Years ago I remember the mantra was buy and hold. This was before low cost trading was around and the internet trading was an infant. Does anyone still practice this? Just wondering.

It depends. How's that for an answer?
As a serious investor (it's a line item in my income), I buy and hold core holdings spending only an hour reviewing each per qtr and never really change: ♤ SPY ♡ SCHA ◇ SCHD ♧ MDIV - added January 2015 upping monthly dividends
But an hour per week evaluating explore portfolio holdings and rarely change these: ♤ DIS ♡ JCI - decided not to sell ◇ JPM ♧ MCK ♤ TASR - increased last week
Even more often on options -- often daily.
Last yr was 300 trades and I was NOT churning my accounts. This year it'll be slower
EDITED: JUST COUNTED. ONLY 109 TRANSACTIONS TO DATE. So see, I've slowed way down

I do, I do! I also do some day and swing trades with a discount broker. Buy and hold has always proven to be a good strategy for me.

If anything, buy and hold has gotten more popular over the last several years.

The main ones that advocate constantly turning your portfolio over are the Advisers and brokerages who make money off the turnover. Buy and Hold should be the Mainstay of everyone's portfoilio.

ripvanwinkle, Please see wxyz's thread, "the Long term Investor" on this board. This should answer many of your questions. Buy and hold is alive and well for many posters here, but we also believe in dividend re-investing to increase the holdings. If you are looking for stocks that are considered "risky", buy and hold is not the answer for these types of stocks. We are thinking in terms of holding specific stocks for years, and even decades in some specific stocks.
Dividends are a great reward.

I went to a Schwab seminar today and discovered that although I call it Core v Explore v Speculative, it really is just long (& longer) term V short term with:
82% Long Term: ♤ SPY - reinvest dividends ♡ SCHA - reinvest dividends ◇ SCHD - reinvest dividends ♧ MDIV - added January 2015 - reinvest dividends ♤ DIS ♡ JCI - decided not to sell ◇ JPM ♧ MCK
■ 10% CA$H
8% Short Term (will increase to 10% from long term holdings dividends or growth within this area eventually): ☆ Options ☆ TASR - Increased last week
