Yannow, just once it would be nice, shocking even, to have a thread where the Catholic church/Christians aren't ridiculed. Because we are all such a group of understanding, tolerable, inclusive folks - right? Well, generally, I'm finding that the loudest "Christians" are the ones that aren't really Christian. They're nasty hypocrites who are overly concerned about who is doing what in whose bed, and don't seem to be at all concerned that there are lots of kids out there with no food in their belly. To me, hungry kids is a much more important issue.

FWIW, I was ridiculing the GOP, not religion (for once).

So you use this as an excuse to mock all of them? Calling an entire group rosary rattlers is just so enlightened and really narrows down you point well. Because of course you drew the analogy with hungry kids in with the insult before I called you on it.

Self deprecating humor. I have been told I am not a Christian because I'm Catholic.

I took the "rosary rattlers" as being snarky, in response to my snark. not seriously trying to bash Catholics. I'm sorry that *my* snarky comment started something that upset you. But I do find it very ironic that the GOP is "attacking Christians" with this story about the Pope. THAT was what I was snarking on, not on Catholics. The irony of the flag bearers for the "War on Christianity" are doing exactly what they say others are doing. For all my anti-religious beliefs, this time, I wasn't being disrespectful towards religion.

It happened to a very good religious friend of mine here in Tennessee. When asked by a woman she had just met at a social function what church she attended, she named a local Catholic church. The woman replied, "Oh. So you're not Christian."

To be fair, most "Christians" aren't Christian either. I have little to no respect for the Catholic Church as an institution, both for historical and present-day actions. I will say, though, that if even half of the people (from any denomination) who claim to follow Christ (i.e. call themselves Christians) actually did, we would be tremendously better off as a society.

Yes, I understand what you're saying. But I understand even though it could have just been ignored which is what I would have done, that some people think he should stay out of it. Responding to him makes them look more ridiculous than him. I'd have laughed and thought "consider the source" when you lower yourself, you look foolish as well. As my Daddy liked to say, "Only a fool argues with another one." Why should he ignore it or stay out of it? The bible itself states that we should be good stewards of the earth. There are multiple scriptures (which I can't quote), referring to how we should take care of God's creation, which we clearly aren't doing. If it's in the Good Book, then it falls under his purview. He has every right to address it.

There have been several instances at the local religious homeschool co/op where Catholics have been disparaged as 'not really' Christians. It was my first knowledge that this is still a modern issue. I only heard of the instances second hand though, they wouldn't give me an application since I couldn't in good conscience sign their statement of Faith.
My favorite story of this ilk though is a friend who was once watching her friends children. She asked the kid if he wanted to watch a Disney movie and he told her Christisns don't watch Disney Movies. She told him, well I'm a Christisn and I do. He paused and then said, well, maybe if you were a better Christian you'd understand.

Well, my Grandparents church preached that Catholics weren't Christians so I get it that some feel this way. I lump everyone into Christian that isn't a professed member of a faith like Muslim, Judaism, Hindu, etc. or those who believe in nothing religious at all.

Well, don't Christians by definition believe that Jesus Christ is the Messiah? So I'm not sure how some factions go about spouting 'not a christian' to other groups. Although I have to say I find the 'not Christian enough' label to be a sadly common refrain.

I was told by someone that I might as well be Catholic since I was raised up in the Presbyterian church. First time I had heard that. Of course this was the same person who told me I should go to church every time the doors opened! Told them BTDT as a child. My choice as an adult.

Ooh, even my Grandparents weren't THAT bad. Of course NO religion was as good as Baptist but any religion was slightly better than no religion at all.

I attended Catholic schools growing up in the '50s and '60s. One grammar school nun told us if we ever found ourselves and family in a part of the country where there were no Catholic churches to attend on a sunday, to locate an Epicopalian church and attend their services. It was close enough to Roman Catholicism. No matter what, you had to attend church on a Sunday no matter where you were.

Yes, when I vacation with my mother she always finds a Catholic Mass.
Eta: That's not true! It's true in the states. When we went oversees her husband, who is the one she converted to marry, told her she should avoid the foreign churches I believe, lol.

begging the pardon of the GOP, but what is the pope's job? Leader of the wealthiest organization in the world. He is also the head of state of Vatican City, a sovereign city-state. He is higher up on a political ladder than most of the GOP.
