Well, I can start another one and we can see which mod wins the "merge threads" test... But please don't stop giving me advice on flat irons. I have stick straight fine hair. With the exception of perms, curls put into my hair are gone in 60 minutes. I was going to ask if you wanted me to move it again. Maybe current events or the investing basics and beyond? They could use some laughs. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/grin.png)
EE is good enough. lol

I would take Zib's suggestion one step further. Believe it or not flat irons vary widely and how well it suites an individual will depend on their hair type,
If there is any chance you can take your niece to a salon and have them make a recommendation I would do so. I struggled for years with my hair before a co-worker hesitantly suggested a flat iron as if she were insulting me. I've taken DD to an ethnic salon and the type she needs is very different than the type I need.
FWIW I have a Chi which is awesome. DD refuses to flat iron her hair so I don't remember what they said for her. I've been told chi is kinda the gold standard in flat irons.

Who does your nieces hair now? That's who I'd talk to.

A flat Iron? Who let all the air out? How, may I ask, do you re-inflate one? Or, when you mention "hot" are you referring to the ones that yours truly uses to burn holes in white shirts when the phone rings? Hey wait, those have steam in them! So maybe the correct question is...."who let the steam out?" to the tune of ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/note.gif) who let the dogs out?" ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/note.gif)

My hairdresser recommended a brand (don't remember which) that ran around $160. I was not about to pay that!
My sister had a Chi, around $100 and it died on her just after the warranty expired. She replaced it with a cheaper one and said it was just as good. So when I went and bought one earlier this year, I also bought the same brand. It was Remington, around $30.

I say Chi is the way to go. I had a few cheap ones, but the hair didn't stay straight. With my Chi, it can be straight for two days if I don't wash it. Worth every penny.

I buy my flat irons at Sally's Beauty Supply. I get the hottest one I can find-usually one that heats up to 450*. I am Caucasian, but I have thick, coarse, frizzy, dry, crappy hair. The 2 brands I like the best are Jilbere and Tool Science. I have never found one at Target or Walmart or the like that gets hot enough to tame my hair and keep it straight. I lived in central Florida for years and using those (along with some good hair products) my hair stayed straight even on the most humid of days. Fair warning, though, I will spend a $100 if necessary for a good flat iron. Usually I can get them for under $50, but my hair is important! ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/grin.png) After spending $100+ on several different flat irons, my friend introduced the jilbere to me and it changed my life. It's been going strong for 10 years now. It used to take me an hour to straighten my long, thick, curly hair, and this thing gets it silky straight in less than 10 minutes. I can go a whole week without washing it or straightening it again. My hair is not black, but it is so kinky, I used to get the black "burn your scalp" perm treatments on it. www.amazon.com/Jilbere-Tourmaline-Flat-Iron-1-1/dp/B003C1V5IU/ref=pd_sim_sbs_bt_7?ie=UTF8&refRID=17VSJHSHA6YA199A03JPI have the 2" size.

I've got just the opposite problem. My hair used to have a lot of natural curl. I could just blow dry and scrunch with my fingers to bring the curl out as it was drying, or run a quick curling iron through it. But I've lost most of my natural curl.
Now I need to use curling wands of various sizes to get the same effect. (My hair is well past my shoulders, and I want my curls back). I've been looking at the Conair Infiniti Pro Curl Secret curling tool, but it's close to $100 freaking dollars! I suppose in the long run, it might be a good purchase - since I wouldn't have to get may hair treated with the harsh chemicals of a spiral perm every few months at approx the same price for each treatment.
The advantage of the Conair Infiniti, is you can control the heat setting to create just how loose or tight you want the curls to be. And it can be used on almost any length of hair (except really short, of course).

973, just to bust, fry up a flat iron steak right before gift time and wrap it for her! Pretend you misunderstood, then give her the real one.

This is the niece with "issues" and she wasn't able to come home for Christmas. BIL and his wife took the gifts up on Monday. I was told she loved the flat iron. Oddly, on Christmas Day, BIL and his wife asked what the presents were - they were sorting for contraband, more or less. So I said "it's a curling iron, no wait, a flat iron." "You got her a flat iron??!" "Yeah, she asked me for one." Apparently they had no clue she wanted one. ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/idunno.gif)

I have it, SL, and I love it. My hair is straight as a ruler and this is the best curling wand I've ever used. My hair is too fine to have perms often enough to stay nice without ruining my hair. This wand has been the answer to my prayers and the curls do last. To me, it's been worth the cost. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/smiley.png)

Thanks for mentioning how well they work.
I'll have to check out prices at different locations (once the weather improves here). We do finally have a BB & B in the new mall not too far away.
Like you, mmhmm - my hair is super-fine. And getting older seems to have also made me lose any curl it once had. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/tongue.png)
