This was triggered by a huge-- 8.9-- quake in Japan. Just saw that the waves that hit Hawaii were smaller than expected- hopefully that bodes well for our west coast this morning.

Tsunami footage from Japan...300 bodies found so far
I saw the same footage on the news this morning. That is all farmland.

This is really devastating to Japan. They're being hit by aftershocks one right after the other, and most of magnitude 5.0 and above. That's certainly nothing to sneeze at. The destruction is widespread, with fires, flooding, a refinery burning, and possible damage to a nuclear reactor. It's bloody scary!

www.clarionledger.com/article/20110311/NEWS03/110311010/1263/rssI think Obama is quicker to help other countries than our own. Are we ever going to get a president that focuses on America more. Does Japan ever offer aid when we have droughts or floods? Again thinking we are the champions of the world, the hubris of these newer presidents is just ridiculous(I mean Bush too).

Japan has asked for our help and we have a huge Naval presence in Japan with our fleet ....@40k Marines and Sailors who are more than willing and able to help the people in Japan......BTW Marines are treated just awesome by the Japanese which came as a complete surprise to me because of our history in WW2
If you check out the photos of the complete devastation in Japan you will better understand why Obama wants to do all he can to help the Japanese and I applaud him for that

Thanks Bills for posting a link that backs up my post. Even though it is a blog, the link just proves that Japan is used to these types of events. They should be well prepared to handle their own situation without help from our tax payers that are already hurting from the economic recession.

Japan was just hit again-- a 6.6 quake in central Japan that caused buildings in Tokyo to sway.

Yeah, I am not sure if it is climate change or just a lot more extensive media but it seems like our natural disasters the past 7 years have been getting more frequent. Tsunami's, earthquakes, droughts, huge snow storms and Hurricanes. Does anybody else notice the increase or is it the media?

I'm not sure what effect climate change would have on earthquakes? I seem to remember awhile back reading a story about the perceived increase in natural disasters being just that- a perceived increase.

The massive earthquake that struck off the coast of Japan Friday was the strongest quake in the area in nearly 1,200 year, David Applegate, a senior science adviser for earthquake and geologic hazards for the U.S. Geological Survey, told the AP. He said the 8.9-magnitude quake ruptured a patch of the earth's crust 150 miles long and 50 miles across.

I have lived through two major earthquakes out here that were 6.5 and cannot imagine how 8.9 would be since it lasted for @ 5 minutes....believe me 6.5 is tough to take if you are in a building with the roof falling down on you... I was on a rifle range during the first earthquake and could not understand why the ground and targets were moving so much in a rolling motions until someone yelled "we are having an earthquake"..

6.6 magnitude has struck off the coast of Akita in northwestern Japan. Most of the quakes have been to the northeastern side, but there have been two over 6 in magnitude in the last few hours.

Three morons in Crescent City CA got swept out to sea while taking pictures. Two managed to swim back, the other is still missing.

I experienced one 3.4 quake that lasted 30 seconds. It was enough to cause some china to tumble and pictures were left hanging askew. I can't imagine experiencing what you have, nor what the people of Japan are going through.

One morning when in college, I was badly hung over and thought I had almost passed out attempting to stand upright in the bathroom. When I came out, my girlfriend asked if I had felt the earthquake.

Another one I went through when stationed on Guam in the 70's, I was in a top floor bar of a hotel on a beach (notice the reoccuring theme ). It was a small piece of beach with a cliff about the height of the hotel close by. It was sooo cool being able to tell how much the building was swaying with the fixed reference point of the cliff ( and being just drunk enough to not be able to process the risk ).

That's exactly what it feels like--a dizzy spell. I heard a lot of people say that. I've been through many quakes and have never experienced it.

I think they said 8.9 is strongest on record...
So... what impact will cuts to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the National Weather Service have?
I've read some theories on climate change and earthquake volcano increases... mostly stuff like as glaciers melt, they allow the plates to rebound differently, and change stress on faults, apparently there is some historical evidence that as ice caps melted, earthquakes increased.

It's been reported that the Earth's crust over in Japan has torn open a large hole in the Earth. 150 miles in length X 50 miles wide.
Something bigger is on it's way. California, here I come.
