Males do mature more slowly than females. That might have something to do with why fewer are entering colleges. By the time they are thinking in a mature fashion, they've gotten married, had children, and find themselves in a dead-end job and unable to pick up where they left off. I think there is an explanation, but I don't think it's this one. How does this theory explain the 40%+ of men who DO go to college. Are they somehow biologically more mature? Also, as SF pointed out, this change in attendance rates is relatively recent. If biology was the explanation, are young men different now than in the past? Are the men who do graduate from college now vastly different from those who don't? I don't see how biology and maturation fit the facts.

Maybe they've been reading all the posts on YM about what a waste of money college is.

In the same way it explains why some girls don't go to college. Some choose not to go, some choose to go. Some parents push for education, others don't. The reason the change is recent is because it's only relatively recently that young women have realized they have a place in the higher paying jobs and are striving toward them. They've also realized that marriage is not a requirement, but a choice. While I don't believe there's any one explanation for what's going on, I believe the maturity factor plays in, along with other influences.

Maybe they've been reading all the posts on YM about what a waste of money college is. While I believe college expenses are far too high in our country, there's more to going to college than preparing to earn high bucks. It's an experience from which many young people receive multiple benefits. I'd also say not everyone is cut out for college, and that needs to be recognized. There will always be a need for those who are good with their hands, or artistic, or creative. These folks have a place, too, right alongside the rest of us.
