I agree with minnesotapaintlady that everyone dies of something, so I continue to use 1/3 shortening and 2/3 butter in my pie crust even though trans fats (aka shortening or margarine) are super bad for you. Try lard. It sounds awful, but makes THE BEST PIE CRUST EVER !!! Promise. It does.

Ok I'll try it. Does lard keep forever? Do you have to keep it in the fridge? I've never used it before so I don't know these things.

MPL - Was never a diet soda drinker, and I've managed to kick my soda habit for the most part. But come after my coffee or wine and we will have issues. You must be my long lost twin sister!!!

I love my Diet Pepsi. It's my one vice and I've tried quitting a couple times, but was miserable. Screw it. We're all going to die. I share your vice and have cut back drastically 2s, Mom told me last night that my Dad's death certificate says "Cause of Death: ALS". I thought the Dr's said he had something similar to ALS but it was not ALS. I also am convinced I have Alzheimer's. A heart attack would probably be a better way to go.

But I only buy the small package (think it's a pound?) and use it as an excuse to make up a bunch of pies. Because... you know, we need to use it up.

You can pry my diet pepsi out of my cold dead hands.
I have about 1 a day. Sometimes 2. I don't like coffee, so I need something to keep me awake.

I drank diet soda for a while, but wound up with problems due to excessive caffeine--diet coke has more caffeine than regular, and since there's no calories I tended to drink more of it. Aspartame isn't that bad for you--it's the methyl ester of a natural dipeptide (Asp-Phe I think? Could be Phe-Asp) so the biggest issue is that methanol is the hydrolysis product. However, its sweetening power is very high so I believe there's something like 20-30 mg per can which would translate to maybe a few microliters of methanol. Or if you're a phenylketonuric, you can't drink it. I believe there were some adverse effects demonstrated with earlier artificial sweeteners, and I haven't kept up with the most recent one. Y'all can Google as well as I can. ETA: I went with some non-caffeinated diet sodas after having caffeine issues and discovered that Fresca gives me migraines. I should probably go through the ingredient list and figure out what precisely the trigger is.

Don't really care about the health mumbo jumbo, people should stop drinking diet soda because they taste like chemicals and ass. What I wouldn't give for a little coke and ass right now.

I have never drank diet sodas (okay yes I did drink Tab for a while back in the 80's ) but cannot stand the taste of diet. I have always been a regular coke drinker. I used to drink 4-5 a day back in the 90's. Now I only drink 1 a day and only during the week, none on the weekends. I drink it for the afternoon caffeine boost. I hate coffee and tea so unless I can find something with a good caffeine content that doesn't taste like crap and doesn't cost a lot (about 25 cents a can when bought at Costco) I will continue with my coke a day.

Well, if you are going with personal experience: I have: Friend who NEVER drinks carbonated drinks like soda or carbonated water. Never. Not once in the 30 years I've known her. She recently hit the dreaded "obese" BMI category after years of being overweight and while she has lost some weight (she's back in the "overweight" BMI category) she's struggling to get to the lower end of "overweight". I'm pretty sure 'drinking soda' is NOT the cause of her weight issues. I have another friend who is attempting to right some physical conditions of aging without resorting to medication - loose weight, lower blood pressure, avoid needing drugs for diabetes, sleep better at night, etc... She's working with her doctor and has lost the weight (she's at the low end of 'overwieght' BMI). She finally decided to cut out the artificial sweetners/diet soda. She was mostly artificial sweetner free for about a year (no more diet soda) and she pretty much says she feels about the same as she did when she was drinking diet soda/artificially sweetened drinks/etc. She still struggles to mainatin her weight. She'd go back to drinking diet soda/etc - but she likes the one benefit of spending less money! enough to NOT go back. I drink diet soda - always have - it's just a default for me - I don't ever consciously or unconsciously think "ooooh! I have a diet soda so I can eat more X!!" I have cut back to one soda with dinner and then none after that because Caffiene started effecting my ability to sleep thru the night. I also cut back on coffee during the day (and cut an additional can of soda out during the day). I sleep really well now. I managed to loose 35 pounds on Weight Watchers without once drinking plain water. I drink coffee, tea, diet coke, the occasional glass of milk, glass of wine, or bottle of Cider/Perry. I have gained back 20 pounds but that's because i keep eating too much. It's really sad how little food a person actually needs to survive.

Ok I'll try it. Does lard keep forever? Do you have to keep it in the fridge? I've never used it before so I don't know these things. My mom use to keep it in the fridge. It makes really good pie crusts. It's also good for frying things like leftover baked potatoes. Mmmmmm. OK, I haven't bought or used lard in 20 years. I see it at the grocery - it's in a Green and White 'brick' like a pound of butter - I think Armour makes lard and the packaging may also say Manteca (which always reminds me of the Jazz song by Willie Bobo: Spanish Grease - Must now go and listen to some old Verve jazz albums... ) ADDED: I've heard lard is the best way to make fried chicken at home - never had fried chicken as a kid so can't vouch for this. I know the 'magic' for fried green tomatos is Bacon Grease - but I have it on good authority that lard is acceptable if you don't have bacon grease. I suspect any sort of 'green' sauted with lard would be tastier than when made with olive oil. mmmm collards or beet greens, mmmmmm UPDATE: It's Dizzy Gillespie's Manteca! from the old Verve jazz albums.... Spanish Grease is on there too... stupid music on a ginormous harddrive - so no album covers/liner notes and you can mix and match your music. Can't keep it all straight in my head anymore.

When one of the causes on my mom's death certificate said obesity, I got serious about losing weight. I realize we are all going to die but I'm not from that.

It appears I should have phrased that better. If you are OK with diet soda drinking perhapscontributing to your death, so am I.Not a single study has demonstrated this. The best that they have done is said that there is a correlation and correlation does not equal causation. That is the point people have made. There are a load of confounders that are not addressed in these studies and until they are addressed, then there will NEVER be anything greater than a correlation. There might not ever be anything greater proven, but that does not mean diet soda isn't bad for you. I switched to unsweet tea, from diet coke. It is an easy change for some, and maybe harder change for others, I guess.

Diet soda is either bad for you or not. Whatever the case may be does not depend on what can be proven. An inelegant way to say what I am thinking, sorry about that.

On the plus side, I now have healthy teeth after a lot of work and a slimmer belly.

Tea is still acidic and it can also badly stain your teeth.

I just did a quick google search on acid in tea, and found this A recent test of the effect of tea's acidity on tooth enamel found that the level of acidity in black tea is low enough that it does not pose any risk of eroding tooth enamel, and thus that tea can be a safe substitute for people looking to remove more acidic drinks (like fruit juices or soft drinks) from their diet.
What do you suggest to drink other then water . eta: Just to be clear, I am not saying anyone should quit drinking soda. I am just saying what I do and why.

I'm actually more worried about the teeth thing than anything. That (and the expense) are the reason I try really hard to limit myself to two a day. Seriously I would (and did) drink a lot more than that. I have never had my dentist tell me I have enamel issues and haven't had a cavity since I was 17, but I'd like to keep it that way.

I don't like the taste of anything diet. I also don't think there is anything healthy about anything diet. This is a non issue for me. I mostly drink water and juice. Juice is acidic though, so I try not to drink more than a cup a day. I'm good with the sugar in juice. My glucose levels are excellent! People have to make their own choices and no why they are making them.

I drink water. I actually like water. I've never been fond of sweet drinks. As far as health is concerned, I figure I'm 73 and there's nothing really serious wrong. Blood pressure is good, glucose levels are good, weight is low (but it's always been low), other labs are all within normal ranges. I don't take any medications for chronic conditions, take a daily multivitamin and D3 during the winter months when I don't get outside. As long as that continues, I'm going to eat and drink whatever I like. If something shows up wrong somewhere along the line, I'll take a look at ways to mitigate if it seems advisable. Other than that, I'm just going to live my life.
