Here's another POSSIBLE senario. What if the father planned on using the debit card and the card was declined because of insufficient funds without the father's knowlege? About a week ago there were many people in a small Iowa community that had their debit card information stolen with charges made to their account in other states. The source is believed to be Wal-Mart even though Wal-Mart states they're equipment works fine. Some people didn't know they were a victim until their bank called to find out if they truly spent $500 in a Texas Target. One victim was a coworker of mine that didn't live in that town, but had visited the town for work purposes. She used her debit card on Thursday to get gas and it was declined. When she called her bank she learned that over $1k had been charged on her account. Luckily she was able to use a credit card she had with her and the bank took care of the rest.

Thieves can't use my credit card information to drain my bank account. While the mess can be cleaned up, it's a lot more inconvenient than just ordering a new credit card.

Well, I typically have several credit cards in my wallet, but only one debit card. I guess if worst came to worst, I'd call family or friends to come and "bail" me out.

I am not sure of all the details, no I am not sure exactly how it went down.
It just they were singing one minute to the loud voice, screaming from the father, the daughters crying and the cops being called.
I just really felt bad for the birthday girl (she was I am guessing between 12-14 not sure)
Also I did not feel that the cops were warranted but I understand how they might felt they had too (the father raising his voice and cursing, etc).
But it did make for an uncomfortable moment for all of us dinners.

Yeah, since it escalated to anger I'm guessing it was a planned thing. They were trying to scam and making a scene was probably part of it.
Yuck on Red Lobster. The last time we went there I was floored at how expensive it was and then our waiter was higher than a kite and couldn't form actual words with his mouth. I asked for another waiter. We never went back. If we are going to spend that kind of cake we can go to somewhere a lot nicer.

Fortunately, the one here in our suburb has a great wait staff and a good kitchen and we have rarely been disappointed. Yes, it's more expensive than McDonald's and Applebee's, but we know that going in. (BTW, my love of crab is one reason I've selected the avatar I have.)

...:::"Maybe the guy didn't realize that he didn't have enough money.":::...
Hehhehe, maybe he had exactly $150, and knew the meal would cost $125. He stopped at a gas station to buy $10 worth of gas, unaware that the gas station put a $75 hold. Now he is in a difficult situation because he "has" the money -- he knows he has the money, but he can't prove it.
OK so we don't know what "didn't have enough money to pay" means. Maybe the dude got pickpocketed on the way in. Or maybe he had malicious intent from the get go.
...:::"But for some reason, this idiot felt the need to let things escalate to screaming and crying.":::...
This could have been a strategy. Screaming/crying kids are disturbing to others. Maybe he hoped that the restaurant would rush them out, bill be damned.
...:::"it is likely the customer was the one who escalated the incident to the point of needing the police...":::...
In line with the "avoiding lawsuits" mentality, it is possible that company policy is to go STRAIGHT to the police. Maybe the guy is one of those slick pros who knows all the ins and outs of customer rights laws cold, and was baiting the restaurant to make a mistake so that he could get off on a technicality? Its not unheard of for a wrongdoer to exploit a legal loophole and avoid consequences.

Back when I was a waitron, we had this happen from time to time. Crying screaming threats, a claim that they "forgot" their wallet or whatever. A few key things which always made it easy to spot a scammer:
1. As others have mentioned, the make a public spectacle rather than being discreet. 2. They never offer even a partial payment. We'd be a lot more sympathetic if the bill came to $32 but they only had $30 on them. 3. They usually miraculously "found" a credit card when we threatened to call the cops. 4. If they did wait around for the cops, the cops usually knew them and had talked to them about this issue before!
At least these guys aren't as pathetic as people who would doctor their food so they could complain and get the bill comped by the manager.

I've been in a position like bobosensei - I use Discover as my primary card and there are a handful of places that don't accept it. My feeling is that if you primarily use Discover or AMEX, you should either be prepared with a backup VISA/MasterCard or alternative form of payment, unless you KNOW that the place you're going to accepts them.

My personal favorite is anti-theft devices at the public library. Imagine stealing what you can use whenever you want with no restrictions? A lot of people can't use library cards to borrow material. They've taken stuff out and never returned it; it was returned damaged and they haven't made arrangements to pay for it or they returned it very late and haven't made arrangements to pay the overdue fine. Or they have address issues - the address on file is incorrect and they can't/won't provide a current/correct one.

I watched a table order an $8 appetizer after talking extensively with the waiter about the food and hte price (which was also listed on the menu). Ate it all, ate their meals and then when the bill came thru a HUGE fit claiming they had no idea that appetizer was $8 and they didn't even like it and they should not be charged. If you didn't like it that much why was the plate licked clean when the waiter took it back to the dish room? I couldn't believe the audacity of some people, but it worked because the manager gave it to them for free to get them to leave quietly.
