I would like to quit my job and move to a Caribbean island and become a beach bum. I feel as though this a practical and realistic life goal for a variety of reasons including, but not limited to, the following:
1. I believe I can make a viable living selling shell necklaces to tourists.
2. I don't think I will have to support myself with my shell necklace operation for too terribly long as my life expectancy will no doubt be negatively impacted by my inevitable resultant alcoholism and melanoma.
See? Foolproof.

I see no reason not to do this. You can work as a tour guide or at a beach bar/restaurant to support yourself and you will still have investments.
I mean, boo! Consistently beautiful weather, how boring! And sunburn! And alcohol poisoning! And that ocean, with all the waves crashes. Blargh!

I see no reason not to do this. You can work as a tour guide or at a beach bar/restaurant to support yourself and you will still have investments. I mean, boo! Consistently beautiful weather, how boring! And sunburn! And alcohol poisoning! And that ocean, with all the waves crashes. Blargh! I'll have to get a second job to support my sunscreen purchases. That sounds hard.  |

The plan sounds plausible. A few things to think about. The natives probably have all the small niche sales tied up and would not take kindly to a main lander horning in.
Do you know anyone who lives there? That would be an in. Actual cost of living for a non-native. Will you still be happy when you get there, get settled in and simplified life begins? Your friends are how important to you? Are pizza and french fried available?
Can you check RE prices online for that island? I'm suspicious of non-American property conveyance. Hurricane activity in the past 10 or 20 years. You don't want to have your beach shack blown away with you in it.

I just remembered something I saw on the Facebook page of one of the tour companies we used (and loved) in Aruba. One of the drivers met someone on a tour, they kept in contact, fell in love, and just got married. How sweet! He's moving to Missouri. What the fuck?!

You also might be able to lure the mommies from the pregnancy thread on WIR too. There's a few of us there who could use a short, cheap vacation away from the kids and spouses. ETA - you'd have to make sure no one falls asleep in the sun for too long though. With kids crawling on them when they/we get home, sunburn can't happen. |
