I was in school in the 50's and early 60's and I don't ever remember anyone trying to change kids over. And if anyone says I'm too old to remember - a pox on your first born

i didn't notice it until the last month we were together. nobody else in the band seemed surprised by it. really? genetics indicate that brown eyes are a dominant trait. odds are that you shouldn't have been the only brown-eyed band member. yeah. if i was the only BLUE EYED guy in the band, that would have been a far more predictable result.

I'm right hand dominant but I knit with my left hand. I just picked up knitting that way. So you knit reverse from "normal"? That's so cool and weird lol, never seen anyone doing that!

I can print, barely legibly with my left hand but I have to think the entire time I'm doing it. I can barely print legibly with my right hand and I'm right handed. Writing anything with my left hand is out of the question. I remember in kindergarten or first grade there were a couple of lefties. The rest of us were jealous because they got the cool scissors. I have some cousins that are left handed and they never mentioned being berated for it. Though being a lefty was probably pretty far down on the list of things that the adults had to correct those little hellions for.

ha, I have a pair of those really cool scissors. my first year on the job out of college, I think I "lost" 3 or 4 pair of black-handled scissors that must have just grown legs. 13 years later, I packed the next pair I ordered - the orange-handled cool ones - into a box as I cleaned out my desk and moved on to the current job. wonder why those didn't grow legs...?

I write lefty, but I've been forced by the dominant culture to use a mouse with my right hand.
One of my coworkers is a lefty and she mouses lefty as well, one time I sat at her desk and I was like "how the hell do you manage?". It felt so weird to me.
Wiki tells me that Bob Dole, Rand Paul, and Hugh Jackman are all lefties. My grandmother, a lefty, was forced by the nuns to write with her right hand; got hit on her hand with a ruler. She taught my uncle, also a lefty, to write with his right had so he wouldn't get that kind of treatment. A couple of the nuns used to comment on my "backhand" slanted writing, but no one every tried to make me change to my right hand.
I'm fairly ambidextrous. I use a mouse with my right hand at work and left hand at home.

They must have been some of the first created ever because they were so dull you had a hard time cutting paper. They were the green handled ones with rounded tips. Funny how I can still remember that, but can't remember what I did yesterday.

Your elementary teachers must have thought their left-handed pupils were 'cutters in the making', hence the the dullness of the blades.

I was at a Catholic school at that point, so maybe you have a point. They never actually tried to make me change though.

I went to Catholic schools too in the 1950s and 60s and being left-handed was a non-issue. As for cutters-it was only in later life when the psychological disorder of youth cutting themselves became known. Understanding what cutting meant now reminded me of a good childhood friend of mine who was always cutting up her arms. It never dawned on me then she had a psychological diorder. She was the most pretty and popular girl in the class. But looking back now, I know she did have some issues.

I knew you were kidding. But based on my very small sample the only kids in that school were the ones whose parents were Catholic and wanted them there and the problem children the public school didn't want or couldn't handle. So maybe there was a point (haha) to the dull scissors. Sorry that your friend felt the need to cut herself

It's not as if she was cutting into her skin to 'write' something like a person's name. The cuts had no rhyme of reason to them. Just a cut here, a cut there, no design. Of course know I/we know what is going on within the person's head. I will say one thing about attending Catholic schools. For the most part we learned manners. Not a bad thing to learn.

It was the most enjoyable church service I went to all week too, since it was actually geared toward the audience of kids. I didn't lack from manners lessons outside of school though. However, I didn't learn that not being able to see the chalkboard from my desk was not normal until I went to public school.
