I must have spent too much time around the down and out. I can sorta understand why someone would live in a $210 a week motel room when two-bedroom apartments rent for $500 a month.
There's probably quite a bit more to it than an inability to amass deposits or pass a background check. You also need a reliable roommate and the utilities turned on. You're also giving up a few things when vacating the motel like cable, rides to work, potential roommates, the camaraderie of folks in the same rut, and the ability to gang together to protect the tips that you are carrying home. Getting your own place also means that you will have to take a more active role in turning away other folks who need a place to stay. That is, you'll no longer be able to cut of requests for emergency shelter with the argument that the motel will not allow it.
If you are splitting the $210 a week hotel room with another person or a rotating cast of other people, your monthly shelter cost is not $840 or the more accurate, annualized, $910 a month. It's probably something that looks like $420 a month and annualizes to $455 a month and includes several valuable amenities. The prospect of being on the hook for $500 a month plus utilities if a roommate flakes doesn't look so good now, does it?

half my paycheck on rent I wish!
After my break up with the ex in 2014 + living on my own, + paying full rent + now currently over time has been cut completely off for over half this year!
I now currently bring home $1,080 and rent is $1,100

Never hurt my son and he had two male roommates and once a female one. I'm not saying share a bedroom, that is a bit of a stretch , but having another guy also can introduce you to other women as well. They have sisters, cousins, etc.

I'd be paralyzed if I was living completely off savings right now.
Is this a monthly paycheck? Are you still withholding for retirement or something? I'm just not picturing this. The last time I took home this little monthly after withholding just for taxes, I earned $18,000 a year.
Can you get a second job since there is no overtime?

Who cares how it looks? Gay: that is in now lol!
When my wife and I were going through a rough patch and the plan was for me to keep the house (still is, jury is out on if we will make it on the other side) my plan was keep the house and get 2 roommates (3 bedrooms).
Even charging them just $500/month (I was planning more like $900 for the bigger bedroom and $600 for the smaller one) would more than cover any shortfall to the point I would not have to reduce my 401k contributions or anything (mortgage is ~$2,100). Heck not to be crass, without my wife and 2 roommates that are paying rent I come out ahead financially...

I know it's tough and I know you and Mrs. C are having a rough patch but it will pass. It's always easier to have paying people on board. You're also supporting your MIL. But you love your wife and your home. This will pass.

well I am planning on signing another year lease - cause they (the rental office) need to know now by the end of this month but with that said I am not staying here in this stinky ass apartment another full year - I've had enough of the smell that comes from my Indian neighbors downstairs and with that said I am just too dam lazy to pack and search for an apartment and find a cost effective place in a two month timeframe I am just too dam lazy to get a second job I could go back to the ghetto like my ex did - hellz -even live in the same building as her? when I got this apartment it was the lowest I could find in this area, which is 7 to 12 minutes away from work. so I am pretty sure I am not going to find a lower price apartment. so then sure I should live with a roommate in the area close to work and with that said HA! LOL - I ain't giving up my shit that I just purchased last year! Hmmm...roommate in this area - seems to look a little bit better now? Thanks

Is $1,080 half of your paycheck or your whole paycheck? I second, third, fourth the idea of a roommate. As I told you that is my backup plan if my wife and I end up separated or divorced.

once again I wish!
NOPE $1,080 is first pay of the month and two weeks later $1,080 again to cover the $120 for rent and everything else during the month. small simple stuff like grocery + gas + bills
and sometimes during the year I get paid three times during the month!

Thanks but ok here's the thing with that! roommate situation in this Morristown area. lets say I go to one of the 3 web sites for roommate (something like roommate.com or sharespot.com or craigslist - LOL) and I find a chick that resembles Scarlett Johansson the full figure version Johansson with little or not much stuff so I can keep most of my stuff I purchased a year ago. then we find a place to move into together and like now currently it's 7 to 15 minutes near my job. I'm so selfish - right! LOL When I was looking two years ago in this area I took the lowest place. the norm is $1,300 for one bedroom. 2 bedroom is bout $2,000 to $2,300! roommate in a two bedroom means my portion is $1,000 to $1,200 for rent.

If my DD were to have her own place she would easily spend 50% or more on rent. I guess that's why she's still living at home. I'm really happy because she is finally starting to socialise with her colleagues (she started this job, her first "real job", in Sept). I know they all earn basically the same salary as DD, so I'm hoping that at some point one of them will ask her to share an apt. I'm not in a great rush but is it very mean of me to hope that she moves out one day?

When I was a student, I paid about half my paycheck on rent, but the rent also included utilities. I didn't have a car payment, wasn't paying for insurance, it was before food prices skyrocketed, and I only used my car once a week. I think this sort of thing is common for students and those just starting out.
But once I got a decent job in a town with a reasonable cost of living, I didn't really consider moving to a 'cool' city where I'd be blowing half my paycheck on rent. I was keenly aware of the fact that i was damn lucky that I didn't have some expensive health issues other financial bad luck and wasn't going to go back to skating not he edge.

I've had them since college and now that I think about it- have never really lived alone. My first salary was 23K/year, but I had a roommate so my rent plus bills was $600/month. I continued to rent with roommates until I bought my first home at 26 and then still took in a roommate or boyfriend to share expenses. I don't know anyone who could afford to or were willing to spend that kind of money to live on their own until they were well-established.

Gooddecisions I think that was a gooddecision. ;-) Most of DD's friends are finishing school this year, so between her friends and her new colleagues, I'm hoping she decides to do the same in the next few months.

It doesn't really work for jobs any more, but some of the best apartments I've found were just from pounding the pavement. Places that are well advertised usually have expensive management companies and high resident turnover. Just go around neighborhoods you like looking for "For Rent" signs and pop into any small complexes to see if they might have anything coming available soon.

but yes I was driving around neighborhoods looking at places that may have for rent signs outside, and take down the number to call for availability. I was getting frustrated that web sites appeared to mainly have garden apartments. but what about the house apartments, and the above store apartments, or even high rise buildings. also there used to be a free apartment book thing at the grocery store. that I have not seen anymore. but my local Shoprite is weird!
on another note: I really like your avatar.

3/5 of my husband's paycheck starting in January on rent. Currently 150% of paycheck (monthly) because we got access to 401K in October and decided to max, because we're wacky impulsive folk in this household.
Stupid San Jose. (But we're also maxing HSA and 401K, so plenty of deductions up front, and he has a nothing commute that we're willing to pay for, so we're not exactly in a bad situation.)
