They are only going to offer it to their streaming paid customers. The majority of ST fans are not Milennials. They have a brain. The average show only has 10 episodes now. Their service is $5.99 a month. That means you would be paying an average of $7 per episode? Only an idiot would do that.

It has been too long, I hope it continues on the TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY timeline.
The reboot is ok but has nothing on those.

Sooooo I'm excited but a) not sure I'll pay $6/month for it, and b) I'm trying to retain some hope that it'll be good. I scoffed at Enterprise for a long time but have actually been told it's really good, so I still need to check it out. But the opening theme song... I am curious which timeline it will be set in, and whether it'll be the new canon altered timeline or not. I... don't hate that they did that, since I think there's a ton of latitude now for "rebooting" the franchise and maybe it was the best way to do it, but I know a lot of fans really resent the changes. I'd also have preferred a new show that took place in the original timeline (TNG is my favorite forever) but I think the train is already rolling down the tracks re: the new timeline..

Agree TNG is my favorite but after watching DS9 a second time it comes in a close 2nd. TOS is great, VOY had its moments but you have to read the books to get a satisfactory ending. Enterprise is definitely worth watching with several likable characters and you can get it on Netlix.

That theme song is the absolute WORST. I actually never finished ENT. It wasn't as horrible as I feared, but I could still never really get past Bakula as Archer. I too would prefer a Trek set in the original timeline. The reboots are okay - but they are not really what Trek is about for me. Would love to see them pick up on some of the threads of the story that carried over to the STO game; species 8472, war with the Klingon Empire, etc.

My husband did start watching some Enterprise on Netflix and said he liked it, and I've had several friends who are huge Trek fans tell me DS9 is really the best. I didn't watch a ton of that so I'll have to go through that sometime too. I did watch Voyager in reruns and liked it. We started watching TOS on Netflix a few months ago and I think we stalled around halfway through the first season. It's good for us history-wise though since neither of us have seen a ton of TOS. My husband wants to see more along the TNG timeline, like something taking place after the E is retired. I told him that whole timeline is blown to smithereens now and they can/will change whatever they want.. Weird if you think about it.. the only 'old' stuff that's even canon anymore is Enterprise... but then again, the events of Enterprise should have built off of first contact/Dr. Cochrane, which could have happened differently since the movie "First Contact" could've happened differently now. (is that confusing?)

Voyager is, and forever will be, my favorite, because Janeway. DS9 is very good, the Dominion arc is one of my favorites, but there was just something about Avery Brooks as Cisco that I could never fully get behind. It also annoyed me that when the Dominion war stuff really started getting started they would break it up with these weird, pointless, fluff episodes. Like you have a really compelling plot going here - follow it!
The only Trek's I haven't been able to watch are TOS, and ENT. I have seen some of both, but TOS is just really difficult for me to get into. ENT was again, not horrible, it just wasn't as compelling.
I still have a plan to do a chronological (from the Trek universe standpoint) viewing of all the episodes, so I will end up seeing TOS and ENT eventually.

The bun of steel! Yeah season 1 hair was the WORST. Honestly until they finally put her in the bob in season...5? Her hair was pretty much a disaster.

We had a neighborhood kid we were friends with who tried to convince us that Deanna Troi's original name was supposed to be Deanna Trek so my brother and I still call her that

And it is not not infatuation for pointing out the idiocy that is coming from a particular group of people.

It is pretty obvious when you find a way to slip it into topics where it makes no sense. Instead of generational bashing and calling people idiots maybe you could spend that time figuring out how you could make more money to actually afford things like nice cell phones, vacations and new Star Trek episodes. The math is correct, you would need to pay for three months of the service to get all 10 episodes, they don't do partial months with those subscriptions. So please explain how it would cost $7 an episode?

For the true Trekkie the costs we are talking about to watch a new Star trek series are irrelevant.

Anyone else see the Discovery premier last night? I thought it was good, only issue I had is how they overdid it on the look of the Klingons, now you have 3 completely different looks for them.

I haven't seen it yet - but I did subscribe - so I'll watch it sometime this week.

what did people think? I taped it. I'm not a huge trekkie, but am interested. I am also watching The Orville as it's a clear ripoff/tribute to Star Trek and i'm enjoying it as well. The special effects are first rate, I know it’s 12 years since the last series on TV but it blows away anything from the past. I just hope it being behind the CBS Access paywall doesn’t end the series prematurely.

I watched it on regular TV last night - so it had WAY too long/too many commercial breaks (as they had to stretch it to make it fit a timeslot). Which made me have difficulties "staying with the show".
I'm not sure how I feel.
I really like Michele Yeoh which means I liked her in this role too. I love that Doug Jones always does a good job in costume... I know Sonequa Martin-Green is a current star (walking dead?) but I haven't seen that (or anything else she's done - to my knowledge. Her charisma carried her for me in this episode.
I like Bryan Fuller (writer) - but now I'm hearing he's no longer involved...
That said: it was pretty looking. It had nice touches that tied it back to the Trek universe/shows. I didn't find the acting very compelling and some of the plot seemed kind of forced. Like did Sonequa's character really need to drop into technical/numbers to indicate her Vulcan inclanations? And when Doug Jones went into the spiel about his "species" in the middle of a "crisis" I was like "What are you doing!!!"
It is the first episode and I understand it needs to appeal to non-trekkies so I'm willing to give it a couple of episodes - except it looks like I need to PAY to see them... I'm not sure I want to pay for something that might be a waste of my time.
So, for me the jury is out... I think I will wait and if it seems good - I'll binge watch.

The fact that it is behind the paywall makes it a non-starter for me. Both because I think it is ridiculous, and I do think that it will doom the show. I see no need to get invested in something that is bound to get cancelled. If CBS were serious and committed, why not run it as a new fall show on the network?
Also, the fact that is is another prequel is another point in the negative column. I want the Trek universe to move forward, not keep going backwards.

It took several attempts, but I was finally able to get Discovery to load. I've watched the first three hours and I really like it.
