Interesting article on Yahoo.com today. Maybe food for thought. With 6.9% unemplyment maybe we should take a look at policies there?

I don't even have to look. The main attraction there is the message to third world immigrants that you will either fully assimilate or get the hell out.

The lack of integration in Germany poses an added layer of issues since the majority of immigrants hails from the Middle East. This isn't just about people learning German but i.e. mandatory attendance of school and participation in ALL subjects for Muslim girls, if you work for the government, no, you cannot wear a burqa or a complete face veil, no, young men cannot knife female German students or teachers because "they are sluts sitting in the same classroom with boys and thus defile them", husbands barring their wives from working but not working themselves and instead drawing welfare. What really in the end riled the German population was when Turkey told Germans they were racist because they did not set up free Islamic schools for immigrant children and make Turkish a required subject subject in school. I was born and grew up in Berlin and being spat at in certain sections of town because I was by myself as a female really put a damper on my enthusiasm for immigrants of certain cultures (and I am an immigrant myself, while there a number of things I don't agree with, hey, it is YOUR country and you get to do as you please). It has nothing to do with isolating oneself from the rest of the world.

We were in Berlin in Sept 2010. A lot of discussion on this issue. Sections of the city have immigrants into their 3rd generation who do not speak German. By not assimulating they have difficulty getting jobs and earning a living. (Germany allowed around 3,000,000 "guest workers" from mostly Turkey tocome to Germany after WWII due to huge manpower shortages caused by the war. Many of these folks never left and also never became German

Back to the thread, interesting that a country with very strong unions and high wages continues to be a force in manufacturing. the massive outsourcing of jobs to places of cheap labor did not happen here. Even though some of these manufactured goods are higher priced than their competitors, they continue to have strong sales. Again with a 6.9% unemployed rate...maybe there is something we should look at here.h

That is because they have superior engineering and production processes that result in top quality products. Chinese made junk cannot even compare. American products were good but maybe not good enough for cost it took to produce them.

Right, and they can afford them because of all the dough they get from idiot Americans who buy all their cheap, made for America, garbage.

A little aside here..2013 Porsche will intoduce a new 500 hp hybrid (500hp gas motor with 3 electric motors) touted to get 78 mpg. AND do 0 to 60 at the speed of light..ha ha. Seriously,I have a cousin who works for Porsche in Stuttgartt..says the base priceline on this will be $155,000 and up. (and they said the muscle car was dead)

If I recall correctly, Germany was one of the countries that didn't throw money at their financial crisis. Think maybe that had something to do with it?

they have long memories...printing money to solve a financial crisis after WWI. There seems to be a little different relationship between companie and employees there. Yes they could save money shipping jobs overseas..but so many wont and dont....

Yes, they threw money at many countries' problems. The difference is they have great tech education at the secondary level and very cheap college education. Thank you Pubs, for nothing...Pfffft!

Actually, it's because they pay well for menial jobs, while here the minimum wage is half the minimum wage of 1968, and you can't earn a living or get health care- Thank you greedy pubs and silly dupes ;D
