Orioles play to empty stadium what do you think?

What do you think of the Baltimore Orioles playing in an empty stadium tonight due to the potential violence?

I think it's sad, but I guess they have to stay as close to the schedule as possible, in order to avoid makeup games and conflicts, right?

I think it also sends a message to the people of Baltimore: we as ballplayers don't feel safe having you in Camden Yards. This is hallowed ground for baseball fans, and as players, we appreciate that. But if you are willing to set fire to your city, there's no telling what you will do to a stadium.

(Oh, and there is that curfew thing. If the game extends past curfew time, no one could attend, I'm thinking.)

I get that the vast majority of residents did not do the damage, do not approve of what happened, and a number of them are pitching in to clean up and stop further atrocious behavior, because they know destruction changes nothing; it only breeds more destruction. But I think the team is doing the right thing. If it reflects badly on the city, then so be it. If it punishes ticketholders for that game, so be it. Lesson learned and hopefully, not repeated.

I'm guessing those rioting probably didn't have Orioles tickets. Just a guess. I think they are pushing away people who come into the city and spend money while attending games.

Likely very true. Which is all the worse because it punishes people who do have tickets and probably did not have a thing to do with the riots. But the rioters have gotten very close to east Baltimore and thus endanger everyone. It makes the entire city look bad, I know. But sometimes this is the big punishment required for the acts of a small minority. I don't like it, but I don't blame anyone for making the decision.

See, I heard that too. That the rioters were close to the ball park.

I think it sucks for everyone that wants to see the games, play the games or has an interest in the games. Like the folks working the concession stands. It's a bad deal all around. I understand why it's happening this way, but it just sucks.

LOL Unless it winds up being a high scoring game, I'd think it would fly by. Around 2 hours maybe.


Will they still take the same amount of time between innings? That 2 minutes or so is usually because of television commercial time.

So it should be done by curfew, yet they still decided on an empty stadium. A shame, really, but safer for the players and the integrity of the park.

Another thing the 10 PM curfew is hurting are restaurants and entertainment. Who would go downtown if they have to leave at 10 PM.

No. The curfew is citywide and extends to everyone, regardless of age, except for people who are working in essential positions such as hospitals, clinics and the like; law enforcement and emergency personnel and others with valid reason to be out between 10 pm and 5 am.

Seriously? Apparently you don't get out much.  It was packed this past weekend against the Sox.

I think they did the right thing. It was a quick game and a win! They had a group of fans outside the stadium that cheered the entire game and you could here them. That was pretty awesome.

It's sad.

We call Camden Yards  Fenway South.  Red Sox fans love it there and we show up en masse when we play the Orioles.  And we a ton of money in Baltimore when we do so.

Saturday there was rioting near the ballpark.  And the Sox lost.  

Today's game must have been very strange for the players and a huge financial loss for the vendors.  

And to what end?  We don't have all the facts.  The community is in shambles.  And the actions of the few are causing the suffering of the many.

Actually, although Baltimore is a city in decline (if steps aren't taken it will be another Detriot in 5 - 10 years, St. Louis not far behind that), but it has a pretty good baseball team and dedicated fans.

Also, Baltimore is famous for its row houses and its inner historic harbor. White flight has abandoned people who have never learned how to work, to be the majority in the city...and they want to burn it down? What are these people thinking?

I was very impressed with a video of a mom smacking her little thug in the making upside the head. She should be up for some sort of award, for caring.

To me, the whole thing seems surreal and bizarre.

On the other hand, playing in an empty stadium may bring out the best in some players (no fan pressure). There is always a silver lining, if you look for it.

I know I am being somewhat flippant, but, you don't trash your own neighborhood, if you have a brain at least the size of a pea.

I'm glad the mom stepped up, any action that requires you hide your face, isn't a good one. Kudos to mom.

2 hours and 3 minutes for the game yesterday. 

I still think it's a shame that they closed it to the public. For a variety of reasons, including but not limited too... Caving in to these idiot protesters is the wrong message to send. The various workers at the stadium, etc who were affected and lost income because of this.

When people haven't worked for what they've been given, they feel no ownership in it. Which is why burning down "their homes and stores" is just that. Someone else's problem. The criminals will be given free housing again somewhere else and they'll "move on." I feel sorry for the people who do work, own a home or a business or both, in the area who saw their hard work go up in flames. Insurance in bad areas is so expensive that most people skip it.

It was a shame, but they would have had to dedicate resources to protecting the fans going in and out of the game. It was more important that those resources were elsewhere in the city. We had tickets to a game this weekend and even if they decided to play here, we would not have gone.

Even though the city is not doing well, the sports teams are fully supported as we have some of the best fans in the country. This whole thing makes me so sad.

I get it. Those resources were and are needed elsewhere. I just hated that it happened that way. 

I've visited Baltimore twice and very much enjoyed myself. (except when trying to drive around in the city... IT'S MADDENING. lol)
