We bought this TV this weekend. (For the record, I did pay less than the suggested retail price.) It is 55", curved, OLED technology.
We'll be eating cat food in retirement not because of the initial outlay for the TV, but because the TV is so good, we'll end up getting a better cable package (right now, we don't even get HD channels), buy a better game system, etc.
But, oh, how I love this TV.

If you focus on the t.v., you'll hardly notice the taste...
Actually, it's all about choices. Who's to say if a big t.v. isn't just as good as a nice vacation?

What makes the TV so exceptional? Is it screen shape or picture quality? Just curious since I don't watch TV much, what makes one TV awesomer than another (yeah, I'd be a disaster shopping for TVs). I will want to get a larger screen TV like the one you link to, just don't know much about TV technology!

It's the OLED technology. Very few companies even have it. (Most are doing 4k Ultra HD.) With OLED, each pixel is individually lit. It also has a black base, so the colors are deeper. They don't require backlighting, so they use less energy. And it has better motion capture (great for gaming). The curved screen also gives an appearance of depth, and combined with OLED allows for a lot better viewing angles (up to 170 degrees).
The new models are also all smartTVs, so it comes with a built in wireless connector, has Netflix, Roku, etc. I don't have to hook it up to some other device to access those things.
The real test is to go into a store that carries and OLED, and look at it, then turn to look at the TV next to it. You WILL notice a difference. Now, you may not care about that difference, (C didn't. I'm the one that really wanted the OLED), but you will notice it.
We considered similarly priced 4k Ultra HD models. We went to a few different stores and talked to people at each of the stores. All of the people we talked to said that if they only had one tv, it would be the OLED. (And remember, we were asking about OLED compared to similarly priced other models, so this wasn't a commission difference.)
In the end, the pictures on the OLED screen just look better. And since, for me, a TV is all about how good the picture on it looks, that is a selling point.
I will also mention that I expect my TVs to last 10+ years. We bought the last TV when we bought the old house (10.5 years ago), and the only reason we're getting a new one is that the old one has it's own large base and there's no where to put it in the new house. So when I buy a TV, I buy a TV for the long haul. I don't upgrade every couple of years.

You got to fill the new house with new stuff!
We'll be in the same boat once the landscape project is done. Can't use the old peeling outdoor furniture. Gotta buy new stuff!

I've had a hard time not buying new everything. Moving the old small appliances (like the blender), I really just wanted to throw them all out and buy new ones. But the only new small appliance we're getting is a new rice cooker. The one we had is much bigger than we need and was broken. The others really just need a good wipe down.
And I did bring over my w/d, because I LOVE them. I could not bring over my fridge because it's too big to get into the new house.
That does mean I now want a new fridge because the one at the house we bought is a freezer on top and OMG have I grown to love freezer on the bottom. Also, once we sell the old house, we'll want to run a gas line to the kitchen to switch out the stove (the flat top stove are TERRIBLE for cooking) and probably to the water heater, as well. I'd love to go to a tankless. (We already have gas heat, so it shouldn't be too expensive to run those lines.)

Good luck on it lasting 10+ years. I had an hdtv that wouldn't come on one day. It was five years old. I inquired about getting it repaired and was told that it wasn't worth it. The new tvs just don't last the way the old tubes did.
That was very frustrating for me. I'm used to stuff like that lasting forever, but that's just not the way things are made these days.

@southernsusana - Our last one is an HDTV. At 10+ years, it still works great. It's just a bit of a monster in a world of TVs that can hang on your wall. Our bedroom TV is also well over 5 years old (though not 10, probably 7 or 8, but I honestly don't remember when we bought it).
I'm not saying there aren't some lemons, and there aren't some with problems. Maybe I'll get unlucky this time. But we do buy high quality products from reputable manufacturers. And in this case got them to throw in a 5 year warranty at no cost to us. So I'll get at least 5 years out of it. (Which does put me at $400/year, which is a bit steeper than the $200/yr cost I'm going for, but isn't that bad.)

Cool! We will be in the market for a couple of tvs when the house is done.
Does the curve affect viewing from the sides (I.e., not sitting directly in front of or face-on to the screen)?

My husband wants one of those curved TV things. I reminded him that we cannot bring it home because 1) none of our cars is large enough to fit it in the back and 2) we do not have the wall or table space for it. Oh, and 3) I really, really, really do not want to see or hear a NASCAR race at that size. With an additional new sound system, it will sound like a speedway in the living room.

GRG a/k/a goldenrulegirl - the curve supposedly makes it better to view from an off angle. But being in the store and looking at curved tvs right next to the flat ones, the technology is so good now that they all really have 170 degree viewing angles. The curve does give a better illusion of depth to the picture.
NancysSummerSip - I promise not to tell your husband that ours was delivered to our house for free. The biggest complaint about our tv from other owners is that it's sound system is not on par with the picture quality.

Hey cook on one of those coil stoves for a couple years and a flat top will seem like manna from heaven. Can't wait till I get one!
Though gas is not an option.

justme - umm, the house we've been in for the last 10 years has a coil top stove. I can boil water on it. The flat top stove, getting a pot of water big enough to make pasta for the whole family takes 30+ minutes to bring to a boil. And then, if I want it to stay at a boil, I can't cook it uncovered. We can get around this for making pasta. But my husband can't make stock on this kind of stove, or anything that requires a long cook time at a simmer, especially if it should be uncovered to get rid of some excess water. So yeah, his anniversary gift will be running a gas line to the kitchen and a gas oven. I could probably get away with getting him a camp stove, but I'd rather just have the better oven. (And the anniversary gift to me will be the gas line to the water heater and then a tankless water heater. 12 years, that's the natural gas anniversary, right?)
And actually, I think I'll eat dog food, not cat food. I mean, I'll be buying dog food for the dogs anyway, so I'll just dish up some for myself when I make their meals.

Coils are fine. The flat top is evil. Takes forever to boil water, temperature control is awful. When I finally get it hot then the whole thing is hot. Turning it down is not automatic. By the time it cools I've probably burnt what I'm cooking. All the breading from my sesame chicken ended up stuck to the bottom of the pan the other night. Plus if your pans aren't perfectly flat on bottom it's not going to work very well.

When I get to the point of shopping the $100-$200 on special TVs, I'll let you know. I'd probably get dizzy because I'd want to take it home and could not afford to. In these cases, I try to sit and get food/nourishment immediately. It makes the lust of material things more bearable and me hydrated, or at least on a chocolate/food high.

OLED has the best blacks in the industry (especially now that plasma is no more), so the picture is awesome. I bought a new 50" plasma TV in 2013. It was far more money than I wanted to spend at the time, but I don't regret it for a minute. It's the best picture I've ever had on a television. Plus it is a smart tv, which I didn't think I wanted or needed, until I had one. Now, I'll never go back to a dumb tv. Congrats on your purchase!
