At the end of "The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy", Slartibartfast (the Magrathean designer of planets, played by Bill Nighy) makes the following statement ending with a question:
So... my question, and reason for the thread: If YOU were asked this question... what would your answer be? What could the Earth do without?

My answer is bedbugs, roaches and termites... and viruses and bacteria.
We could definitely "do without" them!

Fleas, mosquitoes and ticks. Can't see a use for any of 'em.

Funny. It reminds me first of, "What do you get if you multiply six by nine?"
Tell me, do you think there is something fundamentally wrong with the universe?

My answer is bedbugs, roaches and termites... and viruses and bacteria. We could definitely "do without" them! Without nitrogen-fixing bacteria changing atmospheric nitrogen into fixed nitrogen to be used by plant life, we'd all be dead. Be careful what you wish for.

Fleas, mosquitoes and ticks. Can't see a use for any of 'em. Nutritious meals for bats and birds. It's not exactly mosquitoes au gratin avec vin, but they seem to like it.

Admittedly, I should have been clearer on my bacteria and viruses mention... just get rid of the BAD bacteria, like the ones that cause infections and sickness. (I noticed you didn't have a problem with my suggestion of getting rid of bedbugs though! LOL)

Tell me, do you think there is something fundamentally wrong with the universe? Since 6x9=54... I wonder why it reminds you of that...

I'd be willing, however, to accede to more fruit flies in exchange for fewer mosquitoes and more mealy bugs in exchange for fewer fleas and ticks. I'm willing to compromise!

I'd want to rid the world of violence - no wars, no shootings, stabbings, rapes or fist fights, etc But, I don't think that was what was meant by the question. So I will second mosquitoes. bedbugs and roaches and add mice.

The building I used to work in had 2 stories. The architect took an elevator from a skyscraper and built it into the design. You had to push 42 to get to the second floor. I always thought that was cool.

Risking the slippery slope of derailing this thread, I'd say religion. seriously. Otherwise though - bedbugs, absolutely. They can go. also agree with Happy about violence.

Noooooooooooooooooooooo...
They make healthful tea, OK wine, and the leaves are great for your liver. Plus picky lizards will sometimes eat dandelion flowers when they are refusing their veggies.

Women with A cups. So pointless. Male nipples, same reason. ETA - Not saying I want to get rid of the women, just enlarge their nonexistent breasts. Oh, also the letter C. It kould be replaced entirely by K or S where appropriate. What if those women you find so worthless because they don't meet your standards of physical perfection are quite happy with themselves the way they are? Would you force them to undergo unwanted surgical procedures?
If you don't like the way they look, don't look at them.
What if someone told your daughters they had no value because their personal endowments didn't meet some random person's standards?

I never said they were worthless as people, I said A cups are pointless as breasts. The same way a 2 inch penis would be pretty pointless. And no, they wouldn't have to undergo surgery. At the end of the movie they're talking about remaking Earth, but with a couple minor changes. If they put that change in then women that are happy with A cups wouldn't exist, because A cups wouldn't have ever existed in the first place. So those women would not exist because, based on the fact that they do not fulfill your fantasies, they have no value.

It kould be replaced entirely by K or S where appropriate. Huh. I think its cool there are various sizes of women's breasts although around D to G I think its rather hard and mean to the woman who carries them generally. ( I know Dolly Parton and various porn actresses have turned their assets to $$$, but it costs $$$$$ it seems for reductions. for the latter, for those who want one and can not afford one...)
Personally I like male nipples. Fun to play with.
