. . o O (Mimi the sardine? ) I was desperate because I'd keep forgetting to take my lunch, or accidentally leaving it on the train, or it would get forgotten in the lunchroom fridge or sometimes even forgotten under my desk. I needed something Bright and Fun and eye catching and washable... if something leaked or if it got forgotten for a week or two.... yikes! It was pricey (but I've been using it for more than 2 years now) - but as promised it's machine washable (gentle cycle) and air dry. It's not particularly insulated but it keeps everything reasonably cold for 4 hours or so with an ice pack or a very cold drink in the bag. But best of all it's hard to forget. Mine's a bright pink with red swirly flowers. Now when I leave it behind on the train, someone immediately pipes up with a "miss are you forgetting something!?" or "Miss is that your bag!?" I can't miss it at my desk (or if it's under my desk) and I didn't care if it was embarrassing the goal was to take my lunch and eat it! Half the battle for me is dealing with my gnat sized attention span. I'm glad I don't have to drive to work... I might get lost on the commute. ;D You can find them on Amazon and at reuseit.com and probably on the Mimi the Sardine home page. I wouldn't say they were the best for long term food storage and they don't hold bigger tupperware containers (which isn't a bad thing if you are trying to eat the correct amount of food!). They are sturdy and washable though.

My DH gets the following everyday: OJ in his sippy cup to drink enroute Homemade muffin for breakfast when he gets there Trailmix or granola bar for mid-morning snack Yogurt, carrot sticks or another veggie and a fruit (currently orange or apple) for lunch Fruit and a string cheese single for afternoon snack. He carries it all in a kid's lunch box that is flat enough to put in his brief case--it is looking pretty dingy tho, time to watch for a clearance sale. Me? I eat oatmeal for breakfast and usually yogurt or cottage cheese for lunch and a fruit here at the homestead. Since he hates tuna, that is one of my lunch options (secret indulgence? LOL!) I recently saw hard-boiled eggs "pickled" in a jar of jalapeno peppers at a kitchen boutique, I am gonna create my own, I'll report back on how it worked...I am hoping that it will work...that would be a good switch up for a protein in his lunch to replace yogurt (and less sugar!)

"What do you guys "brown bag" your lunches in? Tupperware and brown bag? Lunch bag?"
I have an insulated vinyl lunch bag. Actually I have about half a dozen but I am only using one. I come home for lunch most days but brown bagging it still applies. Lunch has to be pretty much made if I'm going to eat it. Left overs is my main lunch option. Or salmon salad with celery sticks.

What do you guys "brown bag" your lunches in? Tupperware and brown bag? Lunch bag? I used to have several vinyl or insulated canvas bags but years of use (or DS losing them) has left me with just one or two. I pretty much leave them for him to use. I got the first one (a freebie from ex-h's work) and just loved it. It was big enough to hold a few containers and had a long strap so I could carry it over my shoulder--a HUGE plus for me since DS was still small and I'd have to juggle him, his diaper bag, my backpack and my lunch (and sometimes the carseat) at 5:00 in the morning. With the shoulder strap it made it super easy to carry and freed up my hands. Now I'm using plastic grocery bags because they're quick and easy (we have a fridge at work so I don't have to worry about keeping anything cold) and I can bring a loaf of bread and all the other stuff if I run out of time to make my lunch before. For a while I was carrying an old metal Peanuts lunch box--I'm thinking of using it again now that I have two (I like it, but was afraid I'd break the plastic latch). The bad thing is that it doesn't hold as much The good thing is that it doesn't hold as much (portion control

I have been brown bagging for forever... I usually cook a large quantity of something on Sunday, soup, meat/beans or roast meat like pork or beef so I have leftovers for lunch during the week. I try to make it a habit to make a pot of basmatti rice so I have a base for lunch. I have a big selection of frozen veggies to chose from. So I'll start with rice, pile on the meat and veggies, and go from there. Sometimes I'll carry salad and a can of tuna to mix in with it. One thing I rarely have for lunch is sandwiches. I can't eat cheese during the day (makes me sleepy), and I don't enjoy a sandwich w/o cheese so I'll eat rice/meat/veggies for lunch and have my sandwich when I get home. I have a collection of plastic and glass containers to carry my one dish meal in and I usually put the food in another bowl from the company kitchen to heat up in the m/w. I had a really cute insulated lunch box (it was a fabric reproduction of a factory workers lunch box like the one my DF carried every day) but the cat tore it up. So for now I'm using a plastic shopping bag in my tote I carry every day. I do have to complain that not being able to eat cheese during the day is a real downer and really limits my lunch selections. I will probably continue to carry my lunch until retirement, because I hate the thought of spending on one lunch what I can spend to make a whole weeks worth of lunches.

I was a big time lurker on the msn boards but, its a new year and time for change. Count me in for the brown bag challenge. Its part of my debt reduction plan for 2011. I stock up on lean cuisines when they are around two bucks each, but also take leftovers and sandwiches. We have a cafe at work where no cash is needed, just swipe your ID badge and it comes out of your check...this has been very dangerous for me in 2010...no more in 2011! ;D

Hi everyone - I'm another one of those out from the shadows former lurkers.
Sometime last year, I got into the terrible habit of eating out for lunch almost every day. Bad for both the waistline and the wallet.
So far ths year, I've brown bagged it everyday. I like plain old roasted turkey and buy the kind that comes in recloseable tubs - so if I don't have anything leftover from dinner I can always take a turkey sandwich. I've also been taking an individual sugar free jello dessert. It sort of tricks my sweet tooth into thinking I've had my sugary dessert - but they are only 10 calories each.
I need to stock up on a few lean cuisines too and keep them in the freezer at work - I used to do that so that I always had something to eat, even on days when I was running late and didn't want to take the time to fix lunch.

Waffle....I too am a long time lurker and in the same boat. I got lazy and ate out way too often last year. I figured that I spent on average $6.80 or so on lunch every day. So now, I bring lunch and transfer $6.80 a day into my EF. I know it's a small amount every day, but it will add up!
