Huh, we didn't have this back in the stone ages.
I just looked into how it works for DD. If you've met the prerequisites you can sign up for any community college class. You can also test out of the prerequisites. The class is paid for by the district but the student/family has to purchase the books/course materials.

We had this when I was in high school. You took the classes at the HS like usual but you received college credit on top of credit for high school. The program was brand new when I started so there weren't a lot of classes available yet. I did college credit Spanish so I could get that out of the way. The amount of classes offered has expanded significantly since 2002.
When they started the program had an issue with all the credits transferring but that has largely been eliminated since IWCC now has agreements with all of Iowa's universities/colleges and the University of Nebraska system. May still be a bit of an issue if you are looking outside the area but I don't know for sure.
I paid $50 and had to fill out an application for IWCC so I could make sure to get credit for the classes. I also had to be an AP student at the time, they didn't allow just anyone to take college credit courses. IDK if that has changed since 2002 or not.

I would have loved the opportunity to do this in HS. As one of the few students to come in with no college credits, I was last in line to get the classes I needed. After my freshman year, I had to take 18 credit hours most semesters and a class over the summer to graduate in 4 years. (Freshman year was 15 and 16 credits each semester since I was running track). I had friends come in with all 3 calc classes done. That sets you up big time. Instead I was taking it at 7:30 in the morning because that was the only time it fit my day.
