can be? While his song starts out using the term redbone - which I've always heard my friends use the term for a light skinned black chick, he also continues to say in that song that he would get with:
Eva Longoria, a butter pecan Puerto Rican, Meagan Good, D Woods, Angelina Jolie, Paris Hilton and [in about 3 years] Miley Cyrus. By the sounds of it in the song, he honestly wishes he could f*** every girl in the world. He actually says in the song - "I don't discriminate, no not at all".
The way I put it generally - I like hot women regardless of the race. I don't gravitate towards any one specific race, hair color, etc, etc. Beautiful is beautiful in my opinion. [/size]
