Received this in an e-mail:

Let's ditch the Kansas City Chiefs, the Atlanta Braves and the Cleveland Indians. Cleveland Browns possibly refers to skin color.

The Carolina Panthers obviously were named to keep the memory of militant Blacks from the 60's alive. Gone. It's offensive to us white folk.

The New York Yankees offend the Southern population. Do you see a team named for the Confederacy? No! There is no room for any reference to that tragic war that cost this country so many young men's lives.

I am also offended by the blatant references to the Catholic religion among our sports team names. Totally inappropriate to have the New Orleans Saints, the Los Angeles Angels or the San Diego Padres.

Then there are the team names that glorify criminals who raped and pillaged. We are talking about the horrible Oakland Raiders, the Minnesota Vikings, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Pittsburgh Pirates!

Now, let us address those teams that clearly send the wrong message to our children. The San Diego Chargers promote irresponsible fighting or even spending habits. Wrong message to our children.

The New York Giants and the San Francisco Giants promote obesity, a growing childhood epidemic. Wrong message to our children.

The Cincinnati Reds promote downers/barbiturates. Wrong message to our children.

The Milwaukee Brewers. Well that goes without saying. Wrong message to our children.

So, there you go. We need to support any legislation that comes out to rectify this travesty, because the government will likely become involved with this issue, as they should. Just the kind of thing the do-nothing Congress loves.

You forgot the Chicago Bears.

Browns does not refer to skin color.  Brown-skinned were allowed.  Black-skinned were not.

The word "giant" would refer to height, not obesity.  A giant is tall.  If he is also obese that just makes him fat.

Reds (referring to barbiturates) is of fairly recent vintage.  A quick search shows that Seconal was patented in 1934.  They could have gone with reds as referring to communists, which would at least have gotten them closer (early 20th century.)  Unfortunately, the Cincinnati Reds began life as the Red Stockings in 1876.

You can have positive religious themes as long as you also allow negative ones, which we do with Devils, etc.  And yes, it is only the Christian religion in this country because there aren't enough of anyone else and they don't go that much for sports anyway.

And any financially-literate parent could easily turn credit cards into a positive subject for their child's development and education.

I would suggest also that as ridiculous a name as "Yankees" is, there is always room for those who WIN a war.  The reason there are no team names associated with the Confederacy is because they lost, and nobody of any stature willingly associates with the Old South.  Hell, they're backwards even today!

I will grant you "Brewers" though.  Beer is just...revolting.  It's so...proletarian.

People don't name their teams "the dunderheads" or the "losers". They name their teams with something that represents Pride and strength. So, yeah. Go make a federal case out of NONSENSE.

But, fine if you want to eliminate any references to Native Americans anywhere, then go right ahead. Washington should realize it would be a great capitalistic opportunity for them to change their name. They could get a new name and new logo and sell a bazillion dollars worth of new merchandise. I don't know why they don't change it actually.

Then why use a derogatory term?

To some Indians it is extremely offensive and historically it has not had a positive connotation at all.

Cute...but not exactly fear-inspiring when going head to head with a Bear. 

But?  If we wussify football with all this PC stuff, Chicago would probably get a new mascot also.  Maybe a piece of pizza.  Or would that offend Italians?
