The recession caused my city to cut back on police and eliminate foot patrols. Both have contributed to an increased crime rate, including armed robberies.

This is just recent numbers, (rise from 39 to 41.3 million from beg of 2010 to Sept 2010), but the article indicates its a 15 year high for poverty/ poverty programs... "One indirect sign of continuing hardship is the rise in food stamp recipients, who now include nearly one in seven adults and an even greater share of the nation’s children. While other factors as well as declining incomes have driven the rise, by mid-2010 the number of recipients had reached 41.3 million, compared with 39 million at the beginning of the year. Just antedotal rhetoric here. Like black comedy really.
I'm sorry that it has happend to you. We have also had to reduce on services, including fire and police. But crime is not up yet. At leasst not violent crime. I am in a "free carry" state. No license required. I does make a difference when the would be attacker is not sure about his intanded victim's ability to fight back.
And some people are trying to get an "armed citizen" training program started. Mostly for women and the elderly, just in case. So far it is onkly getting a lukewarm recdeption. Some people are understandably against it. I can't fsthom why because it is intended to be all voluntary, and set up on a pay-as-you-go basis for participants.

Bless you, and I expect you already know what the terms "situational awareness" and "swivel neck" mean.

Just out of curosity I checked the debt clock again. Since my earlier numbers the population has, (supposedly), grown by 34 people, but the number of food stamp recipients has grown by 77.
Acording to that, we are moving backwards in the government dependency category.

Do you think the past few years have set a new normal? Henry. Or do you acknowledge that there has been a significant increase in those numbers due to recession/economic downturn... ?

I have no idea, and if had one, would you accept it on its merits?
I'd ask Batman, but he's out checking on the contain and control effort over the untermenshen that he has heard are causing such problems for the community.
As to the question, I can get Batman to do some research for me and get back to you, but only if it's going to be accepted as an honest effort. I really don't need any sandbags of canned hyperbole.
Your call.

Honey... i posted a link above that showed Sept 2010 was the highest rate of poverty and food stamps in 15 years... and said that even in the time from Jan-Sept 2010, just a small part of that, the # of food stamp recipients grew by 2.3 million...
