www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/politics/7458701.htmlThe Texas Nationalist Movement marked Texas Independence Day with a rally on Saturday at the Capitol urging Texans to save the state by seceding from the United States. A small but enthusiastic group of Texas patriots gathered on the steps of the Capitol, as an assortment of massive Texas flags blew above them in the chilly afternoon breeze.

I have a feeling that Texas will be around long after humans have become extinct.

"We are here to raise interest in the Legislature of the possibility of secession to cure the ills of America."(from the link in the OP) Will the secession of Texas cure the ills of America? (But it is worth a try.)

The feds are doing such a poor job of running this country, I would not be surprised to see other states opting out of the union! This won't be any Egypt or Libya - all our wackos are armed!

As far as I know there is no way to opt out of the union, we had a civil war that decided that. The only way a state could leave the union is if everybody agreed to let them leave, and even then I"m not sure.

The only way a state could leave the union is if everybody agreed to let them leave, and even then I"m not sure. While I agree with the sentiment that the Constitution is not a suicide pact, I also can't ignore the truth of what you've posted. This matter is settled, and I don't think Lincoln was a tyrant and all that nonsense and noise from my libertarian brothers and sisters. They're just wrong. The Constitution provides for the suspension of the writ of habeas corpus, etc. in the event of insurrection or rebellion. This is exactly the matter I was bringing to the other thread I started on a new political conversation. And these are exactly the kinds of people we should keep a closer eye on. The underlying problem is not that the Constitution is a suicide pact, it's that the Constitution has so little force of law anymore that states haven't so much decided to divorce the federal government as the federal government has left the states. The real solution is to enforce the Constitution. It is to thoroughly examine the entire US Code and ask the question of every line of every law: Is it Constitutionally permissible? Most of it-- a good 60%, and maybe 80% or more, is NOT.
