Okay, this is what no nap gets me--crying and carrying on because he moved his pillow and can't put it back. I flop it back to where it was and he cries harder because "that's not how it was". WTF?? This is a new one. The other day, his chair at the table wasn't in the exact right spot. He's perfectly fine with stuff like this normally. A little tired, and he turns into a little monster. I hate that. Like crap if I'd just gotten you to bed by now, life would be good.

I fully support no napping in school. I am sending them for an education not to watch them while they lay there awake. Kindergarten is only 4-6 hours, so even a "whole" day is not that long. What I do have a problem with is how ridiculously early it starts. The bell rings at 7:45, bus picks up at 7:15, which means they have to get up by 6:30 in order to have time to get dressed and eat breakfast. That means they have to go to bed at 7ish and I don't know any kid that doesn't fight a super early bedtime. which means not enough night time sleep and they get tired/cranky so they need naps!

Well you know one now. My kids have slept past 6am maybe twice in their lives and by past 6 am, I'm talking until 6:15 whoopdie doooooo. My 5 year old comes into our room on the weekends at 6am on the dot dressed (we tell him he can't leave his room before 6) and ready with a full monologue. Neither of them fight going to be at 7pm.

No, we don't walk away. But when we're holding on to something precious, we run.

K4 and K5 at our school start at the same time the rest of the school starts - 845. The bus would be picking up the kids around 0815 except we can't flex our work schedules enough to make putting the kids on the bus work for us. So I wake them up around 600 and then I'm out the door around 615 so I can pick them up after school at 315. Their dad drops them off at school around 715 for the before school program. Previously, he was dropping them off at his Mom's and she'd run them up to school in time for the bell.
They still fight bedtime.

Okay, here's the update. The first day was okay. Got there just in the nick of time, as my younger son wasn't feeling very cooperative. I wanted to drop him off first, so that I wouldn't have to get him out and back in the carseat and deal with a 2 year old there at the school. There was nowhere to park, as it was a madhouse, which is why DS missed the line up outside, but we just went inside and I brought the kindermat and a few donations. DS1 liked the hot lunch, except the broccoli, and the mac & cheese was too sticky. But he had chocolate milk, which was great! (I don't buy that--he gets plenty of sugar in his yogurt and snack. He doesn't need more.) Now DS2 wants me to buy chocolate milk. I had to take my mom the the Dr in the afternoon, so his sitter picked him up from school. He was pretty wired last night. Lot's of exciting new things for him, I guess. Mid-morning, I went over to the office to discuss the busing situation. This is the thing that has been niggling in the back of my mind. (Did I use that word right? Seems to fit.) I think it's what has been the source of my anxiety over the whole school situation. We're being treated like 2nd class citizens due to being schools of choice--despite the fact we do reside in the same district, just not in the area of that elementary school. They won't adjust their bus stops to take him to the sitter after school, since we aren't that important to them, I guess. I can call the person in charge of busing and plead my case. I used to go to high school with/be in marching band with/work with one of the people on the school board. I'll give him a call if I don't get anywhere, if just to express my displeasure with the whole situation. My sitter lives on the main road, and both the school's buses pass right by it on their routes. This road has a 45 mph speed limit. There is a stop about 2/3 of a mile down the road, and one across the road and around the corner. We all agree neither of those is happening for a 5 yo. Why they can't do a quick stop where they used to, 2 houses away from my sitter's, is beyond me. They would stop there if we lived in the area. We don't count to them, even though I'm paying the same school taxes that everyone else in the district pays. The convenience of the bus/sitter situation was the reason we went there instead of the private school he attended last year or the charter school of the arts that I find really appealing. If I thought it wouldn't be too disruptive to DS, I would pull him out and put him in that private school right now, but it would be too weird for him, so I won't.

Sorry for all the trouble, hope you get things resolved. Sounds like he had a good day though!

Thanks. I hope so too. It's really making me upset. DS seems to like school a lot, but this morning he asked if he was going again today. I think the fun of the newness is wearing off.
