INNOCENT HABITS THAT CAN HURT YOUR HEALTH You cross your legsSitting with legs crossed at the knee can bump up blood pressure, according to a study published in Blood Pressure Monitoring. Leg crossing increased systolic blood pressure nearly 7 percent and diastolic by 2 percent. "Frequent crossing of the legs also puts stress on the hip joints and can cause pooling of blood in the legs when the veins are compressed," says Stephen T. Sinatra, MD, FACC, a Connecticut-based cardiologist and author of The Great Cholesterol Myth. "This could predispose you to inflammation of the veins of the lower legs and possibly a blood clot." Dr. Sinatra says to avoid crossing your legs for longer than 10 to 15 minutes, and to get up and walk around every half hour or so. That and other innocent bad habits here (capitalization, them): ABC News/Health "INNOCENT HABITS THAT CAN HURT YOUR HEALTH"

I thought the most ladylike way to sit was with the ankles crossed, not crossing the legs at the knees. However, I'm definitely not the best person to be schooling anyone on proper ladylike behavior.

I agree that's the "old fashioned, etiquette school" way (and that one is probably perfectly safe)... modern leg crossers that I have seen usually do it at the knee.

Amazingly when I Googled " ladies crossed legs pics talk show"... only THREE pictures came up with a lady with her legs crossed at the ankles. The rest of the hundreds of crossed legs revealed were at the knee... including women that were also in two of the three "ankle crosser" pictures (multiple women in those two pics, one ankle crossed and one knee crossed in each)... plus this old timey picture: which is either BEAUTIFULLY aged artificially, or shows that some were doing it wrong "back in the good old days"! ETA: Not arguing which is proper and which isn't... just giving insight to where I got the information for my previous statement of " modern leg crossers that I have seen usually do it at the knee".

That's a posed picture - in which case, it probably isn't a habitual leg-cross.
I also don't cross my legs - I cross my feet at the ankles. When I'm at my desk, my legs are also extended under the desk. If I'm sitting on someone's sofa, my ankles are crossed with my legs angled to the right.
Sitting in a restaurant, etc ,ankles crossed, but knees at bent 90° angles, or both feet flat on the floor - same in the house at kitchen or dining table.
I find a full leg-cross (like the pic) very uncomfortable for any given length of time.

I just find it interesting that women on talk (that's the where I go my "the ones that I've seen" statement) shows mostly do it "cross knee" style. This is the first row of images that comes up for me (spoilered for size): All "knee crossers" (except the second one... no crossing at all, just a weird angle from what I can tell)... Here's the first "ankle crosser" in that search... and it's got a "knee crosser" in it too! (this one is in my search's second row) ETA: well... the images didn't come through the post for some reason... gotta figure that out and edit them back in... gimme a minute. ETA II: hope this works!

According to my vein specialist: no crossing - period. Not at the knees or ankles. Both can cause pooling of blood and circulation issues. Neither will cause spider or varicose veins (those conditions are primarily inherited, BTW), but if you have either condition, crossing your legs or ankles isn't helping the issue. And GET UP!!!!!!!! MOVE AROUND!!!!!!!!!!!!! Every hour, if possible, even if it's at your desk for a few minutes. Get that party started in your legs again by flexing your feet and ankles, if that's all you can do.

Women should sit like this, even in skirts.

That's not sitting. That's advertising (and don't excite Blue. His ticker can't take it).

Heh. I've always had a tendency to "perch" instead of sit on my backside. That took some real concentration to break the habit, as I knew it was bad for circulation.

I'm horrible about crossing my legs. I've known for years it is bad for circulation but even when I consciously try not to cross as soon as I start concentrating on work the next thing I realize is my legs are crossed.

<<uncrosses legs>>
Can this be pinned at the top, please for my daily reminder? TYIA I have a horrible habit of doing this and sitting sideways at my desk to the point where my left side hurts now from doing it. Thank you for the reminder. You'd think the side hurting would do it but I can be a bit thick headed.
Shit! <<uncrosses legs>>

But notice, I didn't say what PART of the leg (and ankle is a leg part... same as knee is). If you limit your search to the ankle, there's no surprise when the results are populated by ankle.

This is how I usually place my legs when sitting either on the sofa or as a passenger in a car, airplane, etc. When I'm sitting at my desk, they're usually directly in front of me - not to the side, but still crossed at the ankles.
I think the only time my feet might both be planted flat on the floor when sitting, is when I'm sitting at the table to eat dinner - even then, I'm pretty sure I usually cross them at the ankle, since I do it subconsciously out of habit.
