My next house is going to have a built in Kitchen Aid. I have seen it in design magazines where it just folds out when you need it and then you can fold it away again. Instead of having it always out on the counter.

I have a tilting Artisan. Like Oped, I keep mine tucked away mostly because I find it a pain-in-the-butt to clean after every use. I much prefer my relatively lightweight KitchenAid hand mixer. I just pop the beaters off, wash them, and I'm done. I seem to spray everything within 10 feet with whatever I am mixing in the big rig. As for kneading, I actually prefer to do that by hand. I've gottent to the point where I can tell just by touch whether I've done enough kneading. As for the other attachments, I haven't found one yet that I think I need. I have a hand-crank pasta maker, a meat grinder that attaches to the kitchen counter, a Cuisinart ice cream maker, a small chopper for slicing/dicing and a couple of different graters. I keep hoping I'll find some magical use for the KitchenAid, but I guess I went so long without one that when I finally got one, I'd figured out how to make do just fine without it.

I've had a KitchenAid mixer for about 20 years. It's still going strong. The attachment feature is really handy if you need and use a lot of specialty devices. They are very well designed and quite functional.
Now that they are available in pretty much any color anyone could want, I have been seriously considering getting a purple one. But then I see the teal one and want that. And then I see the pretty robin's egg blue one and want that. So maybe I'll just keep my white one 'cause trying to pick out a color would probably just make me dizzy and I'd end up with orange or something I really don't care for just because I became confused.
You can't go wrong with a KitchenAid mixer. I also have a KitchenAid dishwasher, and it's really good, too. It doesn't have any attachments, though, and I'm pretty sure it won't make pasta. If you want to make pasta, you're probably better off getting the mixer.

Actually, Cooks Illustrated gave comparable reviews to the Cuisinart as the KitchenAid. I never saw them review a Bosch. We did look at the Cuisinart, but I seem to remember it being more expensive. Once upon a time. The gears in all KA were made of metal, but this is not the case in the newer models. I think they are still made of metal in the Pro, maybe the Artisan (you need to research this) but in the lower priced models, they are made of plastic. This is going to be the weakest link. I would take an older model over a bigger, newer one for this purpose. You want to pay attention to the amount of power in the model. If you are planning on making a lot if bread doughs, then you really want the more powerful motors. I think that the Pro model is upwards of 600, where the lessor models can be as low as 175. The difference is significant. I have the cheaper Kitchen Aid, and I can smell it burning when I try to mix more than two loaves worth of bread dough at a time. That's why I'm thinking of upgrading.

I figured that we needed to leave it on the counter, and the color would go with just about everything. The colors that are available in the Pro model are more limited though. I seriously want the pasta attachment, but know if I start down this route, I'll be making pasta waaaay more than it's healthy for us to eat! Along the same lines of the ice cream maker!

I have the tilt head one, definitely get the one that lifts the bowl instead if you want to do heavy duty stuff with it. That said, I love mine. I have no attachments though. Mom has one of each (I think) but hers did heavy duty work, she made cakes for people when we were kids. I've delivered a million wedding cakes with her. Hers are still functional and fine. Mom's aunt has a tilt head one that is who knows how old that's still going but getting noisy. She also has the one that lifts the bowl, and for all I know Mom has that one now because I haven't seen it at her house in ages. I agree, get at least one spare bowl if you get anything to go with it.

I have one of the cheapy ones; the 4.5 QT tilt head. I was upgrading from a cheap hand mixer, and wasn't really convinced I would need/use it that much, and didn't want to spend a fortune on one of the Pro/Artisan models.
Now I can't imagine my life without one. I do make bread dough in mine, but wouldn't do more than a single standard loaf (no more than 4 cups of flour) since I think it would over tax it, and the bowl would be too small.
I really want to upgrade, but 1) I don't really have the counter space (the small one takes up enough room), and 2) for as often as I use it (maybe once a week during "baking" season" I can't really justify needing one of the bigger ones.

I have a tilt head one that I got about 7 years ago, not a huge fan. I don't have the counter space so have to move it around a lot. It shook and burnt after about 4 years. My boss re-calibrated the motor and it's less problematic now, but it doesn't get much heavy duty use. I like it for frosting and meringues, and anything that requires a lot of light quick beating. I prefer the food processor for pie crusts, have a Cuisinart ice cream maker, and have never attempted bread or pasta (the pasta attachment is ridiculously expensive!)
The new colors and attachments are alluring, but if I ever replace it I would probably look at Breville or Cuisinart first.

I recently told GF I wanted to buy a pasta machine, and found one at a local store. She remarked that Kitchenaid has a pasta attachment you can put on their mixers. I told her I want a hand cranked machine, not an attachment. She replied that I wasn't listening, she is saying she wants a Kitchenaid standing mixer. Anyone have anything negative to say about these mixers before I take the plunge? Neither negative nor positive, but this is all part of the pattern we keep remarking on when you post in other threads that GF views you as a supplier of luxury goods and sees no reason to save $ or change her financial situation. $30 hand crank pasta maker becomes $300 stand mixer that (although a great kitchen tool, you didn't even know or think you needed...) is a status symbol.
I love my KA, but bought it because I use it 2-3 times a week and regularly use it for things that are tough to do with a hand mixer. You're buying something you didn't previously even know you "needed" because GF thinks it would look nice on the counter top. Not that you wouldn't find ways to use it - of course you can find ways to use it - but it wasn't on the radar when you first looked for your $30 pasta maker and this is how the pattern continues.
I already bought the pasta machine, we've made fettuccine, spaghetti, and garganelli in the last two weeks. I'm know the KA is a want and not a need, which is why I'm eyeing it for her birthday present. I've used my mother's multiple times in the past week, so it is something that would get a lot of use, by both of us.

I think you should find an older one for $5 at a garage sale and act confused when she's not impressed Don't have a KitchenAid but I've been very happy with my overpriced kitchen toy that produces excellent bread dough among other things. I definitely bake and cook much more with it to do the heavy lifting.

And, I've had my artisian model KA for like 12 years or so. I've never had a hand mixer, the KA is simple to use and gets the job done.

Some of us girls are practical too If I mention I want something and you give it as a gift: sweet, you listened. Points for you. If you give me something because you think I need to do more of it, like a vacuum: Bam, you lose. What you lose depends on how fast you run.

Appliances are great gifts, especially if the woman has expressed interest in said appliance and you know she won't spend the money herself. Over the years I've recieved oven mitts, a baker's rack, and a food processor as birthday/Christmas gifts. I would be ecstatic if I got a KA for my birthday.

My KA is about 15 years old. I would be surprised if it ever dies. My biggest complaint is how heavy it is and how much space it takes up. I do think it's one of those things where I'm complaining about the very thing that makes it as reliable as it is.

Costco just sent out a coupon book. The KA Pro-series is going to be on sale. If you are a member, you might get a good deal there. I think it included a couple of attachments like the dough hook, etc. I don't own one, though, so I don't know if that comes with all KA stand mixers.

We have the KA Classic (Walmart/cheap-o). It was one of my Christmas presents seven or eight years ago. It was just fine until DH started making breads 18 or so months ago. It is now off-kilter. I love the breads he's making, and I don't want him to stop that. So, we are getting the one on sale at Costco as a mutual Christmas present. There are only three colors though; I know silver was one of them, and that's what we'll be getting. We have an appliance garage, and hopefully it will fit it there as well as the Classic. We have the grater/slicer attachment, and that's darned handy for buying blocks of cheese and grating them ourselves in stead of buying grated cheese.
I also have this pasta maker which is great.

I just checked, since we're going to get it anyway. At Costco, The pro-line has a 6-quart bowl. It's regularly $350. There is a $60 off coupon that is good for October 29 - November 29. On Kitchen Aid dot com, the pro-line has a 7-quart bowl. It's regularly $700.

The pro line at KitchenAid has 1.3 HP...... which is nearly 1000 watts. Thus the difference in price.

I took the plunge and bought her a KA Artisan Series 5 Quart Stand Mixer, in almond cream, the color she wants.
Her birthday is tomorrow.

I'm glad you got it. I think it is "funny," though, that "Almond" is back. Almond was the color of the 1980s that replaced avocado green and harvest gold as kitchen colors. It was the color of the stove and kitchen countertops in this house. I've replaced them, but it's a nice, neutral color.

She said almond goes well with the color on the walls and in the kitchen.

I love my KA mixer. It was given to my parents for their wedding in 1965 so it is 50 years old and still running strong. I realize they don't make them like that anymore. I did buy a backup from GoodWill for less than $100 but have never used it.
The scraper paddle is a wonderful accessory. I have all the shredding attachments (used lots), sausage maker (used once) and something else (never used, can you tell). I want the pasta maker for it. I also want the glass bowl but it is not supposed to fit my mixer. I do have a second bowl with a lid for it.

I almost got an Artisan model at a yard sale this weekend. It was brand new in the box with a bunch of attachments. Sadly, the woman in front of me snagged it! Boo hoo!
