In related news, of course, liberals now LOVE the idea of an endless war in Afghanistan! Show me some liberals that used to speak out against the war & now LOVE the war in afghanistan. Also, it might be worth noting that they are saying we MAY stay in afghanistand, not we WILL stay as you said in the title. It seems the complete timeframe is still unknown.

Considering we're still in Korea 60 years after the Korean war, I wouldn't be surprised if we stay in Afghanistan a little longer than 2014.

I don't think anyone is surprised, except apparently Obama, since he said we would be out by then...yet another indication the man is either a compulsive liar or he actually is retarded...

There is no question, we will be in the country in some form after 2014...unless a new president decides we pull out completely, but no matter what they campaign on, once they become the POTUS and they learn the true facts, as we have found out with Guantanamo, electioneering rhetoric , realities of the topic makes a change on position necessary and here too , I believe the same thing will happen.

Yeah, why DO we have troops in Germany? I say we close all military bases in Maine.

So, basically your saying our vote doesn't really matter because the new president isn't likely to hold to his campaign promises. I have to agree with you on that.

Yah, I never expected us to get out of Afghanistan completely. You probably would have to be an idiot to believe that... either that or uneducated, since the US has a long history of maintaining bases in countries that we've engaged in war-like activities..

some people who voted for obama thought we'd be completely out by now. www.ky3.com/sns-ap-as-gates-afghanistan,0,843857.story but he ruled out permanent military bases in the strategically important country. Gates said the U.S. is interested in keeping a military presence in this former al-Qaida haven beyond the planned end of combat in three yearswhere will they be "based" the holiday inn? ;D Vexing questions remain about whether Kabul will be ready to govern by 2015 and prevent a return to extremist Taliban rule. Campbell said 90 percent of civilian casualties in his area of responsibility are caused by the Taliban
afghansiatn will be the next potus' war and possibly the next after that.

Perfectly normal for a transition team to remain on site after troops have left. It's necessary, in fact.

If so, and a different one, he will inherit a better set up then the present one did , which was a seven year waste of $ spent and neglect as far as a plan and asserts. He did his study, covered all the bases. Unless they are lying I have watched the Generals in recent press conferences run from the pentagon to Afghanistan's were the Generals are, and whole there is no great news , the news is not bad, fairly straight as to what is and what is not being accomplished. There are roads, schools , markets being built. they're are villages taking part in these things. The Afghans are slowly taking over and the talibam whole still a force are also being hurt badly. We still have till 2014 according to the plan for the Afghans to take over the major defense of the country, we'll have to see .

So are you giving Bush credit for getting the ball rolling, or is this more of a jab at Bush again since you seem to think Obama is doing such a great job at everything?

Afganistan, complete cluster F. he went in because the ones who attacked us were there, asked the taliban to give them up, kick them out tm, they didn';t so we took them out and were going after alQuida the perps, but then, Iraq ..and Afganistan, back burner, wsted $, troops, we just did little in 7 years. Just before he left office , a few months , sent the right person over to do a study, Pakistan, Aganistan, came back , read the study, said to late, just drop it let the new Presidernt handle Afganistan, not sure he even got the report to hinm ..read Woodwards book , it happened. A cluster F..sorry but he mishandked it after Iraq was entered into. The Military , in Obamas fact gathering, came up with a plan, Obama heard them out. As he said, seven years ago, maybe , now no way. A trillion. 80,0000 more troops, and indefinite time line.. there was more. Read the book, all there.

"Defense Secretary Robert Gates said from Afghanistan on Monday that the U.S. military is well positioned to start withdrawing some troops in July, though he said a U.S. presence may remain in the country past the 2014 deadline to transfer security control to local forces." --- Can we impeach him now?

Why not just let him finish out his first term in office and save the expense of impeaching him.. Just a suggestion.. BTW if anyone can guess how long our troops will be in Afghanistan they must be getting some confidential data that the rest of us don't have including our representatives who have no idea when our troops will be home from the Afghan.. It is impossible even for the Commanders to determine when our troops will be home.... Many so called Military experts had no idea our troops would be in Korea, Germany, and the Middle East for so long a period of time... And there is some movement in congress to bring them home and save a few $Trillion bucks over the next ten years....

Why would we want to do that? This is normal procedure and has been in every similar situation.
