This evening, a "leap second" threatens to wreak havoc across the Internet. The extra second will take place at 8 p.m. ET on Tuesday so that we can sync up our watches with the Earth's slowing rotation. But the 61-second minute threatens to make computer systems go haywire, potentially crashing websites and screwing up the software that powers the world's financial markets. The previous leap second, which took place in 2012, brought down Reddit, Yelp (YELP), LinkedIn (LNKD, Tech30), FourSquare, Gawker and StumbleUpon, among other sites and apps. Qantas' entire computer system went down, forcing employees to check in passengers by hand. Complete Article

You'd think they would have fixed the problem in the last three years. Then again I don't remember hearing about it last time.

LOL. Yeah, deminmaine. There are certainly roses buried in this bed of thorns. It may turn out to be nothing, justme. Some websites have, apparently, been working on a fix to avoid what happened in 2012. We'll just have to see what happens. I just figured I'd put this up here in case someone did have a problem reaching a favorite site.

I am still trying to figure out what I am going to do with my extra second. So many options, so little time.

You are right Archie! So many options so little time! So after careful consideration of WHAT can be accomplished in that second I arrived at the conclusion that there is one thing that can be done: flick a booger at a window! If it sticks then Yay! Nice shot! If it doesn't then eh! Will try it next time when we have an extra second to spare.

Only if that bugger is a real bother. Now, if it's a booger we're talking about....carry on. I'm hoping that extra second screws up the cable and gets DH out of his chair for a change.

Do you remember back 15 yrs?
The Millennium was supposed to crash all computers, banking systems, etc - cities were supposedly going to be in complete black-out - because computer systems running everything would not be able to recognize the year 2000.
People were going crazy.
When the final countdown came, it was a big nothing.

Yes I remember the Millennium. I was working as a control Engineer and could not convince my bosses that our PLC's (program logic controllers) didn't care what the date was.

I believe the article is referring to 8pm EDT, joemilitary. I could be wrong, but that's my take on it.

joemilitary The leap second hasn't been applied yet. It will be at 8 pm EDST which is 0000 GMT, the standard, and the world syncs to it.

LOL
This reminds me of Y2K...without the hysteria. I actually thought something would happen, and it obviously didn't.
Please excuse me for being possibly rude...but I thought Kim Kardashian's ample behind "broke the internet". Is it going to break again?

Not sure if I want to head to my stockpiled bunker at 6:59 PM CDST or sit it out and watch the final puzzle on Wheel of Fortune.

Can we bank it and use it if we need it at that World Cup Game tonight? A second can make a ton of difference in sports!

Im gonna try blinking at that exact time. You think my blink could screw up the internets? Probably not. But the ever so slight breeze of your eyelashes blinking could eventually affect the intensity of this year's hurricanes.

Why didn't they add the leap second to leap day? They have to add yet another random point to add a second to our clocks? SMH, but I guess I will drink to it either way

You'd think they would have fixed the problem in the last three years. Then again I don't remember hearing about it last time. Sounds like it would only be an issue for sites wanting to be up 24x7x365 and have accurate time.
