If you have worked on the newer autos that have more electronics or know technicians that have, then you would realize that it will eventually cost you just as much if not more for an electric car. Electronic repair on an automobile is the hardest and most expensive labor(the time factor), on top of that most auto shops you go to will think they have fixed the problem one place and it actually originated in another. There is nothing particularly hard about diagnosing electronics- and it is much easier work than regular line repairs. More likely the reason for misdiagnosis/repeat repairs is the fact that a lot of shops will hire anyone with a toolbox and a pulse as long as they can bill the hours- trust me there is not a lot of incentive to spend a lot of time on proper repairs.

Well- I'm going electric next vehicle for starters. Besides, alternatives are in only their infancy here-so much tech coming in the near future. Go ahead and stick with gas and pay out the nose if you want- might as well stock up on incandescent bulbs too while you still can. I have a friend that just built his own.. that's another way to go

I know the oil companies are raping us at the pumps though. I don't really blame the gas stations. If you look at the whole process of where the fuel comes from and goes, you would see that gas stations usually fill their tanks twice a week(atleast they did 15 years ago when I worked at one, it could be more often now). I am pretty sure they adjust their prices based on what brokers at remote offices tell them to. When I was working at the gas station we profitted from 6-8 cents on one gallon and I am not sure if that depended on competing with other gas stations too.

I don't think the modern conservatives have much in common with Nixon era Rrepublicans. They sure as heck wouldn't back the EPA or any government regulations for that matter. Except for that one guy who just got voted out... He's a huge proponent of conservation.

I am curious how long have you been a mechanic?

20+ years-worked dealerships/indys/for myself on just about everything- currently specializing in light duty diesels. Might surprise people that some of us grease monkeys rake in 100K+ It beats the heck out of money I was making in other fields so the degrees can just sit on the wall from here out- can't outsource me either .
