This couple paid $7,500 in subscriptions they haven't used in the past 18 months coming to $400/month... In just subscriptions!!!

We have a subscription to the LA Times. $12 per month. DH reads it daily. I look at the weather map so I know how to dress for work and read the comics on Sunday .

No cable, no Netflix, no gaming sites, no music subscriptions or services, no Drop Box, no blogging sites, no paid social media, nada - nothing.

DH pays for backup to the Cloud under a service agreement, but he uses it faithfully AND his business pays for it. I think it's about 60 or 65 buck a year.

I have subscriptions to two popular women's interest magazines, but I don't pay for them. I get them free as BOGO when I renew my girls' subscriptions (their present) at Christmas time.

I guess I'm pretty boring . . .

Netflix, I have Cook's Illustrated and Bon Appetit, TD probably has about 8 magazine subscriptions.  Both of us have lifetime subscriptions to Sirius bought outright.  I have data on my iPad.  Oh, and the Seattle Times.

DH has a subscription to backpacker magazine. And he makes his monthly trek to the comic book store to buy GI Joe comics. Neither of which he reads promptly.

My DS has sports illustrated for kids and Boys life. He devours those immediately. And it's a good thing he has them. He's suddenly got all these collage projects at school..He also has a growing Simpson's comic book collection.

I don't read. I finish like one book a year. I'm hoping to fix that in 11 years, when we are down to one child in the house.

I'm practically paranoid about recurring monthly payments, and what we have, we use.

We get the local daily paper but we read it. My gym membership is $11/month but I'm there daily unless it's good bicycling weather. We pay $14.95/month for a service plan with the local plumbing and heating company. It includes routine maintenance and priority service but sometimes I wonder if we're getting our money's worth.

I replaced my computer recently and, not knowing about Open Office, I bought MS Office. It was a real pain to find a version that wasn't a monthly "cloud" subscription.

Daily newspaper.
Land line, 2 cell phones, cable TV, utilities.
2 gym memberships.  3 in the winter.

Newsletters - OMG over the internet.  myfitnesspal, calorie counter, Flylady, public TV, 3 clubs. Various investment webpages. I'm sure there are more.

If I look at how many places I have to have a user name and password, does that count as a subscription?

I have an indoor archery membership  for league 3 months out of the year.  I don't participate in a lot of their tournament activities.

I belong to a shooting academy out of state no monthly cost but a life membership.  I haven't been since 2006 because of the distance, various personal issues like deaths in the family, the house nearly flooding 2 separate years, scarce ammunition because of the war.  Mainly to cut back on expenses.

Netflix (gift) and Amazon Prime for TV ($99/year).  Use these both a lot.  Older son gets Muse and Boys Life. One was a gift and the other is part of his Boy Scout dues.  He reads them cover to cover.  Younger son gets High Five or Highlights or something like that.  Also a gift.  He sort of goes through it, but I think he's aged out and needs something at a higher level to be interested. 

I usually get one magazine subscription every year from my Girl Scout niece for $15-$20.  Typically, it's Discover or Scientific American, but last year I switched to Money.  I used to like it years ago, but either they've dumbed it down or I've just become a lot more knowledgeable, because it seems pretty lame.  I page though it, but will switch back to Discover this year because the kids like that one too.

Boyfriend pays for Amazon Prime and some mobile version of center ice that lets me watch all the games since the Penguins are out of market here.

I have Netflix, gym membership, Food Network and US Weekly. I have a few others but those are $5/year or I cancel. Used to have an eye makeup one but I didn't update when it's credit card was compromised. That was $25/month I think.

LOL minnesotapaintlady!  I've got a subscription to Money Magazine too, & either they've dumbed it down, or I've gotten smarter over the years.  (I'm planning to let it run out.)  We also get a gift subscription to a magazine from family every year.  And, after taking a couple of long road trips, I've grown to love Sirius radio.    Oh, & we get the Sunday newspaper, too.

I have a stack of magazines to get through.  In my defense they were the $5-$10 subscription sales from Amazon.  Time, Popular Mechanics, Family Handyman, Better Homes & Gardens and I think a couple more. 

I have Amazon Prime and a subscription to Evernote, but I pay for those annually. 

I did have a weekly subscription to a CSA box but let that lapse as the majority of produce I was getting was wilted or rotten.

We have Hulu and Netflix, but we will drop one or both when we go back to the US.  I also have a subscription for a nutrition board that I will drop after the 3 months are up that I paid for (12 bucks total).  DH signed up for a razor and shave gel subscription, and we've figured out that he doesn't need as much stuff coming to him each month so we will put it on hold until he uses up most of what he's got and then reduce what he's ordered. My friend is trying to get me to do a meal plan subscription that I can either do for 18.99 a month or there is a sale where you pay upfront for a year and it works out to 14.90.  I always thought meal plans were ridiculous, but I saw a couple of weeks worth from my friend and they have 4 new recipes each week plus a shopping list and tips on batch cooking or doing some prep work ahead of time.  It really does make things easy and helps diversify what you cook.  I am considering it, but I think what I might do is pay the higher amount for the monthly subscription to really try it out and if I like it there should be another annual sale on black friday.

We did have a NY Times subscription for a while and then the Wall Street Journal, but we prefer to have the actual paper instead of just the online access so we will start up one or both once we move back to the States.  I had a free trial for the Times crossword, and DH encouraged me to pay for it but I won't.  I found a free crossword puzzle app that isn't nearly as good but is entertaining enough for being free.

Sunday Globe, WSJ, local weekly gossip rag...I mean, town newspaper, Amazon Prime (for which I have NEVER used the video portion), 2 Spotify accounts, Netflix, cable, Sports Illustrated, Lacrosse magazine, beer-of-the-month club, AAA, Cook's Illustrated/America's Test Kitchen every other year or so...I think that's it.

I also read cereal boxes.

We are big on news, information, entertainment and sports.

A good chunk of these will get dropped as the kids move on. Others are gifts DH and I give to each other for birthdays and Christmas (instead of expensive baubles, LOL).

The most disturbing thing about the couple in the article is that while wasting money on subscriptions that didn't use, they were in debt to the IRS.  What a mess!

$14.95/month for Audible (I listen to a lot of books and this is worth every penny).
I think DH gets 4 or 5 magazines/month - say $50/year.
I get Parents (just paid $8 for 2 years) and Runner's World ($10/year).

Was is that Dollar Shave club, or something similar? I considered that, but also realized I would be getting too many razors for what I needed. So did some research and found that the DSC are razors are made by Dorco. So I just order what I need of Dorco razors off amazon, using my Prime for free shipping. easy peasy

garion2003 I tried to get him to do dollar shave club, but he went with Harry's which is still cheaper than what he was paying for blades alone before.  So this way it is like he gets the nice shave gel for free.  But I am going to have him stop it because we have 2 months worth right now, and even though he shaves every single day he is getting more than he needs.  We are going to move likely in December so we don't need a bunch of extra junk to go with us.

I might do dollar shave club for myself.  I don't want to pay so much for razors.  I was using a schick quattro, but then I bought a cheap store brand 4 blade razor and it cuts me up worse than a two blade disposable even using shaving cream.

Prime (student version), Netflix, and kindle unlimited. Not sure if I'm keeping the kindle one - though so far I've read far more than ten dollars worth of books. Probably going to get sling tv soon, probably use hulu plus since I'm cord cutting and I don't think I can get regular hulu on roku. Maybe getting around to joining a 20 a month gym that includes unlimited classes.

Chicago Tribune, Cooks Illustrated, Money, Kiplingers, Food and Wine, Garden and Greenhouse for reading material.

Xfinity bundled TV, phone (local and long distance), high speed internet services.  We pay $165 a month for the bundle.  Seems high to me but we used to pay a lot more at the old house.

Garden and Greenhouse I get for free.  I either pay a buck an issue or trade mastercard points for most of the rest.  Cooks Illustrated is the only one we pay full price for.

The TV is the only area where I don't feel like I get my money's worth, but DH and DD watch a lot so ok, I guess?

bobosensei, I def like the Dorco blades. I use the ones with 4 blades, but even at 6$ a month (not bad) that's a new cartridge every week - way too much for me.  I can get 10 of the  same blades right now on amazon for $18

Regarding shaving cream, I also switched to cremo cream from regular foam cream. What a difference! And 1 tube (<10 at CVS) lasts me for months.

To get back on topic:

I have a bunch of little subscriptions that add up, but I budget for them. I can't imagine "forgetting" about so many - sure one or two maybe, but that couple in the article is pretty ridiculous.

I also have some yearly things (gym, small fee for ad free email, etc) that I "budget monthly" but don't worry about the actually dollars. I just know I'm accounting for those expenses eventually.
