Many parts of Europe leave things out on the counter. When you go to the grocery stores, eggs are not in coolers. It is because the eggs are fresh here. The protective coating is not washed off them like it is in the states. We have been eating the eggs for almost 3 years and never once got sick. We store butter out on the counter, and always have. It isn't something we picked up from living in Europe, it was something that our grandparents did, our parents did...etc. Maybe some people find that gross. I do not. We do not store any meats on the counter. I used to leave my butter out on the counter, in a complicated antique butter dish. I kept thinking I forgot to fill it up when I'd find it empty, until I realized Sushi the Terrible Tonk had figured out how to open it and would eat all the butter every night.

That's funny, we had the same problem with our butter, the cat figured out how to get the cover off the butter dish, we'd wake up every morning and find the cover off it or the dish on the floor. We had to go buy a very heavy one that the cat couldn't volley around.

Not only did the cat figure it out, but he also leaerned how to close it after licking up all the butter.

I'm not sure if I'm more grossed out about the cat licking the butter dish for a while with nobody knowing or the fact that the cat is walking on the kitchen counter.

My cat knows he's not allowed on the counter. That's why he only does it when there are no witnesses. What do you suggest I do? Get rid of the cat or get rid of the counter?

No idea. He's a sneaky booger. Plus, if I make any suggestions, Spellbound will think I'm passing judgments on all cats. Or maybe all Canadians. Not sure how that logic works.
Good luck with him, though. I like his name and the fact that he appears to be a worthy adversary.

His name wasn't Sushi when I got him. It was......
Michael Jackson.

OK, now that's funny. And a little creepy... all rolled into one. Talk about someone you wouldn't want licking your butter in the middle of the night.
You should probably just have a little heart to heart talk to him about how he should be grateful to live with someone who rescued him from that horrible name. And being grateful, he should be willing to stay off the counters and out of the butter. Being totally reasonable - like cats are - I'm sure he'll understand and accede to your wishes.

I did have a heart to heart talk with him. He told me "You do know I'm a cat, right?"
(Michael Jackson is a dreadful name for an Oriental cat.)

OMG, he's cute!!! Um, I'm a softie. I'd totally let him eat the butter.

Welts, that is hilarious! I want a cat so bad, but I am ridiculously allergic to them. I break out in hives if I touch them and if I am around them too long, I feel like I am going to have an asthma attack. I don't have asthma. Sigh, no kitties for me.

What a cutie pie! My Katt von Cat and Henry Chinaski get away with murder because they're good-looking cats.
