I have cruised on Norwegian before. No issues with the food. One thing I loved about the dining options was you aren't forced into a big table with strangers. You can choose that I think, but you can make reservations somewhere or just show up whenever you want to eat and eat alone. That's a lifesaver for an introvert! We also thought the entertainment was much, much better than what we had on the two Royal Caribbean cruises we did.
Our trip was the eastern mediterranean so we did Portugal, Spain, and Morocco, and the Atlantic was rough. In fact on Christmas day most people were in the cabin due to sea sickness. It is funny because rough seas don't both me, but as soon as things are calm I get sick. So I felt great when DH was sick, and vice versa.
Rome is great, and even in December it won't likely be cold.

I love Rome. Go. You have the money, now you have the freedom and time. Go to the Coliseum. Go to Vatican City (I highly recommend getting tickets online early to avoid the massive lines). Go to the Roman Forum. Or just walk around and eat gelato at every place you come to before you get on the cruise. And pizza, and a small carafe of house wine. Maybe we should plan a YM/WIR/WIRS group to Italy. ETA: We actually spent about 4 months in Italy when the kids were small. We lived between Milan and Genoa. I spent about one day a week in Milan and spent a small fortune at the American Bookstore. Because the kids were small and we were traveling mostly for business, I only got overnights to Venice and Florence, under circumstances over which I had no input and I could not enjoy. One of the outstanding moments of my life was returning to Florence with my son 20 years later. He went over there for business. I was so fortunate that his wife didn't want to go! We had an amazing time. It was my good luck to go with him when he was mature enough to enjoy wine! If it were not for him, I would not have gotten to see Michelangelo's David. And that is something not to be missed! I would love to go back to Rome just to see the Forum. I never got there to the Forum, and I've heard that's not to be missed.

seriousthistime I agree the David is breathtaking! I recommended that MIL and her husband go when they went to Italy, and all he does is tell anyone who will listen that he wasn't impressed and it's just some naked man When you are standing there in person I can't even describe it. It looks like he is in motion, and to think that a person made that is just unbelievable to me.

Ive been on quite a few cruises, I enjoy them. My DIL keeps feeding me, my god I'm so not hungry, she is tiny and eats constantly, I am so full I can hardly waddle I suspect you have not cruised in even longer than I (10 years). From what I see on the cruise discussion boards things (menus, entertainment, costs of extras......) has changed a LOT in just the past 2-4 years on ALL lines.

marvholly, you're so right! Princess has made it really easy to keep both weight (Spa diet) & costs (Soda & More sticker) under control

@patstab, don't forget to include annual visits to DGS in all your planning (more often if they decide to move to the US) Oh, and you will of course also visit DS and DIL while you are there anyway

I am home 2 flight delays. Was so exhausted driving home pulled in at a truck stop and slept 2 hours, I think I just passed out!
Ready for bed, tons to take care of and my alarm clock is in the packages I mailed back, hope I get up early enough to get granny paid for so I don't have to take her back!
Later all, good trip except for flying home.
I did buy the kids Xmas gifts in Tokoyo, wish I had had time to go on tours there. Go. Go back. Do it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Glad that your family visit was nice! Get a good rest, get caught up, and start planning... (I would try to go to Tokyo and Kyoto in the fall though. Drat, now my travel foot is itching, all up to the knee!)

Fresh Thyme is pretty good. They have a double ad day once a week where you can buy from both week's sales. Some of their fruit and vegetable sales are great bargains. Their meats and cheeses are yummy. They make-to-order pizzas that are good too. If you like sushi they have someone there making it fresh all day long.

Pat, what is the round stuff steak your son loves? My mom, sis and I split half a side of beef every year, and I'm always looking for new round steak recipes as there is usually a fair amount of that.

@patstab: I am thrilled for you. It sounds like it was a really great trip. You got to meet your DGS and your DIL, got out of Indiana, away from all your day-to-day challenges, and saw some place new to you. Your posts sound lighter, happier. Yay!!!
Pat, when was the last time you saw your DS in person?

OMG, @patstab! If you've never been to Hawaii, do be sure to go. It's really quite beautiful and can even be relaxing, depending on where you go, how much time you allow, and what you do. It's certainly not to be missed!

Good idea zib. im looking at a cruise in the med for 10 days in December. It's cheap on a Norwegian ship but have to check the airfare. Likely not the best time of year but that's ok. single for over 65 is about $700. I want to see Rome. That is a really reasonable price, but December...if you could wait a few months, say April/May, the Mediterranean is calm and comes alive. Rome is beautiful, but Florence is a flower...there is so much to see and do, so do it.

It's certainly not to be missed! My DH has been racking up the frequent flyer miles and hotel points with his new job. He hopes to redeem it so we can have a vacation in Hawaii for the 2 of us. My mom has already agreed to watch DD for us. He was hoping as an anniversary present for next year (our anniversary is in May). It may not happen then, but we shall see! If we can make it work, it will be great! We are looking forward to it!

Use a permanent textile marker and sew in tags. Tags can be removed, but the marker can't. Write in/on and tag everything.
If you don't like the look of the marker, write and sew the tag over the text. (If you write on the inside, the ink often goes through to the right side. If you put the tag on the garment's right side, over the "back side" of the writing, hiding it, it looks better.)
Also be aware that the ones taking clothing, money or other items may be staff or other residents. (I assume that no laundry is sent away.) Laundry may also be misplaced, and if forgotten (for instance in a dryer), may be "taken over" by the finder unless clearly marked.
In one of the places where I worked, there was a small security cupboard, sized perhaps 1.5x1x1 ft, bolted to the wall in each resident's room with the heads of the bolts inside. These were padlocked, and the residents had the keys on chains or textile strings around their necks, wrists or ankles. It would not have deterred a professional thief, but it helped against pilfering and petty theft.
Your DD needs some kind of locked box or drawer. Since I assume that it is not possible to secure items to the walls, see if it is possible to lock a drawer in her dresser (may mean having a better lock fitted than the ones that usually come with furniture), and/or attach a box with a good lock safely to the inside of a large drawer. She needs to be able to lock her money up, and, I think, preferably also other "special items". Ideally, a "safety box" for money and similar items, plus a locked dresser drawer would probably be good. She probably has some DVDs with a resale value and perhaps some other items, plus locking up a favorite toy can be a good idea. As long as you can keep an eye on her situation, I would assume that most thieves would probably focus on money, valuable items and new "neutral" garments that the thief (or family) can use or sell (since else you would certainly be loudly complaining and probably also moving your DD).
I am glad to hear that the visit is successful!
(In case DD does not want to leave, try to talk about what she would like for her next visit.)

A tip on the diarrhea. Did she eat something greasy? The movie popcorn would qualify if she put "butter" on it. But what did she eat at CB? If you get out of the habit of eating greasy foods, your body seems to lose some of the ability to process it. It may be that they cut down on fat where she is staying. Something to think about. The same thing happens if you quit eating dairy products; you develop an intolerance for it. I'm glad it was such a successful visit despite the upset stomach.

Very true on greasy foods. I am a vegetarian if I somehow manage to eat something that was cooked with meat or close enough that it got the grease, I end up with diarrhea.
That is why I am picky about what I eat and how it's cooked.
When I was in the hospital several years ago, they had me lock up everything. I was told anything of value has a way of walking away or disappearing.

Holy steaming pile of brown smelly stuff!!! What a lot of changes since you started your DD placement thread in July. And while most of them were very tough on you, all of them are/will be good for you. Time to enjoy life. May you have many years to enjoy yournew freedom with hubby and your latest family addition (DGS). Giant for you.
