What I mean by that is do you believe what you believe because of how it affects you personally and if you situation changes, so will your politics; or do you actually believe what you stand for and that pretty much remains the same regardless of what is going on in your life?

"I vote with my wallet!" is not an answer to the question; "Are you[r] political beliefs out of convenience?" Voting your wallet may be based on political beliefs or convenience alternatively. How one votes does not necessarily reflect ones political beliefs. I suspect that a lot of people who believe in independence and States Rights vote for the person who promises to deliver the most benefits. It's easy to believe something and behave differently. That's sometimes called hypocrisy, but I don't know if that fully explains it. I'm reminded of the character of Joy's mother [Brett Butler] retorting to being confronted with her behavior, "Don't you judge me!" [My Name is Earl] Sometimes people are simply not self reflective enough to know for sure what they believe so they aren't consciously hypocritical, even if their actions don't reflect their claimed beliefs. Particularly, some people react primarily to emotion rather than to reason or logic and even work really hard convincing themselves that their emotions are logical and reasonable [flip a coin]. I try to keep my political beliefs consistent with my basic personal philosophy, but I don't always behave according to my personal philosophy even in my non-political affairs so............to some degree, everything is political and most of us try to make as few waves as possible........convenience is sometimes a priority when I'm trying to "just get along." But I do try to measure my vote and political support against what I believe.

I think we all evolve. I try to maintain consistency between my beliefs and my actions, regardless of what is convenient.

Generally speaking that is the key to good mental health, but there's never a one to one relationship between conscience and action. That's why we have to have police and armies.

Well safe... sometimes peoples actions are consistent with their beliefs... they just aren't beliefs the majority hold as moral and ethical... doesn't mean the criminal isn't being consistent with his own beliefs...
I agree though... you can tell when your beliefs and actions are out of sinc... cause that's when you have trouble sleeping and bad dreams when you do... or at least me...
I think sometimes people think they are against something, and they support an 'idea' which seems consistent, but in reality, the actions which go along with that idea do not bring about their intended goal... Or they are for small government and indivdiual freedom... and vote that way, but still like their SS and Medi and access and food stamps etc... which means they actually vote AGAINST their self interests, and seemingly with their beliefs, but i'm not sure they always realize what they are actually doing...

What I mean by that is do you believe what you believe because of how it affects you personally and if you situation changes, so will your politics; or do you actually believe what you stand for and that pretty much remains the same regardless of what is going on in your life? When you go to the polls to vote, do you vote the party line or do you vote for the candidate who best serves your interests? If your political party advises to vote no on a referendum, but you believe it would benefits you and your fellow citizens to vote yes, do you still vote no? Is voting no (or yes) in your best interests? I would think ones political beliefs would be somewhat fluid based upon the candidates and issue(s) at hand. You still have your own core values but not every candidate or issue up for vote is going to perfectly match your core values. I am a registered democrat but I often vote for republican candidates. I vote for what is best for me and my community. We play the hand we have been dealt at election time.

I just don't think any one candidate, or party for that matter, is likely to line up with all of someone's beliefs... so the party affiliation of a specific candidate or referendum might better mesh with your beliefs ... or less... and you vote for the person who best fits those beliefs...

No. My political beliefs are not in my best interest-- "they" say. Not about to change them, though, to conform to what others think is in my best interests.................... Right is right, and wrong is wrong.............. sometimes there is a gray zone in there. I like the gray zone, but, if put on the spot-- I know where I stand. Hate like hell being put there, would rather not go there... but it is what it is. My best interest would put me on welfare and the equivalent. Not happening. I would rather fight.

I vote for the person/party that I believe would best serve my grandchildren's future. If that hurts my wallet in the short term, so be it.
I hate the "what's in it for ME"? attitude.

Are you one who would receive aid but not stop looking for work? One who would so all the could get to the point where you could stand on your own feet and be able to say to those giving you the aid,: thank you, I appreciated it, really needed it , but I am able to stand on my two feet now, found a job, I don't need it any longer, again, thank you very much, good bye, I hope I won't have to call you again. If so, then if you qualified for help, not to take it, while it sounds noble, to me is not. By taking assistance when needed , keeps your strength up so you can do a "good fight". Some times it's not the person, it's the times. So many very , very good , strong people are receiving aid to day, some one put up I thought, over 40 % of the populace are on some kind of aid, food stamps I believe. You get to that point in the country, it's not the people any longer, it's the times, not even the parties, to high for that kind of aid to be given. To me, if your eligible, not to take the aid if eligible .... well, nough said.

No krickitt, your best interest would be a way to provide for yourself, a decent income, enough money to put some away for retirement, etc. There was a time when all of that was possible for most people. That was pre Reagan. It is no longer that way. : (

My beliefs are what I live by & they rarely change. They certainly wouldn't change because of something either benefiting me or affecting me negatively. For instance I don't believe that you would receive any form of help from the government unless you absolutely must have it (we qualified for 10 years). My ex signed my kids up for free lunch once & that lasted about 4 days until I found out about it (I didn't often put my foot down with her because she made my life hell when I did). She like many others just looked at it like something "free" that we should take because it was there. We didn't "need" it so we didn't "get" it.

As long as you fed your kids tex, that's no problem. Its like me not applying for SSI for daughter because we didn't need it. But if she DID need something i couldn't provide, i think it would have been my responsibility to get the aide and provide it for her... just like i would not want a person's pride to interfere with their child being fed. A child cannot learn if he is hungry...
Also. I am not a fan of people who say 'they worked two minimum wage jobs and put themselves through school in 8 years because they didn't want to accept aide".... I'm more a fan of take two years of aide and get yourself a good job and start paying taxes... i think that's more benefitical to us all than having you struggle for 8 years not paying any taxes...

I give you credit for being honest and true to your beliefs Krickett I'll be honest now also, and say that we have been eligible for Earned Income Credit (EIC) until two years ago, and we've taken it every time. It's "free money" so what the heck do you expect anyway? I know there is more to your story Krickett, but if there is a way we can help could you please let us know? You never know, maybe one of the posters here lives near you and can offer a job or something. Ratchets, it is more then "free money," , its there to help working families who are doing all they can to help themselves but becuse of what ever are not earning enough to be able to support themselves to the minimum standards that are thought a minimum for working people. ------------------------------------------------- " The EITC is the largest poverty reduction program in the United States. Almost 21 million American families received more than $36 billion in refunds through the EITC in 2004. These EITC dollars had a significant impact on the lives and communities of the nation's lowest paid working people, lifting more than 5 million of these families above the federal poverty line.[citation needed] Further, economists suggest that every increased dollar received by low and moderate-income families has a multiplier effect of between 1.5 to 2 times the original amount, in terms of its impact on the local economy and how much money is spent in and around the communities where these families live. Using the conservative estimate that for every $1 in EITC funds received, $1.50 ends up being spent locally, would mean that low income neighborhoods are effectively gaining as much as $18.4 billion.[citation needed] --------------------------------------------------------- We are not the only country that has this type of program, there are many who offer similer programs, it isn't a "American ? thing.

No. My beliefs have caused issues over the years, and taking another path would have been easier, but after soul searching and serious thought, I held steadfast. In the end, beliefs are one of the few things that can't be taken away from us.

The funny thing about morality and beliefs is that they only really matter when you actually need to use them. Otherwise what difference does it make? Not sure what you mean, but I think I disagree.

i struggle with the term "political beliefs" these days...i know where my personal beliefs are and they will not change out of convenience...they would align me more on the right politically but i have pretty much lost faith in all politicians...there are some, on a local level, where their intentions are pure but on a national level i fear where this is leading our country...
i don't trust any washington politician, their stated agenda's, campaign promises etc. no matter which side of the aisle they stand...personal gain, power and special interest groups are the rule rather than the exception...
it's sad when you really think about it...
