He has an iphone. That's about as techy looking as I can get him, unless he wears one of his Dad's Tech-ed polos.

The problem with using your phone or a tablet as a newbie, someone will think you are just messing around on your phone. I know that will change over time, but I wouldn't take any chances.

And in the case with my son, he probably WOULD be just messing around on his phone.

It doesn't matter that it was a school assignment. What matters is that he did it AND he got it! Way to go! HOO-RAH!!!

Talk about a mover and shaker - his first internship at age 12! Yeah, I'd love to brag about what a go-getter he is, but in actuality it's a requirement for school and he was forced to. Still, the school has no affiliation with the businesses the kids get internships with, they have to find a place and convince them to let them in on their own. It's very refreshing to read about schools having kids do assignments that actually matter and will help their future rather than bullshit "create a solar system out of Styrofoam" projects. I'm impressed, both with the assignment and how he's responded to it. Getting an internship like this at such a young age is phenomenal. Hopefully it'll lead to a summer job? Is that legal? Maybe in a couple of years if it's not. In any event, he should create a resume after this. I created my first resume around 14/15, he can do one even sooner since he has this to put on it. Is THAT part of this assignment? Bonus points to your son's school if it is. I would also have him write thank you notes (real paper, not email, and in his very neatest handwriting) to the person who hired him and anyone who spent significant time with him during his days. It's an easy thing to do and it will make him stand out.

The school is a Montessori and the philosophy for teaching the Erdkinder students (7th and 8th grade) is to get them out in real world situations. There isn't a lot of sitting around the classroom. No rows of desks and listening to lectures. They have to have a "career" at school. They can work the coffeehouse that is open a few mornings a month at the school or yearbook or the radio station they run. They have to do a lot of community service and volunteer work and a lot of their learning is on site in immersion trips where the entire class goes somewhere for several days and focus on one thing and they incorporate all kinds of subject matter into the trip. They also don't grade and push the students all helping each other do better. I'm still not sure if that is the best for older son as I think it makes him lazy. He'd probably be more motivated by competition.

THAT IS SO COOL. I was already considering Montessori for my daughter but this is definitely helping me make up my mind That's awesome, and fits in very well with what *I* think kids should be learning about at that age. If it's okay with your DS, can you post what he wrote for his cover letter? I'm really curious.

If it's okay with your DS, can you post what he wrote for his cover letter? I'm really curious. uh...yeah. His cover letter is pretty sparse as he'd already lined up the position over the phone and was just backfilling to meet the requirements for school. But, this is it. I didn't help him at all except remove some redundant lines. My name is _________, I am a seventh grader enrolled at Bluffview Montessori School and am interested in job shadowing in the IT department at Fastenal. I believe this would be a good fit for me because I have always had an interest in computers and coding and this would be a good way for me to get a feel for what goes on at Fastenal as well as giving you an opportunity to meet me and see what I have to offer. I am a motivated worker, and team player. I have achieved the rank of First Class in Boy Scouts my first year and have received the Computers merit badge. I have experience with Google Drive and MS Word as well as some Java script coding and robotics experience. I learn new programs and software quickly and am comfortable with technology. I am excited at the prospect of spending some time at Fastenal. Please feel free to contact me with any questions.
