You guys make me feel guilty for spending money. YM did that, or were you predisposed to this guilt already and that's what attracted you here? I came over here from the Rich Dad boards- I think I've been here (starting there) since at least 2000?

While I was generally always pretty fiscally responsible, I didn't squirrel money away like I do now.

No, silly, aren't you catholic? Guilt has been built into your persona. You can't blame us for that.

The other less monthly bill for military to manage is health insurance costs.....
The other observation about military despite the shiny cars is a lot of stay at home spouses......sometimes due to lack of jobs in the area but a lot of stay at home spouses that don't seem to want to work......not saying that is wrong......I just think there are a lot more proportion of stay at home spouses in the military than in the real world I think it's difficult to have a meaningful career if you have to relocate for your spouse every two to three years.
Also as you climb the ladder your spouse is expected to "work" even if they don't get paid. DH had a cousin who was a general. His wife had a more than full-time unpaid job.
I agree it's hard for a spouse to have a meaningful career. It doesn't mean they can't "work" though. A general's wife is a different animal. I am talking about the lower ranking.

As you climb in the military your spouse is expected to be available to entertain, volunteer et cetera. It doesn't go from 0 to 60 when your spouse becomes a general.
My DH was in the private sector and I relocated 5 times for his career. Besides no one taking you seriously when you send long distance resumes, there's a real reluctance for an employer to invest in someone whose going to pull up stakes in three years. Believe me it gets old starting at the bottom over and over again.
When we moved to AZ the wages for my then current job were about half of what I was getting paid in the SF Bay Area. With DH's promotion, our investment income plus the cost for me to commute to downtown Phoenix, it made no financial sense for me to work outside the home. If we had children and had to pay for daycare I can see why it would be a no brainer for some people.

I will have to find it, but the number I'm going for is full time, and from start to finish. That means- working the day she got married (or he, or whatever the fuck now) until present / end of marriage. That's a rare circumstance. The number of women "currently" working, or that work part time, or that work during some period of time during the marriage- sure, I'd believe that's a lot higher than 22%.

So, I got laid off when my company got sold and they canned all the corporate positions in Phoenix. I was out of work for 3 months. Which list am I on? And what do you mean start to finish? From the day you get married until you die or divorce, whichever comes first? So, if I work for 35 years of our marriage (except those 3 months that I was laid off) and then retire, but my husband keeps working because he is a little younger than me and he has to work to a certain age to get his pension - am I now one of those people that was not employed the whole time?
