Isn't it amazing how the world can pull together when there's a real disaster to deal with? I'm sure more countries will sign on as the real extent of need is realized.

Search and rescue teams from 45 countries are said to be ready to help. The first to arrive in Japan will be from the US, Australia, New Zealand and South Korea, the UN says. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-12709694

It's been reported that the Earth's crust over in Japan has torn open a large hole in the Earth. 150 miles in length X 50 miles wide. Something bigger is on it's way. California, here I come.

5 reactors are "in trouble."
More than 1,000 feared dead in Japan's northeast — most from the tsunami that followed

5 reactors are "in trouble." Me thinks the reactors are just reacting. It is the Japanese people in trouble. Anyone for more nuclear reactors here?

Labeled as most likely the worst natural disaster in history it will have many effects all around the globe. So sad to see such a calamity on the Japaneese people. The impact on their struggling economy and loss of life will be years for the country to recover. Much of the low farm land will be useless for some time due to salt water intrusion. The transportation systems that move 10 million people a day will take a decade to rebuild. For them the world has changed forever.

The Japanese are in a great deal of trouble. The destruction and devastation are horrific.

Explosion at nuke plant 100 miles from Tokyo. People being giving iodine tablets.. guess that is treatment for radiation??? Geez, what a nightmare, and not over yet. Now the entire global economy will meltdown, right, as Japan is such a huge economy? The Nostradamus and other end of the world people must be freaking out. It's enough to make me freak out, and I am not an end of the world type.

I am so sad for these victims. I usually donate to the red cross when disasters happen. Is that the best way to send help? Any other ideas?

You're welcome, hon. I think all of us are feeling a bit helpless right now, and would like to do something to help those poor people!

sweet-- is this freaking you out as much as me? we all know MSM does not tell the whole truth, and even what they ARE telling is really scary. I feel so sorry for those people. Sorry for what is sure to be many typos on here. I usually don't even use spell check, and this is weird. My hard drive fried-- no idea why-- am using a kid's friend's laptop. Very different than a PC.

For real???!!! I hadn't heard this. Living in CA, this causes me concern. Predicting earthquakes is an "iffy" business, at best, lonewolf. It's difficult to predict exactly where one will hit, and even more difficult to predict how strong it will be. "The Big One" has been being predicted for California for years, and years, and years. Someday, those predictions might come true, but nobody knows for sure.

Oh, man-- now a RED ALERT reported from another nuke plant. This is horrible, just horrible. shit-- how safe are we when these nuke plants go bad? Seriously. I don't know much about energy, but I hear coal is babbadbad, being screwed to death, oil is badbadbad, being screwed to the wall. Where does this nuke shit fit in?? Is this one of the future "goods" we hear so much about?? Bet those millions in the meltdown area wish they were using anything except nuke power..................... s we hear so much about? "

If I offend anyone on this board, too bad. How anyone can see these images and believe we shouldn't send help - just remember, karma is a b1tch.

Heh. I'm with you, marjar. There will always be those who choose to be offended, just as there will always be those who are more concerned with themselves than with anything else. This disaster has impacted the Japanese people in a terrible way, and that matters to me. If someone wants to be offended, s'okay wit' me! ;D

5 reactors are "in trouble." Me thinks the reactors are just reacting. It is the Japanese people in trouble. Anyone for more nuclear reactors here? Yes, I am. There are vast regions of this country where earthquakes are highly unlikely.

It is scary. How have you been? Hope well

I did some reading and actually, according to some experts, the northern part of CA and parts of the Pacific Northwest may be at greater odds of the big one.

I'm fair, sweet. Still out of work and relying mainly on the kids. Say mainly because I am free daycare for my GBs, and that is a small fortune-- if you choose to see it as such. Far better off than those people in Japan , though.

<<I think they said 8.9 is strongest on record...>>
It is for Japan.
<<I've read some theories on climate change and earthquake volcano increases... mostly stuff like as glaciers melt, they allow the plates to rebound differently, and change stress on faults, apparently there is some historical evidence that as ice caps melted, earthquakes increased.>>
Different type of quake, not caused by shifting plates. It's know as the "Elastic Rebound Theory". The line of thought is that the weight of the ice sheets compresses the soil, which can then "spring back" and cause quakes in areas where no fault lines exist. It is not widely accepted, or at least it wasn't when I was a geology major.
