Coppertone is the only brand where the fragrances don't annoy my allergies. face/neck/ears get "faces" spf 30, everything else gets sport spray spf 15. although this year I haven't used the faces 30, I have just sprayed the 15 into my hands until I have a puddle or so, and rubbed it over my face/neck/ears. fwiw, I keep reading that the spray sunscreens are going to be discontinued in the next couple years due to concerns about the aerosols they use. they can pry my Coppertone sport out of my cold dead hands. sent from my electronic distraction Better start your hoarding. Looks like I need to check things out soon, in case I want to start my own mini-hoard.

Thyme, congrats on your hoard of awesome sunscreen BTW. You know - I wear make-up with sunscreen every day - weekends, weekdays, summer, winter. I rarely do not put on makeup. After 20 years of that, I now have a vitamin D deficiency. I know it can get absorbed by my non-face skin, but I spend the most amount of time outside in the winter - while I am wearing pants, and sleeves. I know I use to be outside a lot more, and I might have a deficiency just from my desk job - but I wonder if I abandoned the make-up with sunscreen on most days, and only used it occasionally, would I get more natural D in my system? Or would I burn and die from skin cancer?

This summer is the first time I've actually used sunscreen. I know, I know. I've bought some to use on vacations to the beach, but I always forgot to use it while I was there.
This year I bought Aveda moisturizer with sunscreen. Since I use moisturizer daily, it's easier to remember. I also bought Aveda lotion with sunscreen for my body. I forget to use that one a lot.
I bought the sunscreen because I'm outside for a couple of hours almost every day now and I figured I should probably use some. I already have some pretty interesting tan lines this season. The racerback jerseys with a keyhole cutout in the middle of the back are clearly and crisply outlined on my shoulders and back. And midthigh, there's a line where I go from a lighter brown to dark brown. I've never minded getting a tan and I've had some really dark ones before, but none so clearly defined as this one.
I've only ever had a sunburn once, 4 or 5 years ago. I worked in my yard in a tank top and a few days later, the skin on my shoulders started peeling. It never did actually hurt, but I assume it was a sunburn.

The Elta MD mentioned earlier is top notch sunscreen, very good and very expensive. I can only buy it from our dermatologist. Yes, we have a dermatologist. I have rosacea and fair skin. Anyway, I now use CeraVe face and body sunscreen lotion SPF 50. It is mineral based, and contains zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. My skin loves it. You can get at any drugstore or Walmart/Target. It is $13/$14 a tube. For the cost, I am very satisfied with it. Now if I could just get my son to use it... I buy it for him, but he won't put it on.

For the beach or other serious sun exposure, I usually lay down a morning base coat of lotion (usually Coppertone Sport) and then reapply spray (also usually Coppertone Sport) frequently throughout the day.
For day-to-day (going to walk to the grocery store, etc.), I have started preferring Neutrogena, because it's not quite as greasy and has a decent smell.

Fyi where sunscreen in concerned SPF 30 Is the way to go. The coverage difference between 30 and 50 is less than 1% but the cost is way more and more importantly, people THINK their coverage is significantly better with a 50 and therefore reapply less often.

I use a brand called Suntegrity, because 1) I have moderate MCS and many/most sunscreen chemicals make me ill, 2) it's on the Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep database as a top choice, and 3) it's readily available where I live.

I don't use sunscreen. I'm dark enough as it is. I stay out of the sun in the summer. I wouldn't burn anyway. I'd just end up being as black as my hair.
