I feel like I had to read that in high school English. anyone else? I think it's set in NH so it would make sense that it would be on your curriculum . ha, valid. we also had A Separate Peace, which I want to say is Philips Academy, also in this area.

Pretty sure I read that and Peace Breaks Out in HS. I've always remembered the theme of young men feeling lost on how to define themselves right after war ends, because everyone coming back from the war is being hailed as heroes and the embodiment of masculinity, while these young men have no way to test themselves in a similar arena. Reminds me of Tyler Durden's lines in Fight Club: “We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War's a spiritual war. Our Great Depression is our lives. We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won't. And we're slowly learning that fact. And we're very, very pissed off.”

I love the Gabriel Allon series, my mother got me into it. I enjoy Silva's take on Middle Eastern politics and culture, and love the relationship between Gabriel and Chiara. I'm currently reading Chuck Palahniuk's Invisible Monsters I will patiently wait for your reaction to Invisible Monsters. Finished it, loved it. I see a lot of repeated themes from Fight Club.

Just read Pachinko. Great read about how Koreans are perceived and discriminated against in Japan.

Listening to "The Other Wes Moore" by Wes Moore.
Reading "Less" by Andrew Sean Greer.
Enjoying both of them.
Finished Little Women last week - I don't think I had ever read it before (shocking, as an English major).
My "goal" is 52 books read or listened to this year. I don't know if I'll make it, but I'll try.

I was telling someone about my goal earlier this month, and I usually just keep a list in the Notes app on my phone. She said that she uses a notebook and writes the book, the author, quotes she likes, and some thoughts about the book/writing. So, I decided to do that. It will help me remember the book more as well as go back to see if I liked or disliked a particular author.

Most of my reading is with my kids these days, but this year I'm trying to limit the time suck of mindless internet sites and read more books for myself too.
I finished "Superman-Dawn Breaker" by Michael De La Pena. (I didn't say I was going to read difficult books!) It was fun and had a good modern day take on refugees.
Currently reading "Black Enough" a collection of short stories of growing up black by various authors.
Ds and I are reading the Chronicles of Narnia and are on "The Horse and his Boy". I'd never read the series so its new for both of us. The bias is painful and we have to stop and discuss that at least once every session, but the stories have been good.

Just finished - Giver of Stars by Jojo Moyes
My friend just gave me - Hotel At the Corner of Bitter & Sweet, but I may start on that when I come back from my trip next month.

I like to read for escape, and when I escape I like Romantic Fiction. I am listening to Huckleberry Lake by Catherine Anderson as my Audible Selection, and reading Under Currents by Nora Robers (I have my e-reader on airplane mode b/c this is borrowed from my local library my libby ap indicates I returned Under Currents on Jan 14th)
I also am 85% done listening to a Robyn Carr Audio book I borrowed from the library, and it was returned before I was done - it is back in my library and I have 3 days to finish it, so I guess I need to switch to that before I go back to Huckleberry Lake Audible selection.

Finished Olivia Joules and the Overactive Imagination last week. I found it meh. Not what I was expecting.
Just finished The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper. I really enjoyed it and found some good life points from it.
Audiobook - If Beale Street Could Talk right now. So far, okay.
Next actual book...unsure. Will decide tomorrow.

Finished White Fragility: Why it's so hard for white people to talk about race.
Very informative and I consider myself lucky I've had people in my life willing to educate me and that I've been willing to learn.
Still got a long way to go though. All white people should read this book.
Then I read The Future of Another Timeline by Annalee Newitz.
More feminist fiction. This one is about an alternate reality where women have no rights and a group of women from 2022 are working to alter that. It was slow to start but I really got into it and finished it in less than 48 hours.
Read The Power of Bad How the negativity effect rules us and how we can rule it. Thinking of being passive aggressive and putting a copy on the free book shelf in the lab.

ReadingWhat Alice Forgot. It’s an interesting read and a little scary what can happen in a family in just a few short years.

I read that and saw the movie. It is terrifying how life can change like that. It happened to a grad school friend's mom. She was in a nursing home with early onset dementia before 55.

Finished this one last night
Love wins : the lovers and lawyers who fought the landmark case for marriage equality by Debbie Cenziper and Jim Obergefell
Reading the arguments used against gay marriage are mind boggling to me.

I'm reading Broke Millenial Takes on Investing. It's a pretty simple/rudimentary guide so more of a skimmer. Starting to think I need to look into diversifying and re-balancing my portfolio so it is a bit helpful I think. I don't know why investing and books on investing intimidate me so much.

Finished Three Women by Lisa Taddeo.
Very enthralling. It's a non fiction book following three women in life, love and sex.

The last two books I finished were White Fang and Killing Lincoln. I really enjoyed both of them. I wasn't sure what to expect from Killing Lincoln, but I found it a very suspenseful, easy-to-read, factual account of the events.
The last audiobook I finished was If Beale Street Could Talk. It was good, and I think fairly applicable to today's society as well.
Right now, I'm listening to Us Against You by Fredrik Backman, whom I adore. This is the sequel to Bear Town. If you haven't read any Backman, you need to!!!
I think I'll read Killing Kennedy next.

I found Killing Kennedy to be drier than Killing Lincoln but still an interesting read. Killing England and Killing the SS were both REALLY good. I learned a lot from both of those that school doesn't cover in history class. We are not the saints of WWII that we like to think we are.

I only bought Lincoln and Kennedy (the bookstore had them each for $4), so I will now be on the hunt for England and SS. Have you read Killing Reagan? I'm trying to get DH to read Lincoln - he only reads books based on true stories because he has no imagination (his words) and can't picture the characters. I got him into Jon Krakauer for a bit (Into Thin Air, Into the Wild), but I think he would really like Killing Lincoln.

I have not read Killing Reagan. I also haven't read Killing Jesus. I looked it up and he's got a new one out Killing Crazy Horse that I would like to read.

There is also Killing the Rising Sun and Killing Patton. I seriously had no idea there were so many out there!
I have absolutely no interest in Killing Jesus. I will, eventually, read all the rest though.

I don't think we are either but after reading that book we like to speak out of both sides of our mouths when it comes to WWII. We have our fair share of Nazi dirt that still has to be reckoned with.
You want to be even more appalled read Citizen 865. NONE of this was taught to me in history class.

Did not end up finishing or even really starting Cosmology of Monsters. I didn't make it past the first chapter, I couldn't get into it. Maybe I'll try again some other time.
Right now I am reading this
The Great Pretender: The Undercover Mission That Changed Our Understanding of Madness
As a person with anxiety the way we handle and label mental illness is of unique interest to me. While getting rid of barbaric institutions and their practices was a good thing we never did the work to replace it with a better system. We just left those who can't handle the outside world to fend for themselves.
It's not the first, nor will it likely be the last, public health issue this country has totally boondoggled.

Remember the tv show Rizzoli and Isles from some years back? I'm reading the series by Tess Gerritsen. I like them. I only caught a few random episodes on tv, so I'm anxious to get through all the books and then start the show from the beginning.

For any of you who have both Amazon Prime reading & Kindle Unlimited, they are basically combined now. All Prime books are KU books, so they will count against your total allowed. They used to be separate things so when I tried to get a Prime book the other day and it took me to KU and told me to return something, I was confused. I asked Amazon, that was their explanation.
So, basically the Prime reading perk is not one at all if you also are a KU subscriber. I only Prime reading now and then so I just caught on. IDK if it would be useful information for any of you guys but wanted to share.
