I really don't know what I would do without such brilliant advice. Here I was, going to "donate" all my old dirty laundry, including all the outfits that my infant puked and pooped all over, but since you made me see the light and showed me that it's not real charity, I will re-think my decision. THANK YOU. Lena

Lena, I don't know for sure, but I'm guessing toughtimes' response was more to this:
than your OP.

If it is still in real good shape, l'll donate it. If not I will throw it quickly away. I worked a disaster phone bank once after our area had a series of tornados. Folks were wanting to donate clothing like gangbusters! We sent them to the Salvation Army who was the only charity who would accept them. Afterwards I found out the vast majority of charities don't want clothes. So I limit my donations to the good stuff.
I wish I could remember the name of the organization who helps women find professional wear for interviews and such. Most of them are either welfare moms or just the ordinary working poor. I do remember they were picky and would not take things more than two or three years old and in good condition! It meant something to those woman to look nice and have a chance at a better job. Most of them couldn't afford to buy anything new to begin with.

Agathas - the name of the charity to help women with business clothes is Dress For Success. They provide interview suits, help with interview skills and career development to low income women. They are located in over 75 cities world-wide.

I only donate things that I am willing to buy, that means no stains, holes, dirt, etc, Has to be totally useable.
I know there was an article in our local paper about how people were just dumping their junk off at the Salvation Army and how much it cost them to get rid of it.
So I don't donate anything that isn't useable.

Maybe the things with obvious stains or tears could go to an animal shelter for dog/cat bedding? The animals won't care if it's stained or torn as long as it's comfy!
For Goodwill, I only donate what I would want to be seen in, unless it is going to third world countries where they are desperate for clothing.
