CarolinaKat - would you like to research eBay to find out what my collection of Avon perfume bottles is worth? Me neither. I know those are in the basement somewhere, and I just need to tell C that if he runs across them, they can go in the donate pile. Maybe I'd let each girl pick one out to keep, but they both have ridiculous amounts of stuff, and it would just get lost.
As a note, I never chose to collect Avon perfume bottles. My family decided on that collection for me, when I was like 2. I also never decided to collect dolls or music boxes, but collect them I did. Some of the dolls can go. The porcelain figurines my uncle got me in Okinawa can stay. Some of my music boxes are actually lovely, though many still decorate my dad's house. I did decide on my own to collect spoons (keeping) and decorative plates (not keeping).

My MIL was a world class hoarder - the kind they do television shows about.
DH isn't as bad, but he does have a problem getting rid of things. Part of it is a time thing - when he's not working, he doesn't want to be sorting through boxes or going through a stack of magazines. I'm really hoping that when he retires in the next year, he will make time to organize. And toss!
I have discovered the key to getting DH to get rid of at least some things. If I do the preliminary work to organize some things to go through, then he will. And he doesn't mind getting rid of old still-wearable clothes if it's going to a good charity.
We also have WAY too many books. I used to re-read them, but now I mostly just borrow from the library. And DH doesn't go back to his old books either. Our city has a yearly book sale. Whoo-hoo! In the past I would get overwhelmed by not having containers to transport the books in. Now we have a number of sturdy boxes from Costco and the city will be collecting books for the next two months. I want to get rid of many, many books!
I also need to get serious about tossing old records. We have a great document scanner and I've scanned in a fair number of records, but I'm hardly done. Thank goodness newer records are just downloadable as pdf's.

It is easier to get rid of stuff if you can give it to a person who wants it. Perfect is if you can get a poverty stricken teen to leave home and take a lot of your old stuff like towels or a young adult to buy a home and take your old tools and yard equipment then it isn't like throwing away valuable stuff but just helping someone out.

Funny! when I was living back home with parents. Even then Two charities said this is too old we don't want it!
yea - outdated fashion was part of it! kept in great condition! however the two charities didn't want those butterfly collar shirts and bell bottom pants!

I collect Beatles memorabilia. However, I have one junk room and one room full of stuff from my parents. My summer's plan is to get both of those rooms and the garage cleaned out this summer. Hopefully, the basement room full of boxes next summer.
I know myself and I will never get to the basement and the two bedrooms this summer. My head is in a better place over losing my mom almost a year down the road, so my goal is to get those two rooms cleaned out.

I hate clutter. When we moved to the house we're in now, I said that no kid stuff was going on the first floor, only the 2nd, so at least it looks like adults live here when you walk in! I grew up in a house that always had clutter. Shoes were left wherever they were taken off, cupboard doors left open, kitchen chairs never pushed in, tables covered in newspapers and mail. In my house, if you don't put your shoes in the designated area, you are likely to find them tossed out on the deck!

My garage is currently in need of a good clean out. We just bought all new furniture for the living room, so our tiny one car garage that is too small to fit a car anyway, is crammed with furniture. I'm trying to unload it for super cheap on a yard sale site, but if I don't get any takers I'm hiring someone to take it out of here...
Very supportive.

Very supportive. I have avoided going there. I will join in when I actually am ready to start on my de-cluttering. I have to get through tax season first. One more day!

Will look at the thread over the weekend. Time to rest up tomorrow and busy on Friday.
