Believing arts are a necessary part of society isn't elitist.
Thinking disadvantaged kids would probably prefer a tractor pull to the ballet is...

I took that comment to be more about hands-on experience as opposed to a sitting and watching experience. In my city there are lots of hands on experiences related to art- pottery, painting, glass-blowing, cooking, cake decorating, jewelry making to name a few. I just saw one that allows you to bring your own small furniture item to learn how to chalk paint. The cost is a pretty reasonable $25 or so, you get to create it yourself while following along with an instructor and go home with whatever you've made. That said, I think it's great to donate and if ballet is your thing- then even better.

Oh oh, you dislike elitists? Are you a hater? Or just intolerant?

I donate to animal causes because animals have no choice about being brought into this world. Thinking adults can choose to bring a child into this world. They also have the obligation to support them the best they can. That may mean that they provide basics and not luxuries.

I've been to a few, and don't really care for the noise (or any activity that requires me to wear ear plugs for an extended period of time).

Kids have no choice about being brought into this world... You're right but it's a parents obligation to provide, no one else's.

$50 is a bargain price (so the venue probably is making a donation). In our neck of the woods, tickets start at about $40, so $50 is probably the sticker price unless they're putting them in the fancy curtained boxes on the sides or up front. I really prefer the first balcony near the front and that runs about $50. I think you should follow your gut on this one. Do it. I grew up in NYC and loved going to the New York City Ballet at Lincoln Center as a kid. Saw Nutcracker a number of times. It never got old.....loved it every time. I've had opportunity to see it in Toronto at the Hummingbird Centre and in Rochester at the Eastman Theatre. We took our kids and my niece who probably wouldn't have had that opportunity as a child. Have also been fortunate to see the Royal Danish Ballet in Copenhagen.

I saw the Nutcracker for the first time when I was 25. I loved it! I took my mom for Christmas one year and she didn't care for it all that much. She TRIED to like it because it was her Christmas gift but my mom wasn't very good at hiding her true feelings about things - lol.
I am glad you donated enough for 4 kids. It sounds like a great thing for Big Brothers/Big Sisters to do. Exposing kids to different things is important IMHO. I don't think there is anything wrong with using your resources to "gift" something special. My guess is most all of these kids have their basic needs met already and this sounds like a wonderful gift to me. My guess is 1/2 of them will enjoy it and at least the other 1/2 can say they went.
