But, if people want to paint this as a disability, then don't be surprised that more and more employers decide to stay away. It is something that one cannot hide so they will simply not hire but of course aren't usually dumb enough to say why. It IS a disability. And employers have been not-hiring people over physical attributes since forever.
There are situations it comes into play though. I would think the party of personal responsibility would applaud someone wanting to be productive and work a job rather than sit at home and collect a check. I guess the judgmental angle is too much to resist- so no job for you tubby

Well, if you think people aren't judging you on your looks, then you live under a rock. So yeah, if you want the job, you need to do everything you can to look the part.

Depends though. When I worked for the state the only people that got interviews were the top scorers on the test- so if the top folks were not pretty........Have you dealt with any state employees? And some of them come to work on a hoveround- when I worked there I saw accomodations- we had one guy that had a special computer screen because he was going blind, we had cublicles where wheelchairs would fit in, etc. And these folks worked for SSA disability- they didn't have a lot of sympathy for a 22 year old with back pain and depression.

After the metabolism slowed down, who chose for you to keep eating the same foods in the exact same amounts? I'm guessing it wasn't forced on you. How was I supposed to know it was slowing down? Was there some blinking light that was supposed to come on in neon lights that said "metabolism slowing down"?? Cause if it is, then mine is obviously broken because I only found out after I had gained the weight. Everybody knows that one's metabolism slows down as we age, unless you're an illiterate living in a cave somewhere.

...and not always true. My BIL (who's 48) and my brother (who's 53) still eat like teenaged boys.

It's common knowledge!
I have another shocker for you. For most of us, our hair will turn grey as we age.

Obviously not in this case.
Here's a shocker for you - not everyone who lacks your "obvious" encyclopedic knowledge of everything is illiterate living in a cave.

You (general, this really applies to everyone) find out when your pants all of a sudden start getting tight for no reason you can think of. Instead of getting a larger size, you see the Doctor, substitute a salad for a "regular meal", or something... but you make a choice to make a change... or you accept your choice to get fatter.

I hate the fact that men can still eat like teenagers and not gain weight. So do I and I am a man- just doesn't work for me. I can't even eat donuts and not pay for it- not to mention beer. And worse- according to BMI- I am an overweight pig- nevermind the fact I could easily run down and tackle any skinny ass smoker at work half my age

*cringe* At risk of being beaten with sticks, I wish my darned metabolism would get the message! I have to fight for every pound! My doctor teases me, telling me I burn calories just breathing!

So.... I'll trade you. One "slower than crap" metabolism (mine) for one "faster than Santa" metabolism (yours)

You think people have to look "the part" to get the job? I've worked with people of all sizes in various careers - from accounting to engineering to banking. Both male & female.
Tell me what it takes to "look the part" in order to get the job. Places I've worked, it's taken skills & experience, not looks.

This is a seriously stupid discussion. No one chooses to be obese. Unless we are talking about someone who is gaining weight just to get disability which would take a really long time and I don't think happens very often at all. I know, I know -> that would be Homer Simpson. I saw it with my own eyes on TV! And for those of us focussing on those sins: since greed seems to have become a virtue, why not gluttony?

A rather lame response to my post - or rather, a non-response.
What do you describe as "looking the part" for being hired?
Any place I've been employed has been based on my curriculum vitae (résumé), not on appearance. Same for fellow-employees.
People are for the most part, hired for how well they can do the job, not their appearance.
I've worked with both svelte & fit men & women as well as those who had a "few extra pounds". Some bordering on obese.
It didn't deter them from their job - and they were very qualified workers. .

It helped me. I'm not overweight but my knees hurt when I exercise. So I take it.

But yes , professional appearance is part of looking the part. And if you cant make that effort to present yourself well then dont expect to be hired . There are plenty of quaulified people vying for jobs. So I suggest you google "interviewing " to understand this concept.
