Darn it all. I was afraid of that when watching earlier today. Didn't open the cam only the chat and saw he was gone. I can't even watch now until I know what happens to his little body.

Harriet has moved the eaglet to the other side of the nest. She has been pecking at the body and wing. I do not know whether she is trying to get a response. The mods tell us it might be a rough day to watch, as E5 could be fed to E6 today. It is not a guarantee that will happen here, but there are nests that have been observed where this did happen E6 did cozy up to E5 last night to go to sleep.

I just turned off the live feed from the nest. I am concerned about E6 It's breathing rather heavily, Ozzie has been standing overit, and no food has been brought to the nest today. The conversation has been closed for several hours now, and this is not a normal thing for them to do in the morning. They might have just paused the chat because many schools do a live feed for children in class, and may not want to upset the children. I am hoping all is well.

Such good eagle parents and what a struggle to get new healthy eagles. I wonder what happened.

E6 got a bit of a meal around 1PM today. I'm sure many people found it hard to watch.
That might be why s/he is so uninterested in the fish that Harriet is currently pulling apart.

I have been watching this nest since mid November. I know they are just "birds" and not human, but nature is amazing in it's intricate details of life. Watching the interaction of the adults and going about their daily life, they are not really different than humans, in figuring out a routine, and going about their daily chores and responsibilities. It is hard not to" humanize" them and feel their pain.
Shit. I felt that way about Bambi and ole Yeller when I was a child. Who am I kidding?
It's all Walt Disney's fault.

Tonight was interesting. Ozzie was eating a mammal tonight and was not sharing with E6. It was probably a squirrel. Harriet landed and fed E6 one of the fish stored on the nest from earlier trips. After the fish was done, Harriet left the nest, probably on a branch above. Ozzie was having trouble with the pelt. That was about all that was left, so He decided to eat it. He got it about 3/4's down, and could not get the rest down, so tried to expunge it but could not. He was in the nest, with it stuck in his throat. Harriet landed on the opposite side of the nest, looked at Ozzie, walked across the nest. Ozzie had his head down towards the nest, struggling to get it out. Harriet reached towards his beak, grabbed the pelt with her beak, and tugged it out of his throat. It was amazing, as she had to tug several times to get it out. She walked to the other side of the nest, dropped the pelt in the nest and looked at Ozzie, as he was hacking away from the pelt fiasco. This happened about 6:44 pm tonight. They will have a video available, probably tomorrow to watch. E6 took his it's first real steps in the nest earlier today. The eaglet is really getting large, and pin feathers are starting to come in.

We were really laughing over this last night. Do not know if Ozzie was in distress or not, but he ure kept shaking his head and beak after it was pulled out. Harriet was probably thinking, "you idiot! but your my idiot!"
I also like the communication between them when one arrives in the tree, before coming down in the nest.

If anyone has not checked in lately, E 6 is really growing fast. Starting to walk in the nest and will probably start nibbling bites on it's own next week. The feathers are starting to come in, but the eaglet looks like a bad case of scurvy right now. The parents have been expanding the size of the rails around the nest to keep the baby from accidently going over the edge of the nest.

Anyone that has failed to follow the Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, may want to check in soon. This year's adventure is coming to a close. E 6 has a wing span of almost 6 feet, is about 24 inches tall, and is exercising it's wings, getting ready to start branchersizing, in anticipation of soon flying out of the nest for the first time. E 6 should take first flight in about a week or so. Not quite as much fun as when he was smaller, and some of the food is now delivered still alive (barely) to the nest for the young one.

Ahhh! I forgot to keep up once I started my new job! He's so big! It is amazing since E6 hatched in late December I accidently called it "he" in my last post. We do not know what sex it is, and certainly does not resemble an Eagle other than it's large beak and talons. Strange seeing it as an all black youngster, but is certainly large. These birds do eat a large amount of food everyday to keep the energy up.

I can't believe how big he is getting. I love their silly songsong voices. I hear them here also and it seems like such a playful, light sound sometimes coming from such a big majestic bird.

E6 took his "first branch" just now! This is the first step in officially leaving the nest for the first time. short of the "first flight" so to speak. Was flexing it's wing's, hopped across the nest and jumped onto the lowest branch above and outside of the nest. It did not fly ,only hopped, but officially it's branching!

Tomorrow we are visiting the nest. It will be exciting. We hope to see E6 on the edge of the nest, or on the first branch a couple of inches above the nest!

VV-if you are ever in the neighborhood of extreme southwest Kentucky and northwest Tennessee, visit Reelfoot Lake State Park in Tennessee. During the winter time, there are hundreds (if not thousands according to the park's website) of bald eagles. I visited there maybe 12-13 years ago and did see hundreds flying around and sitting on nests in trees. Reelfoot Lake is interesting by itself. It was created as a result of the 1811-1812 Madrid fault earthquakes. The earthquakes caused the Mississippi River to flow backwards for a bit and the lake was created. Reelfoot Lake State Park

Thanks Tennesseer, Reelfoot Lake is a nice place to be, was down there years ago, but just traveling through.
Our visit to this nest was great. The pasture and their nest is amazingly close to the four lane Bayshore road. The Eagles have to be cognizant of the traffic noise and very comfortable with it. In the morning the best view is from the church parking lot to the east, with the sun behind you. You can watch the eaglet standing in the nest, since it is now almost the size of it's parents. In the afternoon you have the sun in your face from there. What the cameras do not show you, is there is a drive way to the real estate agency on the west side of the property, that is closer to several pine trees than the nest, than from the parking lot. There are two pine trees about 40 to 50 feet from the long driveway, across from the nest tree. where you are able to park your car, and walk along the fence to them. The adults sometimes are in one of these trees about 40 feet up in the tree, just perched there, but their back is always towards you, and they observe the nest. When they glide out of the tree, it is an amazing sight, as you are so close to it. There is no doubt why the American Eagle was named our National bird. I do have to say, the cameras are the best view we could possibly have, but to see the nest in person with the birds there, is a must see. I have seen Eagles in captivity, but to see their gracefulness in the open, is a sight to behold. Of course I cannot say "in the wild" for here, but darn, it is amazing. We will visit the nest a few more times while down here.

Well, we have a problem on the nest. Ozzie was last seen yesterday at around 2pm and has not been back to the nest. There was an Eagle found dazed on railroad tracks in FT Myers late in the afternoon yesterday, and taken to C.R.O.W. a wildlife rehab center, but Ozzie is not banded, so we are not sure if it is him. Right now Harriet has been the only one near the nest since 2pm yesterday.
I have to give this stuff up. Too much drama to handle........

Oh my. I hope she can manage on her own.
I just checked the camera and the nest looks empty. I could see the tail feathers of one.

Oh my. I hope she can manage on her own. I guess Ozzie has been away other times for a day, or at least that is what the mods are saying. I saw the evening news last night showing the Eagle on the tracks, looking dazed. They did not show the capture, but stated a train came through right after removing the Eagle They are wild creatures, so anything can happen. Harriet sh/be able to care for E6 as it is now 81 days old and should take it's first flight any day now. She should also be able to supply all the food needed, since their is only one baby. If Ozzie does not return, it sort of depends when she realizes something happened and she has to take care of everything.

Update
It was Ozzie who was hurt. The rehab center says about six to eight weeks of treatment WINK television did an outstanding report showing Ozzie being treated, and think he will make a complete recovery and able to be released. Broken clavicle Harriet was away from the nest this morning. Do not know if she is hunting for food or for Ozzie. E6 has not eaten since Tuesday afternoon. Moderators say E6 sh/be ok for a couple of days at this age without food. Looks like Ozzie will miss E6's graduation from the nest. Hopefully, Harriet sticks around to connect with Ozzie. Moderators said these Eagles stay here year round.
E6 has been active in various branches in the tree.

I'm so glad Oz is in good hands . Really worried about the little guy though. He needs some good meals for strength if he's going to fly soon and he's not getting them . Makes me really appreciate the eagles I see around here knowing what a struggle they have.

He looks so big with her holding him. The last report I heard was he is perching & eating on his own. Mom is on it now & baby is getting fed. I hope VB hasn't given up watching. It is hard at times. Is it weird I feel a little guilty knowing where Ozzie is and that he's ok when Harriet doesn't? It doesn't seem fair somehow.

Yep. Still down here. In fact we stopped at the nest this afternoon. Harriet was in a branch about four feet above the nest, and E6 was wingersizing in the nest when we were there. He rises about 3 or 4 feet above the nest, and sort of hovers. So great to see it in person! People have telephoto lenses on their cameras with tripods to take great close up pictures. A gentleman told us Harriet had brought food twice today. A squirrel, and probably a fish. If you go to the website, you can find all kinds of videos (thanks Tennesseer) and right now there is also a picture album of E6 showing his various experiences inside and outside the nest. We are expecting the first flight in the next day or two. Ozzie and Harriet are rather famous characters here, and well followed. The realestate company has horse pastures along the nest, and have Eagle statues on the gates to the premises, representing Ozzie and Harriet.
