I don't know if folks have seen this on FB, but I know someone here mentioned not donating to Goodwill because the CEO gets all the money. Anyway, here is the false story going around
And here is the snopes report
There are a lot of misinformation things like this that get passed around trying to discredit organizations that do some really good work. It's worth double checking the info when you see these things.

It was great to read Forbes ratings for the efficiency ratings. I didn't realise they do that.

Salvation Army used to be bad but after being "outed" I've heard they cleaned up their act. I still won't donate to them though.

Goodwill DOES provide job training, etc. for people who need help. But, it IS difficult to feel sorry for anyone making $725,000 per year. (I'd snap up a gig like that in a New York minute!)

(I'd snap up a gig like that in a New York minute!) well you know if those jobs are so easy to do, why don't you apply for it? and I don't think $725K a year is all that much. I work with people who have a household income over $400K and it doesn't really go that far in a HCOLA. certainly not enough to have houses all over the world or a private jet or other things associated with uber-rich.

For the size of the organization $750,000 is not outrageous. It is definitely lower than comparable private sector compensation. But I'm not here to debate that. Just to make sure people make their decisions based on factual information.

Sum Dum Gai Goodwill has a board of directors that hired this guy. It isn't his company in any way shape or form.

Duh, but typing his is easier than coming up with the correct gender neutral prepositions to describe a sexless entity that's actually made up of multiple people which he runs. I realize he didn't start the non-profit, he doesn't own it, etc. Well it makes a differance. People really think it his. Actually the business model is not profitable. The main service is providing jobs to disable people that aren't really employable. There are a lot of supervisors etc employed to train and supervise the clientele. And that is what the CEO is paid to oversee and his job performance evaluations are based on.

The board of directors pay what they need to pay to get people with the skills they need to provide the services they provide. And when contracts are done the staff are done being paid. They aren't getting stock options or pensions and golden handshakes. Most of the staff would make much more selling their skills in the private sector.
I'm going to stop now. The facts are there people can make their decisions based on them.

About the wages that Goodwill pays out.....
"For Sheila Leigland, a blind Goodwill employee in Great Falls, Montana, earning $3.99 an hour was already tough. But when the Rockville, Md.-based nonprofit wanted to cut her salary to $2.75, she decided it was time to quit. “I want to be paid a living wage for meaningful work,” she says. Blind since birth, Leigland, 58, survives on disability payments. “It’s not just me—all Goodwill employees deserve the same. They call themselves leaders in providing opportunity for the disabled, but since when did opportunity look like a quarter an hour?”
Leigland’s husband Harold, 66, a former massage therapist, also works at Goodwill, earning $5.40 an hour. No, that isn’t anywhere near the minimum wage.
The plight of the Leiglands and of other low-paid Goodwill workers has gotten some attention lately, which has resulted in a petition on Change.org that has pulled in 150,000 since late June. The petition calls on Goodwill to pay all its workers at least the minimum wage. “If you can afford multimillion dollar executive compensation packages,” says the petition, “You can afford to do right by your workers.”
On June 21, NBC News ran a television piece on “Rock Center with Brian Williams.” Salon and the Huffington Post also reported on the issue and several organizations including the National Federation of the Blind and a group called the Autistics Self Advocacy Network have called for changes at Goodwill. According to Labor Department documents dug up by NBC, Goodwill has paid workers in Pennsylvania as little as 22 cents, 38 cents and 41 cents an hour. (Goodwill says those ultra-low-wage figures are distorted because sometimes workers run into emotional or physical issues, don’t finish their shifts, and then wait for a parent or caregiver to arrive; in those cases Goodwill must still count the total amount of time the worker stays on the job, which translates to an abnormally low hourly wage.)
I won't donate to Goodwill after seeing how many of them are run when a friend of mine was managing the local "store" in my area. She was under CONSTANT pressure to get more sales, get better donations, get more sales, do all this with fewer employees! And she didn't have any handicapped employees in her store."

I choose to donate to our local abused women's/children's home! They need EVERYTHING since most times all they leave the abuser with is the clothes on their backs! Toys, books, educational materials for the kids, items to set up a new home with (linens, kitchen utensils, etc.)....anything and everything!
