I wish teachers could still focus on those things. Now K has to write.

All right. I suppose I should teach my 5 yo how to tie his shoes. Except, he doesn't have any shoes with laces to tie...maybe his leather boots have some laces.

I couldn't tie my shoes until I was in middle school... I also have a genius IQ and a decent paying job... I don't think tying your shoes is indicative of later in life performance

I am LOL at all of these. I had a coworker who's husband called her at work to ask her what the phone number for 911 was. She told him that it better be a head injury. When I first started one of my employers, the boss made a production of giving me the phone number of the local police department and suggested I study the card carefully to memorize the number and keep it handy in case an emergency happened. He seemed a bit nonplussed when I asked if it was OK if I just called 911 if an emergency happened.

I don't think tying your shoes is indicative of later in life performance Thank God because my 7th grader still sucks at tying his shoes and he also has a genius IQ. I am up more nights that I care to mention worrying about him never getting a good job and moving out. My college age DD on the other hand is perfectly capable of being on her own yet she acts like a 2 yer old with money in her pocket to spend. What she spends it on is anyone's guess and I seriously doubt she even knows. If she doesn't stop acting like she is rich, or we are, it will literally be the death of her soon.

Okay, I'm terrible with street names and use landmarks. One of the things the kids used to learn in school was how to find your way home. Even if you took the bus, how to navigate from classroom to correct bus, you get it. Well both DS and DD said you go down the hall, out the door, to crossing guard, then follow the crowd to next crossing guard, then past the church, past the fire station, past the rec center, turn right at the rec center and come down the street to our house. Knew zero street names but knew how to get home. My son still knows how to get around on back roads all around Tampa because, like me, he hates main roads. We just said they couldn't do certain things until they were certain ages. We told DS he couldn't ride a bike until he was 5, couldn't use a knife until he was 6. So by that time he was anxiously awaiting his "time" therefore very little trouble with either one. Self confidence is supreme in a lot of these tasks. DD coming up behind was more anxious to get started and it was harder keeping her waiting but she, too, had very little trouble. In fact she was easy to potty train because she wanted out of her crib and into the twin bed in her room. Told her only "big girls" slept in real beds. That and to not get her Little Mermaid underwear dirty. Easy peasy with very few mistakes.

Aw, I knew we were somehow related. I do the same thing. Not all that good with street names, but I have landmarks, billboards, even the location of certain kinds of trees, etc. glued into my brain. I can get you to my house using those things, but I have to use Mr. Google if you want those pesky things like street names.

Amongst the speeches GW got as she headed out into the big wide world was being informed that all the little elves that have been taking care of stuff for her all her life died. She will be taking care of all that crap now. I've gotten a couple of texts saying she didn't realise how much those little buggers did.

BTW I kinda get the college address question. Do kids get mail in dorms? Are they supposed to give their parents address as their permanent address? GW has an apartment so it didn't come up for us.

The schools have an address that is listed every where that they can google vut can't get mail to them with it. They have to have the address for their college version of a PO box. Most colleges we visited say you get to keep it for all of your years there. There normally is a different address for getting packages delivered also since some places won't deliver to a PO box. I can't remember when DD got it but I think she had to look pretty good the emails to find it. Now it is listed on things like our Amazon account so she can get stuff mailed to her at college. But the short answer is no you can't just Google to get their personal mail address on campus.

On one hand, I am admittedly happy that he still needs me. On the other hand, I am absolutely certain without a doubt that there was someone -- his roommate, his RA, a hallmate -- within 25 feet of him he could have asked. I mean, they actually live there, too, so would/should know the address. He could have gotten the answer without leaving his chair or getting off of his bed. If he had just yelled it out, the answer would have been yelled right back at him.

Yesterday we were driving home from vacation when the car began making horrid noises. DH got off the thruway and called AAA on my only-used-for-emergencies phone. I got out of the car, trying to figure out where we were. The signs just listed route numbers, and we were in a chain gas station lot, not terribly unique. This was apparently not good enough for finding the address thru Mr Google for AAA, either. Luckily the employees were on a smoke break chatting with locals, and could give DH a "real address". Of course, then AAA wanted to know the phone number he was calling from. Did I mention this phone is only used in emergencies, thus I had no idea of the number? DH's like, "Um, do you have caller id?"

I find my self disoriented regularly - you often can not see any physical buildings or landmarks to identify where you are. I think this is going to be the case more and more that people have no ideal where they are if they break down.

Whew!! Got the direction thing covered with ODS. He was a total Geography geek when he was younger. I have more atlases and maps than most people have bottles of beer and wine in their homes. Not only can he give street-by-street directions, he will include landmarks, AND share some interesting facts of the locale along the way.

Personally, I'm both. I know street names and I know the landmarks. I can give directions in either language. I can't stand just staring at the car in front of me so I do read signs and such and notice things as I go. DH couldn't use a landmark to save his life, but since he also doesn't read signs.......... Well, let's just say I gave up giving him directions ages ago.

I'm a landmark driver. AND, very thankful that Dad taught me how to read a map. I bought a new vehicle, & OnStar failed to answer twice when I was on DD's road trip to & from her internship, sooo, when my "free" OnStar service ended, I didn't renew. If they don't answer, & I can find where I'm going with a map, then I don't need their service.

We'd been camping for a long weekend, and left most electronics at home, too. We were about 100 miles from home, and hadn't planned to get off the thruway there at all, so didn't know local street names. We are also used to using route numbers at home, since the street "names" of major roads change every time you cross a town border,,it's just easier to say take 31 east, rather than try to remember if it is called Maple Ridge Rd, or Telegraph Rd, or East Ave, or Main St...depending on the section.

When DD was in her 3rd year of college. She called me and said her car was broke down and she was at a bank. Her cell phone battery was dead (of course) and could I call her boyfriend of and have her pick her up at the bank. I called BF and he asked why DD didn't just call him directly and I told him that despite the fact that they have been dating 3 years that she did not know his phone number, just had it programmed in her phone. When she had her car towed to the garage, they looked at it and told her that sometimes "older cars have trouble with the fuel pump when the gas tank gets low" and did not charge her. So basically was just a polite way of telling her she RAN OUT OF GAS!
DS in his first semester of college was supposed to get a refund check from his financial aid, a couple thousand dollar check. He was too late signing up for direct deposit. So he called me and said that he got a letter saying there was a check but he did not see a check. I asked if the check was attached to the bottom he said no. So I told him to bring to the financial aid office and ask them about it. He later said he had the check so I had to ask him how he got it and he admitted "It was in the envelope" DUH.
Same DS called and said he was having trouble in his Fitness Walking Class, the tests were SOOO HARD. But advanced calculus was no problem.
