WASHINGTON — Choosing to carry your luggage onto a plane instead of checking it with an airline might save you a few bucks at the ticket counter but it's costing taxpayers about a quarter-billion dollars a year. How is it costing more? Every person who flies has to be screened by the TSA. It's not like the TSA gets paid per bag they check. She didn't say they have to hire more agents to check the bags.

It's not costing more. For decades mainly flight attendants have wanted to do away with carry-on bags. This is goverment-airline-union conspiring against customers to give flight attendants a gift they've sought for years.

I'm a little confused. Aren't checked bags screened too? Why would a carry-on cost so much more to screen than a checked bag?

It's not costing more. For decades mainly flight attendants have wanted to do away with carry-on bags. This is goverment-airline-union conspiring against customers to give flight attendants a gift they've sought for years. All it would take is a reverse on their policy. Charge for carry-ons and let your checked bags fly free. |

Since I usually go to NE for a three week/four week stay with family and summer is time I go, last time , took up a old set , still OK set and left them at my Daughters...take that air Lines up yours. ;D

At the moment airlines sell their excess space in the belly of the plane and ship it as air cargo for a big profit. They can't sell the space under someone's seat that way. That is why they started charging passangers for checked luggage. It makes up for the money they lose when someone's luggage takes up that space that they now can't sell. Cargo shipped this way doens't get screened, I don't know how much checked baggage does either. |

The airport I usually fly out of has you leave your checked luggage with the TSA guy right at the gate where it gets xrayed and searched right in front of you, then given to the gate agent to be loaded. However, it's a small airport.............

When I fly, it is out of Detroit and carry-on bags go through the xray machine. Toiletries must be in a quart sized plastic bag and placed in one of the bins. The toiletries must not exceed a certain size. I've never had a carry-on searched, but I've seen it happen if folks pack something not allowed in a carry-on, or is in someway suspicious. They don't normally search each bag. It would take days.

I would rather see all baggage checked and carry-on baggage get the baggage surcharge. Quicker to get through security checks points and faster passenger embarking/debarking the aircraft. Lost luggage would still be a problem.
Only thing you could bring on an airplane (besides a jacket or coat) would be a purse, briefcase or laptop computer. Restrictions would have to be adjusted for items needed for small children.
