My guess is that no matter what Japan does those 6 reactors will melt down in 2 weeks. This will be a hot zone for decades.

It is hard to fathom such lose of life over a long period of time. Compassion seems to be lacking here in many respects to the current issue and past disasters.... I suggest we take a few moments and count our blessings. Usually when you think it can not happen to you , it does! "The Russian academy of sciences says in relation to Chernobyl, there have been 60,000 deaths so far in Russia and an estimated 140,000 in Ukraine and Belarus.
Meanwhile, the Belarus national academy of sciences estimates 93,000 deaths so far and 270,000 cancers, and the Ukrainian national commission for radiation protection calculates 500,000 deaths so far.
The mismatches in figures arise because there have been no comprehensive, co-ordinated studies of the health consequences of the accident. This is in contrast to Nagasaki and Hiroshima, where official research showed that the main rise in most types of cancer and non-cancer diseases only became apparent years after the atomic bombs fell." Respectfully...... Source John Vidal evironmental editor. Gaurdian.co.uk

How do you compare Reagan's Era to this one? In 1983, the worker-component of the baby boomer generation was 25 years old. It bought your dad's home that he paid $25,000 for and just cut the grass then sat on his ass-- for $75,000 and refurbished it. That same generation had to pay for college out of pocket because scholarships were suppressed in the late 1970s, not to mention, the economy broadened and able-people were sent across the country to build markets. What was "correspondence" then, isn't an accredited (a word made up by Ivy League people who didn't have to worry about tuition- it was covered for them) or recognized degree program now and yet, it was earned more applicably than anything pumped out of a campus today. Although we down-sized and wiped out many many long-running American corporations through some pickled accounting maneuvers, we still made most things here. Housing has been obliterated. Builders report February as the WORST starter home month EVER and tell tales of a lack of credit. That credit is there, but value stability isn't so, kiss off mortgages for another decade or give borrowers enough income to save and put 20% down (don't hold your breath for that one). We make NOTHING that regular families need to sustain, here in America. That and the state of global stability puts us behind the eight ball for staying ahead of rising costs and basic availability. We become prisoners of price without incomes tied to inflation. By the time things look like they might recover, financials like you will discover [the bill] the cost of this folly + interest. Without a carry-forward economy and jobs with the girth to keep us firmly on Earth, we... succumb to the holder of the debt, which will likely be-- old money families and more recent crooked financiers living here in America. At some point, the wealth of the world needs to admit it blew it. What is happening today is-- that your dad is a gutless creep who is afraid to pay for what he caused and is leaving that to YOU as part of your inheritance.
As for nothing "big" happening in Japan... a few minutes ago, the situation was labeled "OUT OF CONTROL" with whole island evacuations. Hiroshima was a hand grenade compared to a room filled with unstable core cylinders, each with more deadly potential than what the Enola Gay dropped more than 60 years ago.

Decoy, You made statements regarding the reactors and G.E. that had no basis in fact. The fact is, the generators were overwhelmed by the tsunami. The fact is, the Japanese utility that operates these reactord have been cited by the Japanese government for substandard maintenance practices in the past on numerous occasions. The fact is, the reactors are 40 years old. The fact is, you made three statements that are bullshit: 1) That G.E. supplied defective reactors, and 2) That you have warned and predicted the disaster in Japan, using words to the effect "as I have discussed on these pages for 3 years". 3) You have a habit of insinuating that you have "inside" knowledge, using such phrases as "information that I cannot divulge on these pages" and such nonsense as that, whether it involves scientists doing research in secure laboratories on medicines, matters of National security, banking, whatever. When pressed about specifics you skirt the issue and are non-responsive. I'm still waiting for you to name your bank where you claimed to be getting 5% interest on your savings. Funny, you claim to make high interest in a bank account while everyone else in America gets 1.5%, but then you vilify paper currency and claim that you have been a metals investor for "years". In fact, you claim that "gold, ng, oil, and gold (yes you said it twice) have always made you money. We're all still waiting for your top 10 moves in those areas over the last decade. We're not holding our breath though, because, as usual, the direct question proves to be your Kryptonite. You are running out of people that take you seriously out here buddy. I don't see your proof in proving his statements wrong, just your opinion. You statements are no more viable than Decoy's except I see Decoy use a lot more links and resources even if they are not factual. His attempt trumps your lack there of.

Reason,
Really? Here is the rest of the story from Decoy's "proof":
"Bridenbaugh told ABC News that he believes the design flaws that prompted his resignation from GE were eventually addressed at the Fukushima Daiichi plant. Bridenbaugh said GE agreed to a series of retrofits at Mark 1 reactors around the globe. He compared the retooling to the bolstering of highway bridges in California to better withstand earthquakes.
"Like with seismic refitting, they went back and re-analyzed the loads the structures might receive and beefed up the ability of the containment to handle greater loads," he said. "
If you really think that Decoy predicted the earthquake and tsunami, God bless. You might want to ask him for the winning Powerball numbers..... As for links, I would advise you, as well as Decoy, to read beyond the headlines in the future.
"I see Decoy use a lot more links and resources even if they are not factual. His attempt trumps your lack there of."
Ok. I'll try to use more "non factual" information in the future? WTF??

"And here is where the B.S. is. Those words above by Frank Q. 3 years plus back I was already hammering away on 'plate' movement and where the most likely of spots would be taken toll on. This information was collaborated from many scientists, and I simply revue that and I added my input. Well I did not state directly that 'Japan' would happen when it did. But Frank Q. under attack as Virgil has pointed out is set on discrediting."
And from page 40 of the Decoy409 Post:
"I have tried very hard to show what is all but inevitable for the past few years. 2 Class 'X' solar flares are racing at us as I write this morning. NASA has shut off the SOHO and a few others. Are you looking at USGS? They even stopped reporting all that happens but some things they can not hide such as Japan. I put a few things up a couple days ago. They are not a joke.
I don't know how to be any more candid than I have and I use the News to speak for me when there is so much more to be aware of. In life people the best things are free and were given to us only to need to care for, protect trough love and nurturing so they could continue on for everybody. When I say stop and smell the flowers once in a while,I mean just that. Close your eyes and let everything go away for a minute while you enjoy the beauty of the smell.
I stress what I say this morning as peole have become for the most part out of control. They have lost the way. Take today and reach oput to somebody in the simplest of ways, love and friendship. May that be between you and your wife, girlfriend, children,a stranger. Simply be nice to somebody today with honest intent.
I am in a slight loss for words this morning with the latest developments going on. At the same time I knew that all of these things come to be,and come to pass. May Hope,Faith and Love be amongst all of you."

Let's let old frank q. keep pumping his childish knowledge and lack of understanding (or lack of knowledge) guide him. He is doing a great job showing showing his 'wannabe' mind state.
But I did enjoy his panic post, and enjoyed how he reached out to see what others would be doing. Good move frank q.

Four posts in a row. Keep talking to yourself Frank because the truth is, nobody else likes you. You add nothing but negativity. Watch more posters leave. Get used to talking to yourself. So far we've gained more than we lost by far. If I have contributed to those that have left, with the exception of neo, I am happy with the outcome. As far as negativity, you might want to look the word up, then re-read the posts that you mid, as well as your buddies (the doomers) have "blessed" us with. You really have perception issues.

What can you do. Back to work for me. Later all. I'm pretty sure Moonbeam could lock this forum to not allow non-members to post. I know I couldn't post the Investing Basics and Beyond when I was a guest. Would suck to lose Neo's ability to post as guest though. IMO it is worth allowing Mid or Como to come in as guest as long as we still see Neo from time to time.

The situation in Japan is getting unreal.
They're looking at the possibility of total meltdowns in four of the reactors. Radiation levels are getting up to Chernobyl levels. Authorities have ordered an evacuation within 70 miles--which was deliberately low-balled to prevent chaos. And parts of the normally bustling Tokyo are apparently looking like a ghost town.

Pray it's not the winter and you are woman with child. Ever here that one?
My prayers go out to all of the people of Japan with none being left out.

To our mysterious guest poster: We recently lost a few posters whose views are compatible with your own. I suspect you might be one of them, but your posting style seems genuinely different. Different grammar, different syntax, different idioms. If you are one of our exiled brethren, I would ask you to respect the terms of your banishment. If not, why not grab a genuine user ID and join the fray? We're currently at a bit of a bear deficit. Also, if you are a newcomer, apologies for the less-than-enthusiastic "welcome".

An excellent tool for visualizing the extent of the devastation is available here. As for the markets, I can't help thinking this is "the" time to buy. Dollar is up to the moon with a temporary flight to safety. Half of Japan's power production and half of their auto production is shutdown, voluntarily or otherwise. There could be a "buy Japanese" charity trend in automotive buying in future, but that would still be months away. Buy the dips, as they say. Although, usaone will forgive me for pointing out that metals seem to be holding up under the onslaught.

Work on your Welcome Wagon, Virgil... yours is not to guess a spy but to invite with pretense or a punch in the eye.
Gotta give USAONE a lot of credit.... Frankq literally violates every possible community over and over and over and over, while USAONE ignores the offenses and faints over the fact that housing starts have "only" been as low as they were in 1983 (the year down-sizing back-drafted on corporate assholes who thought they could create invincible oligarchies and milk the nation dry by cheating labor out of contractually-given wages and benefits and put themselves out of business, like POOF!!!).
If you're gathering the "gist" of my posts, US... we're repeating a former PATTERN executed by Republicans then and now. My guess is-- the only way to stop the loop is to oust the stupes. Weather is warming up, loss of bargaining rights for union workers is heating up and elected idiots compromised the police contracts. WHO do YOU think is headed for a tar and feather bath and rail ride out of America?

Virgil, I'm self exiled former "brethren" not one of those recently voted off the island. Reading the posts here today from those who are total denial of the possible outcome of the nuclear crisis in Japan (and the subsequent impact on the world's financial house of cards) reminds me of why I withdrew and left no trace in the first place. I had to post and support V_L as I believe we're facing a horror beyond our current ability to comprehend AND I believe, it's only the beginning..... With that, I once again go back into hiding and watching.

You've GOT TO BE KIDDING ME Because a "Poster" uses an excessive amount of NON-FACTUAL links .... you (reason) tend to FOLLOW him? Talk about "SHEEPLE". One thing for certain ... our world will never recover, grow and flourish with thinking like that ....... Maybe we really are doomed !!!!!!!!!!! your credibility was lost at the word "sheeple", let alone you don't give any of the non-factual links and the disproving facts to debunk them. The reason I give Decoy more credibility is because he does research and even if some of the links are questionable. In the field of science(I am not sure if you are familiar with this) a scientist who researches has a lot more credibility compared to a scientist that just gives an opinion or educated guess. I have read many post of Decoy's since back in MSN and I found multiple links to be factual. Granite he may exaggerate the issue or express opinions not proven(no offense), he still does provide facts even though it might not be all of the time. In your statement I find no proof or evidence of your accusation, let alone sentences like "One thing for certain ... our world will never recover, grow and flourish with thinking like that ......." I am curious as to what is wrong with common sense. Yes, FrankQ may be able to discredit and prove non-factual statements by using Decoy's proof(which i am still not sure he did and would like the post that Decoy actually predicted japan's earthquake) I am still yet to see facts of his own sources proving Decoy wrong. I have nothing against Frank, I just want to see facts from his own sources that's all I am saying.

OK Guest. I'm sure V_L appreciates your support. In some parallel universe where gold hit $1,460.00 an ounce? Or even came reasonably close to it? It seems to me that in this reality, gold's all time high was $1,437.50/oz. I'm not quite sure what about "flight to safety" you don't understand. Sovereign debt is the safest, most liquid asset there is for investors/funds with zero appetite for risk. You expect mutual funds the world over to pile into gold ETFs because of a catastrophe in Japan? Must have missed that one in the fund manager's handbook.
